So what's the deal? Is this the original Pumpkins or Pumpkins lite? Because I wanna get excited about this, but only if it's the original members.

Meh - I like Smashing Pumpkins, but IMO Siamese Dream was their most solid album - and their Melancholie and the infinite sadness album was only half good. I won't at all be excited about a new Pumpkins cd until I hear something from it first.

They are headlining the Rock am Ring Festival here in Germany which would be awsome news if it was any other Festival but the problem is that they got the tendency to put bands in that position that don't show up anyway like Guns 'n' Roses or Slipknot who both cancelled in the past years. I'm half and half on the reunion, maybe the record wins me over. Here's a bet that it isn't going to sound like anything pre-Machina...

I'm quite looking forward to this one... I've liked the Pupkins off and on since 1995 when they came out with Melancholy (or was that 96?)...

Either way, I like all of their studio albums except for Piesces Escariot... Just couldn't get into their B-sides... Adore is probably my favourite album of theirs, because it was so dark and experimental... I actually think that Siamese Dream while a good album, is a bit over-rated.... :p

Anyway, I heard from my bro that he was listening to Jimmy Chamberlain on a local radio station here, and he told the DJ that this new Zeitgeist album is "very spiritual and it will cleanse you" or some such nonsense along those lines... I don't know what the fuck that shit means, but I hope it at least rock a little!

It's not even really the Pumpkins. Chamberlin's played on everything Corgan's relased since the Pumpkins broke up anyway, so this is hardly a reunion. The only way I could see it being any good is if they go back to the original Pumpkins sound (part of me is hoping that that's why Corgan decided to release this as "Smashing Pumpkins").

Corgan's an odd case though. Yeah, he was the Pumpkins. But the thing is, everything he's done since the Pumpkins broke up has kinda sucked, and I would argue that even the Pumpkins didn't do a truly great album after Mellon Collie. I'm still not sure why this is. Only thing I can think of is that maybe he's only good at doing that grungy style of music that was the Pumpkins' early sound. If he goes back to that, it could be good.

I remember liking it okay, though I haven't listened to it in YEARS.

And from what I've heard, this CD might actually not be that bad. Apparently some of it hearkens back to the Siamese Dream days a bit.

Not too sure what to think of the album cover. Since they had some amazing album covers and booklets in the past (Mellon Collie & Adore being my favorites) this is excuseable though.

I've been recently listening to the Pumpkin's version of Blondie's "Dreaming" alot. Great song.

And I'd still defend Corgan's solo album, I liked it better than Zwan and yesh, even Machina. If only it wasn't for that horrible drum-computer sound on it, this would be close to "Adore" in my book.

Tarantula is cool so far, I got the feeling that it could be growing on me. Is it me or has Billy found a liking in rip-roaring metal riffs since Machina? The guitar sound reminds me alot of Kyuss somehow...

For my money, Smashing Pumpkins has always been a Bill Corgan solo project, so original members being present only makes a slight difference. However, I could see there being something to him going for a different sound using different names. That's a possibility. Tarantula is...eh. Maybe it'll grow on me. I like the album cover, but I agree that it's not very Pumpkins-esque. With all the different projects he's tried in recent years, I'm not yet convinced that going back to the name isn't all about the money, but we'll see when the album comes out. If it's good enough, it can be all about the money and I won't care.

I can't believe how fucking good "Tarantula" is. It has a Queen/Boston feel to it, what with the layered guitar harmonies and the distinct arrangement. But I don't care what anyone says; this is NOT Smashing Pumpkins.

Tarantula is fucking awesome! By the by, the new members to the Pumpkins are Jeff Schroeder (guitar) and Ginger Reyes (bass). Schroeder was formerly apart of The Lassie Foundation, and Reyes of The Halo Frendlies.

Oh yeah, and folks were going nuts when the Pumpkins hit the stage in Paris a couple of days ago. They're baaaa-aaaaack!

I`m lovin` it (and yes countchocula that IS a McDonalds reference).

The cover art isn`t that great, but it`s not the cover art I was worried about.

I said earlier that I wouldn`t get TOO excited till I heard something from it......well, now that I`ve heard "Tarantula", consider me excited.

And for the record I really liked Zwan AND the solo album. Zwan more.

I just finished watching the Pumpkins gig at Rock am Ring on TV and I think I'll be kicking myself in the ass for not ending up going throughout the next four years or so because it was a class gig. The setlist was way cool and I liked the new songs as well, think I'm going to love "Zeitgeist".

On the subject matter of it really being Smashing Pumpkins since it's only Corgan and Chamberlain returning, I'm kind of on the fence but on the other hand I don't really care - the new songs sound kick ass and after all this is what matters. I mean, "Adore" was minus Chamberlain and it was most definitely a Smashing Pumpkins record too. D'arcy and Iha are sadly missed to be sure though, even if their presence was not always substancial for the Pumpkin sound (I DO love "Said Sadly" & "Farewell & Goodnight" and of course "Daydream"). Just think that Corgan basically was recording "Siamese Dream" solo.

Anyhow, it's great to see one of my favorite bands of all time back in gear. I'm going to pick up the new album for sure.

Look at it this way: The Cure went through so many lineup changes over the years that it`s not even funny. But whenever I hear a Cure song, it always sounds like The Cure to me. That`s because Robert Smith was always the driving creative force, and I feel the same way about the Pumpkins and Corgan.

So, this leaked finally.

Not totally shitty like I kind of expected it to be. Some pretty darn good stuff on it. Hell, not a bad record on the whole. I probably like it better than the Machinas when it comes down to it.

Verdict as of now: Better than I'd expected. I'm content. :)

TheAxeGrinder

The album will actually be released on the 10th, which is way too long for me to wait for it. Tarantula just plain rocks, and Doomsday Clock kicks so much ass. For those people who complained about the album once it was leaked onto the net about the levels being all screwed up with the sound and blah blah blah, all I can say is STFU, the Pumpkins are back and kicking ass! YOU KNOW I'M NOT DEAD!

Elgyn

I got it early yesterday (it`s nice to have friends who work for record stores, hehehe) but I`ve only had a chance to really listen to it all the way through once - clearly not enough time to really let the album 'sink in'.

I will say this though: anyone who complained that "Adore" and "Machina" didn`t 'rock enough' can now politely shut their mouths because this is DEFINETLY the heaviest that the Pumpkins have EVER been. Hell, my damn kitchen cabinets were vibrating when I was playing it last night!!!!
[And no, not because I keep vibrators in my kitchen cabinets.]

So far my only real complaint is that there doesn`t seem to be any quieter songs in the mix like "Disarm" or "Thirty-Three". But oh well, Corgan wanted to make a kickass rockin` album and dammit that`s what he did!:D

The only real complaint I have about this album is the fact that there are so many versions out there, and I could only get the one with the 72-page booklet! No DVD, no extra tracks, nothing.

If I wanted to waste money downloading the album on iTunes (I'm a sucker for originals and quality), and in the process get a unique cover and one bonus track I would, but still. Looks as though if I want those extra tracks, I'll have to snag the 'Tarantula' single with 'Death From Above' as the B-side.

Still, SCREW THE MAINSTREAM CRITICS WHO DON'T KNOW JACK!

Lemmywinks

You want the three bonus tracks dude? Go to www.netphoria.com and go to their messageboard. They have a thread where you can download all 3 of the bonus songs. I think all of them are in FLAC too, so great quality. The three bonus songs are actually pretty good too. I really like stellar and zeitgiest is a great acoustic song.

As for the new album, I'm loving it. It might be my favorite pumpkins album since mellon collie. For only two people making these songs, they kick a lot of ass. Props to Billy and Jimmy for their amazing work. Best cd of the year so far for me.

I'm really glad that a) it looks like Billy Corgan finally got some sun and b) they returned to a Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness-type sound. I was never too big on electronica Pumpkins. "United States" definitely has an "XYU" vibe to it.

And "Zeitgeist" should've been included on the normal album. It's the title track for God's sake.

XHendrix24

Adore is SO vastly underrated by everyone. Easily one of the Pumpkins' best albums, and probably my favorite, albeit with stiff competition from Siamese Dream and especially Mellon Collie.

I mean, "For Martha," what the fuck. Seriously. Greatest Pumpkins song ever? There's a pretty damn good chance.

This one's okay, though. Lyrics kind of blow most of the time and the vocals are too high in the mix, but it's not terrible. If they don't release "Bring the Light" as a single, they're idiots. That song's the SHIT.

I just bought this the other day, and it's not too bad.... It's certainly no "Mellon Collie" but it's not their worst effort either... I actually like all of the Pumpkins' albums, with the exception of their b-side collection "Piesces Escariot"...

This one starts of fucking rocking with it's first 3-4 songs or so, and the other ones I liked weren't quite as hard (but still good nontheless)... Billy's voice hasn't aged much if at all, and the guitar on here is great... Jimmy Chamberlain's drumming is still fantastic as ever as well... There were complaints that the other 2 original Pumpkins aren't present on this album (D'Arcy and James Iha) but the Pumpkins have always been Corgan and Chamberlain IMO anyway.... There were only 4 songs that I didn't care for, outta the discs 12, so that's not too bad....

Some of my favourites off the album are Doomsday Clock, 7 Shades of Black, Tarantula, Starz and Neverlost.

If you're into more of the rockin' Pumpkins sound, I recommend this... It's not experimental or conceptual like Adore or Machina were, but I think each Pumpkins album has it's own sound. I like this album, it's pretty fuckin' good!

To those who are on the fence with Zeitgeist, do yourself a favour and get it. It's not Zwan, it's not another of Billy's solo records, it just plain rocks, and rocks hard.

Sure, some of the press have been slamming the Pumpkins for this, but they can't get over the fact that Billy and Jimmy are the only ones returning. Considering that Billy did everything on Siamese Dream, it shouldn't come as a shock that he and Jimmy did everything on this album.

I hope this hits number 1 on the Billboard charts. Sure, it's no Mellon Collie, but hey, it's the fuckin' Smashing Pumpkins, yo!

It seems like people complain every time a Pumpkins record comes out.
"Adore" and "Machina' didn`t rock enough......now "Zeitgeist" isn`t really the Pumpkins. Whatever.
The Cure dropped & added members with almost every album, and I never heard people saying it`s "not really The Cure".

People need to remember that every Pumpkins record has ALWAYS gone in a different direction. No two albums are that similar in tone.
Just as "Adore" was the Pumpkins mellowing out (and people complained about it), "Zeitgeist" is the Pumpkins totally rockin` out (and people are complaining about it).

As for my personal opinion, I think the new one isn`t among their best (it seems rushed and the sound production seems off), it`s still great to have them back.

I got it last week and while I haven't had a chance to listen to it intensely (which is what any Pumpkin album demands) I think I can say that I'm not disappointed at all. The absence of Iha and D'arcy is definitely felt but that is a good thing, it's not a rehash of the old days but something new. And there is some awsome material on it, "Neverlost" makes me cry. The only song I didn't fully gasp at is "Come on lets go" because it sounds too much like "Zero" - something that I don't appreciate in the context of the rest of the album which is, as I said, definitely not a rehash of the days of wayback.

I'm looking forward for this to grow on me more and I'm even more looking forward on seeing them live in August. I don't usually pay attention to public reaction to an album but I laughed hard at some of the negative comments on amazon for "Zeitgeist" and especially the "Tarantula" single. Check them out if you want to know what I mean.
