View Full Version : Cringe-worthy Songs

After seeing the video for Regina Spektor's 'Fidelity' just now on VH1, I find myself in disbelief. I wasn't aware that any combination of musical sounds, no matter how unholy, could be capable of bringing me (literally) to nausea. It was truly the most uncomfortable listening experience I've ever had.

I consider myself very open-minded when it comes to music, and my tastes are extremely wide-ranging. In fact, on some level, I can appreciate this song for being unique. But that doesn't save it from being intensely off-putting. Something about the breathy, oh-so-kooky delivery just gets under my skin like nothing I've heard before.

So now I'm caught up in a kind of morbid curiosity - what songs have had this effect on you? And I'm not talking about merely having been 'sick' of a song due to sappiness or overexposure, a la 'My Heart Will Go On.' I'm talking about the kind of song that you physically cannot endure.

What songs make you cringe and/or nauseous? Is this a common thing for people? Or is this just my own weird shit going on?

I think it's pretty sad that you think that. To my mind it means you've not heard the wealth of great music that has been released in the last decade. Tell me what you like and i'll try to recommend some stuff. I hope this doesn't sound too patronising. That's not what i'm aiming for. I just think it's a bit sad that someone can't find joy in music unless it belongs to a different decade. And there's plently of great stuff around so you're obviously not looking hard enough.

I have heard most of the not to mainstream stuff lately and while some of it is good, most of it seems too monotonous to me. I'm with deadguy (the guy with the Dubya avatar) on this when I say that it got worse when the millenium approached. I'd rather not dig and dig to find something I like. I honestly don't think searching for great new music should be a painful chore.

There are far too many songs for me to list right now. But my more recent inductees into the Cringe-Worthy or Cringe-Inducing Songs Hall of Fame would have to be anything from Fergie's solo CD.

It really annoys me when people say this, since it's completely untrue and all.

Today's mainstream rap is really no worse than today's mainstream rock when it comes down to it. Doesn't mean there aren't plenty of lesser-known bands of both genres that put most of the mainstream acts to shame.

Yeah, this gets me too. I'd say that rap lyrics have surpassed modern rock lyrics. Which rhyme do you think is better?

a.) "Look at this photograph. Everytime I do it makes me laugh."

b.)"I scrutinize every word, memorize every line
I spit it once, refuel, re-energize and rewind."

Yeah... that definitely gets me too. Both of the genres in term of their mainstream music are kind of "blah" to me.

It also gets me when someone says Modern anything is worse really. Because if you're just looking at mainstream... its really not.

Think about it, people were saying the same thing in the 70's with Disco, in the 80's with Hairbands and new wave music and the 90's with Grunge and Alternative. No decade really eclipses the other, you just have to dig deeper this day and age for the good music because of the large number of artists and labels and such there are today. But thats not nearly as hard as it was 20 years ago with the internert and such. So I would say not only do we have it easy.... but this decade is not that bad.

Whatever. Here is every rap song from the past five years:

"What! What!... Uh huh-Yeah! Uh-huh-Yeah!" But on top of a song from ten years ago. I'd say rap is far more shallow than rock. Just a bunch of tough guys posturing and acting all "thug life." But radio alt rock sucks ass too, it just doesn't make my ears bleed.

The worst has to be that Jay Z song that's in every comercial.

"Show me what ya got li'l momma! Show me what ya got per'y lada!"

It's like he forgot to spit out the marbles before he started rapping, not to mention he's mumbling anyway and clashing against the beat.

What about mf doom or kool keith? It's not ok for me to come on here slagging off bands but its ok, to make sweaping statements aboutt hip hop, I happen to think that hip hop is alot nicer tolisten too, even snoop or jay z than fall out boy or green day, but I understand your point about Jay after all he was ment to retire after the black album, which by the way i think is a good record.

music seems alot more comerical in america, these bands barely register on out minds here, were all about the gossip the klaxons and the horrors it seems, no me mind, i like hip hop its fun and in the videos you see tits, partys and drinking, i like that, call me shallow but id rather see ladys bums in vids than sweaty men screaming like they just got dumped when you know that the only reasons girls fuck um is that they in a band, is that why nin are so popular here cause hes the hero to no girl bad taste in movies can't dress well geeks?

Niiiiiice. So my guess is you haven't heard any Roots, Nas, Edan, De La Soul, MF Doom, Common, One Be Lo, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Jean Grae.... etc?

Nobdoy has to like hip hop and I certainly understand why some people don't, but I can't respect someones opinion who sounds like the only thing they've heard from the genre is 50 cent and Lil Jon.

One thing I want to know about some people though is why music HAS to be some deep, lyrically profound journey with perfect instrumentation. Why can't it just be some fun, free stuff? I personally enjoy Disco (I said it... sue me). And I really don't get all the hatred toward that kind of music.

I had the precise same reaction after running across her caterwauling one night while channel surfing. I think I did a Three Stooges-quality doubletake. It was a very disorienting WTF?!? moment.

The only two that really come to mind (off of a long list of songs which, while dreadful, were prosaic and bland enough not to cause this sort of reaction), I would mention that awful Chumawumba song that you couldn't escape for @ 6 weeks in '97 and the worst song in pop music history, Dexy's Midnight Runners' version of Come On Eileen.

It's not the song itself, it was nicely covered in an uptempo version by the Ska band Save Ferris, it's that wretched tortured atrocity Kevin Rowland inflicted on the planet in '83, specifically.
