i have only heard the first album, but too me its like they took the formula of the red house painters and made a more coherant album but if you clearly take on someonelses sound wholesale, umm well I don't know

I see your argument. Before I go on, I have to admit I thought this thread was about the RHP and the topic thread title referred to a new work of theirs. I've only seen the painters I've never even heard of the swimmers.
On to my opinion on other people stealing styles. To me if they some how make it their own it can be forgiven if they are doing creative work within the boundaries that another artist drew out. A good example would be all of the artists that followed the Nick Drake formula. He gave birth to that style but many artists have adapted it and done some interesting stuff in that vein. I guess some people have to start somewhere to find their sea legs and I guess they just use their influences as training wheels.

Thanks for the track offering but I did a search online and I found a couple of tracks of theirs. I defintely see the comparison. They seem alot more bland than the RHP's. Less of an emotional core and more focused on that particular sound.

yeah your right, Its like part of what was great about rhp is that they were far from easy listening, its some of it was real endurance, some songs lovely some songs difficult to say the least, its like they have taken the formula and knocked all the corners off and made in more cohesive and also more bland.

Songs For A Blue Guitar by The Red House Painters is a fucking masterpiece. I do recall hearing something of The Great Lake Swimmers...a while ago. I'll check 'em out again though.

I love songs for a blue guitar i got it in mvc for 99p, I love rhp covers like i am a rock and silly love songs, some bands on 4ad back in the day were shit and overated such as the pixies and throwing muses, but rhp were a cult gem

Fuck...I disagree on both counts. I like practically everything Pixies put out including the admitedly disappointing Trompe Le Monde. Throwing Muses i'm a little less enthusiastic about but The Real Ramona soars close to perfection.
I do agree wholeheartedly though with your comment on RHP covers. In particular Silly Love Songs.
