Lesbian kiss falls flatter than a pancake

By MIKE HENDRICKS

Just one kiss. That’s all it took — to get thrown out of the IHOP in Grandview.

“It was a kiss I would share with my uncle,” Blair Funk told me. Except it wasn’t her uncle she kissed. It was her honey, Eva Sandoval.

Two young women sharing a kiss didn’t seem inappropriate to the other couple in the restaurant booth that night, Jackie Smith and the woman with whom she shares her life, Toni Smith. But someone watching the scene was offended.

So later, the manager confronted them in the lobby and told them to get out.

The way Blair tells it, “He said, ‘I have to tell you, we’ve had some complaints about public displays of affection, and we’re a family restaurant. We can’t accept it, and we won’t accept it.’

“The way he worded it was like: We don’t accept you.”

These days it’s rare for gays and lesbians to be denied service in restaurants for acting like who they are. Blair assures me that she and Eva did nothing that wouldn’t have been appropriate for a man and a woman to do at a dinner date. No heavy makeout. No groping.

However, incidents like this one are not unheard of, and the people affected often can do nothing about it.

There is no federal law prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. Neither Kansas nor Missouri are among the few states that protect gay people from being discriminated against in areas of employment, housing and public accommodations.

Kansas City does have an ordinance protecting gays, as do St. Louis, Columbia and University City. But if you’re anywhere else in Missouri and you’re gay, you can legally be denied service in restaurant. Landlords can refuse to rent you a place to live.

You can even be canned from your job on the suspicion that you’re romantically inclined toward members of your own sex.

“Many people are shocked to hear that people can be fired from their jobs for being gay or being perceived to be gay,” says Julie Brueggemann, executive director of the Missouri gay rights group Promo.

That would change if bills pending in Kansas and Missouri would ever pass. It’s only the first year for Senate Bill 163 in Kansas. But the so-called Missouri Nondiscrimination Act, House Bill 819, has been up time and again.

And as in past years, it has almost zero chance in Jefferson City, says Rep. Jeneé Lowe, a Kansas City Democrat, the bill’s sponsor.

“It’s surprising to me,” Lowe says, “how many people think there’s federal legislation. But there is no law.”

No law, but there is power in public opinion. So the night that she and her friends were evicted from the restaurant, Jackie Smith started tapping furiously on her computer keyboard.

E-mails to the media yielded a TV report on Fox 4, as well as a call from me.

Promo and other civil rights groups responded with support. IHOP was apologetic.

“Thank you for taking the time to contact us concerning your experience at the IHOP in Grandview,” began the letter from someone identifying himself as the guest services representative at the company’s headquarters in Glendale, Calif.

“We are sorry to learn of the difficulties you encountered at this location. Please be assured that the matter will be shared with the proper individuals to address your concerns.”

When I called the Grandview restaurant for comment I was told to ring the company headquarters. But the P.R. director there failed to return my phone calls. However, I can tell you that the restaurant chain wants Blair, Eva, Jackie and Toni to come back for pancakes sometime.

“It is our hope,” the guest services rep wrote, “that you will once again allow us to earn your patronage.”

Jackie isn’t ruling it out entirely.

“But it’s not likely,” she said.

I see women who are just friends kiss all the time at my theater when they meet or say goodbye. I thought it was pretty commonly accepted that women can kiss each other. But then again, Grandview is a pretty white trash area. It's not much different than nearby Lee's Summit, which is were the crazy lady from Jesus Camp is based.

Maybe it was her that complained.

It depends if they were hot or not. From the sounds of it, they weren't.

Probably more of the Rosie type.

Could have been Peter Pace.

I thought that being gay was slowly turning into an acceptable lifestyle?

Two women kissing is a stupid reason to have them kicked out of an IHOP.

I wonder what Waffle House would've done.

Well there is always two sides to the story. What they call "like kissing your uncle" may have in fact been something inappropriate regardless of sexual orientation. Not that I'm calling them liars, but they did sound pretty bitter.

So? It's legal for them to be refused service. Sounds very similar to what happened to our black friends many years ago.

What do you mean, "So"? The history of gay people and black people aren’t even close to being the same. And If this does in fact makes gay people the new blacks, might as well lump every minority on the planet into that basket.

We're not talking "on the planet," we're simply talking about the group in America that's now experiencing the most discrimination, which happens to be homosexuals. Thus, they are "the new blacks" as I have so nochalantly put it. If your only argument involves twisting my words, then I'd try finding a new argument.

In this fight between the most oppressed my vote goes to the Jews. Especially in case when the Jewish person is happened to be a black lesbian.

Every minority? Were you trying to say the oppressed minority in some countries (could the the oppressed majority;) )?

Funny story: I once had a class with a lesbian who had a jewish dad and a black mom, and with another kid whose grandfather was an active member of the KKK.

My argument is that no one group could ever be the "new blacks"... your comparison is very weak and unnecessary. I was also trying to hint at the fact that this type of discrimination doesn't just happen to Gays, it also happens to other minorities. So according to you they would also be the "new blacks", and I just don't see that.

I would say that blacks are still the most oppressed, if not tied with Mexican immigrants...

i was saying that you could choose any minority in the world and the same shit would, if it hasn't already, happen...

Ok, you're right, no group will be able to experience the same kind of discrimination that blacks have in this country. All I'm saying, which you seem to keep ignoring, is that this kind of shit probably wouldn't happen with any other group in America as of today. I mean, yeah a restaurant manager can refuse service to a black or hispanic man, but not legally. With homosexuals, they can do that by law....can you think of any other group in this country that has to deal with that? No. By calling them the new blacks, I didn't in any way say that they're going through the same treatment. They're the new oppressed minority. You're being unbelieveably uptight about this....it was a simple comparison, that's all. If I had called them the new Jews, would you have said anything? After all, historically the Jews have been persecuted worse by far than any other people.

I could make a case for the Irish too. Blacks could be "the new Irish." When they came over here during the potato famine, they were treated worse than blacks were in many parts of America....especially the northeast. The Irish people who came to New Orleans were force to dig ditches in the hot, humid, diseased swamps. At one point, up to 30,000 people in less than a year were believed to have died of exhaustion. Although they did not have to put up with it long term like the blacks did, they too suffered. We act like blacks are the only group that have been oppressed, which is not true by any stretch of the imagination.

What happened was really fucked up, i'm not disagreeing with you on this. and I also know what you're saying, but I still think its unfair to black people to make such a statement.

"what is this, the 50's?" would have been a better comparison to make.

Fair enough. Gays are not the new blacks. "What is this, the 1950's?" Plus, I suppose not all gays are oppressed.....just look at San Francisco and New York.

But Africans, including african americans, were one of the most oppressed people in history.

Sorry for being so uptight, I just find it unfair to compare shit like this to one another.

Meh, if it makes you feel any better I don't agree with the shit I say half the time. Go figure.

With mounting tensions throughout North and Central African regions, I think our government has been too slow to step up and condemn IHOPs actions. This is an international house of pancakes and surely we must provide better examples for the people and government of Libya. We must let them know that their people may eat at any of our houses of pancakes and that their actions will be judged on their own accord and not based on whether or not you are a Libyan.

My question is: How are you guys SURPRISED about this coming from fucking IHOP?

This is the same place that changed the name of french toast to 'freedom toast' in some locations after France said they wouldn't help with Iraq.

Apparently, Jesus loves overpriced pancakes.

Personally, I love them. I've even been to that very IHOP a few times. But the service was shitty. The wait was too long and select members of the staff were every bit as hospitable as the Star painted them. However, Jesus isn't the problem here, and neither are His followers, be they patrons of this joint or not. And from what I've seen at this location, most fall into the "not" category.

I'm not sure why these girls were swapping tongue jewelry in a dining establishment in the first place, classy as that move is (note this statement is dripping with sarcasm), but just about the last thing I want to see is anyone - pretty, ugly, skinny, fat, black, white, gay or straight - making out when I'm having breakfast. It's not vulgar to show love and affection, but it's pretty disturbing and in many cases outright gross when any couple is slobbering and licking at one another while I've got a country scramble and two sausage patties in front of me waiting for my consumption.

I do think Brando was onto something about gays having some similarities to blacks as far as opposing predjudices go. That said, "You're picking on me because I'm gay" is rapidly becoming the new race card. Only I still accept the race card on occasions depending on what the situation is.

Gay card! That should work better than my "You're only picking on me cause I made out with your girlfriend and smoked all your pot." card.
