I used to be a regular around here (some of you old timers might remember me) and I also used to run "The Bloody Good Horror Page". God, it seems like forever ago.
Anyhoo, I've been out of the scene for a while and I was wondering if "The Burning" has ever been released on DVD. I was looking for it on Netflix and didn't see it. All I have is a crappy Amazon.com VHS that has a generic amazon cover. It is one of my favorite 80's slashers.
For as long as I can remember there has been rumors about this coming out... there must be some major rights issues considering this was actually a theatrical release. Hell, I can buy Sleepaway Camp III on DVD, why not this?
Does anyone know anything about it's status?

it was initially announced a number of years ago and then cancelled
there is supposedly going to be a 2 disc special edition of it coming out later this year or next year although nothing has been officially confirmed regarding that
so it's really just a case of wait and hope (or get the region 2 disc which while uncut pretty much sucks image wise)

Hey Mojo nice to see you back. I remember you from my early days on the boards (This month marks my five year anniversary by the way). I have been waiting for The Burning for several years now and as far as I know I could be waiting several more. What's the deal with it? Why won't some company like Anchor Bay release this already? Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

considering that it was given a HD transfer i think (really really really hope) that something might be coming along soon
i mean, look at Monster Squad, it got a HD transer and is now getting a proper release......

Fingers crossed. I mean I haven't even seen it before so I'm REALLY looking forward to it. I mean it has the effects work of the great Tom Savini going for it. Need I say more? Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

There's a Region 2 (UK) and a HD on thew ay but I think Americans got ripped with no release!
There are no extras on the Region 2 but it's worth a look if you can play them! It has no cuts!

Wow... glad I bought it when I did.

Fortunately, if you do have this VHS you'll be happy to know that it is the FULL uncut version of the film, something that is hard to come by these days. All the finger snipping is intact!
Plus, it's great to see Jason Alexander amble his way through his role and swim with his shirt on. This will remain one of the lost gems until it's released on DVD.

The Burning has been that one horror movie that I've always wanted to see but never been able to. The anticipation is probably built up too high at this point but I simply cannot wait for a proper DVD release.

I actually have an excellent version of The Burning, full UNCUT with the MGM logo in the beginning of the movie, ripped to XVID fom "Voom HD" or "Monster HD" as the logo in the upper right corner says a few times through the movie as well.
So YES, MGM have actually remastered the movie already.
Iīve NEVER seen a better version of the movie. All the night time shots are crystal clear so that no gore getīs lost in the darkness as the old versions.
And the movie has been color corrected as well.
ITīs an AMAZING version.
But why the hell MGM chose to put it on HDTV instead on DVD is a mystery to me.
I also have the 80:s horror movie Scarecrows full uncut from HDTV on XVID, and that TO has the MGM logo in the beginning.
That one to looks incredible with perfect contrast in the dark scenes.
So what the hell is MGM waiting for???
Thereīs LOTS of fans around the world waiting for these movies.
Since I found these on the net and didnīt record them myself I do not know exactly WHEN they were airing on Voom HD. I downloaded them 1-2 months ago.
So if you got Voom HD, keep your eyes open for these versions if they are still on the air.
COME ON MGM!!!!!!! You got the HD masters. Now get of your lazy asses and release them!!!
Iīll pay ANYTHING!!! ;)

Agreed.
They keep releasing the same goddamn movies over and over again. And most recently, their selection hasn't been all that great.

Yeah the R2 disc is bare bones and appears to be a straight transfer with no remastering, but it's still fucking UNCUT!!!! And if you guys know VIPCO like us BRITS do you'll know they claim to be the saviours of the video nasties but every dvd they do is pretty much CUT!!! BOOOOOOOO you bastards!!!! I was surprised this movie was released intact!! Awesome.

Well here is some news I found at Bloody-Disgusting:
Michael Felsher of RedShirt Pictures just called in on DEADPIT Radio and had news regarding some upcoming projects including some extras included on the Monster Squad DVD and the status of the Night of the Creeps DVD, but did break some news on an upcoming 20th Anniversary of Hellraiser he's working on for Anchor Bay (now called Starz Home Entertainment). Today he spilled the beans on a DVD release I'm sure you'll freak over, read on for the skinny.
"I've done three new interviews with Ashley Laurence, Andrew Robinson (first ever interview about Hellraiser) and Christopher Young (composer)," he tells Dead Pit, he also discusses another really interesting project, "I just got hired on a job which I can't talk about (haha) but I'm interviewing Tom Savini for, its one of the films he did effects for a long time ago...of all the slasher films he did in the early 80's its the only one still not on DVD."
Could he be talking about THE BURNING?!?!?! Let's hope so!
In the 1981 film, which is one of the Weinstein's first, a former summer camp caretaker, horribly burned from a prank gone wrong, lurks around an upstate New York summer camp bent on killing the teenagers responsible for his disfigurement.
Well looks like we may FINALLY be getting some development going with a Burning dvd. XCoRyX provided me with a way to see the movie which I was going to do over the weekend but now I just might wait it out. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Weird (again) how I discussed The Burning and the next day something related to it happens...
Same with discussing Lisa Wilcox & Joe Pilato, and now they got added to a local movie convention.
Weird.
But nonetheless I watched the movie - and its fucking GREAT. Easily one of the best slasher flicks out there...its right up there with whatever slashers you yourself may hold up high. The music score is just awesome.
Jason Alexander in his first film = priceless. Holly Hunter makes a small appearance in HER first film too, same with Fisher Stevens.
8/10

Well after years of waiting (im)patiently we are finally getting what we deserve. It has been verified today that The Burning will be arriving on dvd on September 11th UNCUT! It will be a remastered hi-def widescreen transfer, director commentary, interview with Savini, and behind the scenes footage of his effects. DID I MENTION THAT IT'S UNCUT!? Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

WHOHOOOO :D
AT LAST!!!!!!!!!!
I wonder if they will release it on Blu-Ray as well since they got the HD master ;)
Iīve stopped buying DVD since I got my HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players.
But if an HD release is not coming in the near future, then THIS is one of the last few DVD:s I just GOTTA buy :)
Itīs about time now. Canīt believe it took 10 years for it to arrive on DVD (the horrible DVD:s from VIPCO and DRAGON doesnīt count).

I have been doing a whole hell of a lot of catching up on unseen horror movies, and after much anticipation (since I joined this site in 2002) I have finally gotten to view The Burning... AND WITNESS IT'S AWESOMENESS! This might be Tom Savini's best effects laden film of all. I mean nothing will top the shotgun blast in Maniac but overall this film is probably the best.
I actually liked a couple of the characters too. A bit of overacting but the character of Eddie was actually played believably. It was also nice to see Jason Alexander as Dave. He was actually pretty damn likeable and brought a couple of smirks to my face.
Definitely going to buy the dvd when it comes out in a few months. I was looking forward to this one for five years and I am really glad it lived up to my expectations.

I've always been pleased with my VIPCO dvd. They so often get it wrong and release movies CUT, but this bad boy was the full UNCUT version. As JAGGED HALO said, it's as grainy as fuck, but I like it that way because it retains that natural, edgy 80's "snuff" vhs vibe. :D
But this new edition sounds fucking awesome. I would love to see behind the scenes footage and listen to a commentary! :)
Speaking of old Schmoe reunions, I have also returned.... why is everybody running? Anyway, I'll be picking the gem up the day it's released, it's about time this movie hits DVD. I mean if you have Street Trash and Body Melt on DVD, this has to be released too.

Wow, I didn't expect to see you popping up in here dude. Long time no see. I haven't seen a sexism discussion with skweemkween in a long time... ha ha. Good to see you come back though dude. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.
Yeah, I just came back from vacation visiting Skweemkween. Saw "The Host" which is an excellent Asian horror flick. Now I'm looking for info on The Burning DVD, trying to get, cost, features, etc. I'm really psyched for this film to finally hit on something besides the grainy VHS tape I have of it.
Bloody hell. I just found the info I was looking for..... in the next forum down. /slaps forehead Damn I feel stupid.
