Wahlberg: "I Had Problems with Scorsese"

Mark Wahlberg found it difficult working alongside Martin Scorsese on The Departed as the pair were "constantly struggling" with one another. The actor admits it was a harrowing experience behind the scenes of the Oscar-winning movie, because he had different creative ideas from the director. He says, "Marty and I were constantly in this struggle. I had problems with Marty. He was 'I'm Martin Scorsese... da-dee-da.' He was pushing me in different ways." And the star admits playing the role of foul-mouthed cop Sergeant Dignam - which earned him a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination - caused him to take his frustration out on the rest of the cast. Wahlberg adds, "But it wasn't just Marty. The whole time I was in the character so I was mad at everybody. It was Leo (DiCaprio), Matt (Damon) and Jack (Nicholson). F**k Jack too. We were able to laugh about it afterwards and we have a great relationship now and we're going to do other stuff in the future."

"I'm Martin Scorsese...da-dee-da"

Sounds sarcastic to me. Any thoughts?

I noticed in the after-party of the Oscars when he was asked what it was like to work with Scorsese, it's like he didn't know what to say. It seemed like he was just trying to think of something off the top of his head that would qualify for a decent answer.

Of course, he could also just be that way.:D

IMDB? Quoted from IMDB? Who gets quotes from there? 12 year olds?

I SEEN Walhberg actually discuss that he and Scorcese are in talks to do the prequel/sequels.

IMDB is an amazing site. If you are saying that items from there are not always reliable that is ok because even the New York Times has been known to have screwed up news items. It's just gossip, not legal papers. :D

Most of the time when a some pompous celebrity goes "I'm (Insert Jackass's name) I know how to do it better than you because im more famous!" you slap them across the face!

But when it's Scorsese saying it, you fucking listen!

From seeing him on a few talk shows, I am sure he was just making jokes about it. He has one of those sense of humors that you arent sure if he is joking or serious by the way he says things. On Leno the other night he was like that. But in the end he is just kidding around.

Wahlberg reveals salty sniping with Scorsese on 'Departed' set

Mark Wahlberg said that he and director Martin Scorsese were often at each other's throat during the filming of "The Departed."

Speaking to the Telegraph in London while promoting his new movie, "Shooter," Wahlberg revealed the behind-the-scenes drama for the first time, adding: "Marty and I were constantly in this struggle. I had problems with Marty."

According to the newspaper, Wahlberg, who was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of an abrasive police sergeant in "The Departed," said part of the problem stemmed from his need to squeeze in his role in "The Departed" between filming "Four Brothers" and "Invincible."

"I was only supposed to do a couple of weeks on 'The Departed,' so I was able to grow my hair for 'Invincible.' But then the schedule changed, and four months later I'm still working on 'The Departed,' so I wouldn't cut my hair and Marty was pissed off," he says, remembering their expletive-filled exchanges. "He was like, 'You've got to cut your ... hair,' and I was, 'I don't give a ... .'

"He was, 'I'm Martin Scorsese ... da-dee-da.'

"I said, 'Well, I'm not getting paid for this ... da-dee-da. What the ... ?' He was pushing me in different ways. There was one scene at the end where I come back and shoot Matt Damon. I asked Marty, 'Why can't we do it right now, because the set's there.' And he's like, 'Oh, I'm not creatively there yet.' "

Wahlberg threw his hands up in exasperation at the memory, according to the newspaper. "All I got to do is walk in and shoot the guy in the ... face. So I ask to talk to Marty, and he sent his assistant over. I ask where Marty was, and the assistant said, 'Marty said everything's great, you're doing a good job, but we're not shooting that scene.'

"Marty liked to play that game, but he didn't like it at 7 o'clock in the morning when he still needed a little rest and I'm out there yelling and screaming, and he comes out of his trailer and says, 'What ... [is] going on?' He only wanted it at 9 o'clock when we were ready to roll."

"But it wasn't just Marty. The whole time I was in the character, so I was mad at everybody. It was Leo [DiCaprio], Matt [Damon] and Jack [Nicholson]. ... Jack too."

Fast-forward several Oscars later, and all differences have been put aside. Wahlberg told the newspaper that he can laugh at it all now.

"We were able to laugh about it afterwards, and we have a great relationship now and we're going to do other stuff in the future," he said.

Wahlberg and Scorsese are already talking about teaming up again on both a prequel and sequel to "The Departed," which landed several Oscars, including for best picture and best director.

"I've never made a prequel or sequel to any movie I've done before, and they will have to be better than the first one, but obviously, with a guy like Marty it seems like a pretty safe bet," Wahlberg told the London paper.

AFter reading that article, I can see how he could've been mad. He was kept over past when he should have been done and then he is the one being pressured to conform to this late running movie when he is also working on two other projects. Then for Marty to say he is not creatively ready to shoot a scene when it is all set up and so easily done, does seem very aggravating.

So, I guess I'm on Wahlberg's side on this one. Just cause Scorcese is a great director does not mean he is perfect. We all can be wrong at times.

Wow, Wahlberg had problems working with Scorsese but not David O' Russell? Weird.

There's nothing wrong with being difficult, especially in the movie industry. Hell, Marlon Brando was practically impossible to work with but as we all know he was the best....

I side with Wahlberg about the scheduling problem, I gotta say. I shoot student projects all the time, and there's NOTHING more frustrating than having the actors, wardrobe, set, everything prepared and the director says he doesn't want to do the scene yet.

Luckily, at the student level peer pressure can overcome any ego, so it usually gets filmed anyway.

Suck it up Marky Mark. You're in the big leagues now, and you should thank your lucky stars you were cast in a movie with Marty directing.

What he said, plus, it seems to me that Wahlberg was being a bit of a brat. All that crap about not wanting to cut his hair. Damn lucky to be working at all.

Considering he once beat a guy almost to death and punched his eye out (literally), I would agree that he probably has a short temper, lol.

I know; Wahlberg got an Oscar nomination (his first), and Scorcese won the Oscar for Best Director (his first).

Somebody did something right.

"And Mark Walhberg.....ok I'm gonna leave you alone. You scare me." - Will Ferrell at last years Academy Awards.

Mark Walhberg rules. He could punch a 9 year old in the face while pissing on the kids paraplegic grandmother and I would just shrug it off as "Whatever, Walhberg fucking rules."

If Scorsese really was like that then extra kudos to Mark for not putting up with it. I hate all of these stories about cocky directors thinking really highly of themselves because of their previous successes. Way to go, Mark.
