The discussion forum for this film over at imdb.com is pretty dead, so I thought I'd bring it up here. This thread refers to the original version, not the remake.
Personally, I think it is one of the most frightening films I have ever seen. Although I am a fan of horror films, I tend to not be scared by them. This flick, however, really gets under my skin, especially the final scene with the eerie music.
Anway, if you saw this, what did you think?

The original is a great thriller. I own the Criterion release and am very pleased with the movie. The ending rules. The American remake on the other hand.....
Terrible.
And here's the kicker:
They're directed by the same guy.

:SPOILERS:
Wow, i know about the origianl version and its downbeat ending, so i thought the remake would have the same thing. Unfournately, the ending was tremendous overkill to what the original had intended.
Although i did get a kick out of Kiefer get revenge on Jeff Bridge's character
EDIT- my bad for not discussing the orignal, is aw the ending on Bravo's scariest movie moments, and being ver unsettled by it

Yeah, I own the Criterion DVD as well.
About a week ago, I found the remake on sale for a few bucks, so I bought it. Yeah, big mistake. The ending was terrible, as well as the expanded annoying girlfriend sub-plot.

I've never seen the original. I SORT OF liked the remake.
Hmmm... I thought the ending was a little too Hollywood. I guess I know what happens at the end of the original and maybe they thought audiences in the US couldn't handle it?

I hated both movies. Personally, I thought the original was fucking terrible. I don't know if I just have a fundamental disconnect with a lot of foreign horror/suspense because I felt that both Ring and Spoorloos were dreadfully boring, had no atmosphere, and were completely uninteresting.

Wow.... its funny this movie should be mentioned. I just watched the original last night. Good stuff. I can see why some people don't like it, cause it is slow moving. But thats what does it for me. It just creeps forward, dragging the viewer in more and more into these two slightly insane peoples worlds..... its unerving to me. I love it. And that depressing, offbeat ending..... awesome.

Yeah, the original does have a kickass ending. That guy was fucking sinister.

The Vanishing (the original) is a great thriller indeed, and it features, in my opinion, one of the best endings ever. The ending is very disturbing and haunting. I also own the Criterion DVD, and I've seen the film a few times.
I haven't seen the remake, however. I don't think I want to.
