View Full Version : Clownhouse Controversy

Does anyone know exactly what happened with director Victor Salva and thr little boy from his Clownhouse movie? I think he raped him during production of the movie and it was not discovered until his next movie Powder. Does anyone know how he got caught and what happened to the both of them? I'm guessing that the US doesn't sell the Clownhouse DVD because of that controversy.

Here is some info I found out from Wikipedia:

His directing career has been overshadowed by his 1988 conviction for having oral sex with a 12-year-old boy, Nathan Forest Winters, who had acted in his low-budget slasher movie Clownhouse. The sexual acts were videotaped by Salva, who pled guilty to the charges. In 1995, the boy brought attention to Salva's past by publicly boycotting his film Powder, which was a moderate success despite the unwanted publicity. Salva did not make another studio film until 2001, when he emerged from pariah status in Hollywood with the hit horror film Jeepers Creepers and its 2003 sequel.

Salva's early work attracted the attention of Francis Ford Coppola, who produced Clownhouse, Powder, Jeepers Creepers, and Jeepers Creepers 2.

In April 1988, Salva pleaded guilty to one count of lewd and lascivious conduct, one count of oral copulation with a person under 14 and three counts of procuring a child for pornography. Salva was sentenced to three years in prison. He served 15 months of the sentence before being paroled.

Salva has consistently downplayed his crime,[citation needed] asserting that the sexual contact with the sixth grader was "consensual."[citation needed] Nonetheless, he has expressed regret over what he has termed his "terrible mistake."

Sick bastard. He shouldn't be allowed to be around children anymore. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Its a shitty situation because Clownhouse is such a damn great horror flick...to my knowledge,as far as it goes back, Clownhouse was THE scariest flick to me growing up for years and years, and I lost track of it until seeing it at a Video Update store when I was about 10-11 and thats when I got re-hooked on it and still to this day I find it one of my favorites in the genre and it still spooks me the hell out.

Salva definetly should(ve) been punished and its a tragedy in the end...but from a viewers standpoint I just watch the movie for what it was.

If your going to hate on this movie, and you're a fan of the Jeepers Creepers films,or Powder etc., your being hypocritical I think.

I feel for Nathan Forrest Winters and its terrible, but I still find the movie to be great and I even recommend it...I doubt Salva is profiting from the movie at all anymore so its not as if you're giving Salva cash.

You guys are forgetting, isn't there a scene in Clownhouse in which Nathan Forrest Winters is shown partially naked? Even still, nudity or child pornography is not what's at the heart of the movie, so I don't see any reason to boycott the movie. I own it, but haven't watched it yet. I've heard a lot of good things about it.

I haven't seen Clownhouse but it has nothing to do with the controversy surrounding it. I actually have seen the bland Jeepers Creepers and the putrid sequel. However, I probably won't be paying money to see it. I borrowed the JC movies from a coworker. I actually found the sequel to be even more homoerotic than NIGHTMARE 2! Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

I am not a big fan of Clownhouse, and it has nothing to do with the controversy. It's a crappy film IMO... it really feels like a cheaply made TV movie. Some creepy visuals but that's about it.

And yes, the first 10 minutes feature his victim walking out of his bedroom in tighty whitey's... complete with an incredibly inappropriate closeup of: you guessed it...

Jeepers Creepers is okay, although disappointing in the end... and the sequel was terrible. Never seen Powder though.

As far as i'm concerned Salva's done time for his crime. There's no reason why Clownhouse shouldn't be sold in the US.

They stopped releasing the DVD though...it only made it out very shortly/rarely.

Pretty much the DVD can only get bought on ebay or through forums and such if I recall right?

Being a big fan of it, I'd definetly say just buy it because I also think it will be a while before it gets any solid distribution for sales/rentals,if ever...but its really either a love/hate flick (what isn't,though?).

The dvd was on the shelves for a few weeks but MGM pulled it because people complained and they couldn't be assed with the bad publicity.

Yes, what SALVA did was sick, but ROMAN POLANSKI is getting butt fucked by every movie critic going. If they can forget what he did and big up his movies, then why not show some repsect to SALVA'S skills (cue blowjob joke). :p

As far as the film goes, I don't have to keep reminding everone that it's my favourite of all time. ;)

Fucking hell I just realised that post had way too many puns. Phrases like "pulled it" and "assed" shouldn't be used in reference to a director whose main bodies of work depict skimpy boys running around in their y-fronts, having baths together and weeing their pants! LOL

I know this sounds sick but who gave who head? I know it's a weird question to ask but if SALVA was doing the sucking that makes it even fucking worse. It's no defence for him, but if the kid was doing it to him I guess he could argue he closed his eyes and pretended it was a fit bird! :(

I'm always seeing people in these forums saying they can't find movies, and then i do a 2 second search and find like 10 different places to pick it up. Clownhouse is on Netflix also, which I would recommend to all of you guys. They have almost everything, including some more obscure stuff.

clownhouse is listed on netlix, but you cant get the dvd. if you put it on your queue, it will put it under your "saved movies" category because its not in print anymore.

I saw Clownhouse LONG before I knew about the controversy and found it to be one of the most boring, indulgent pieces of shit I had ever seen. I also saw Jeepers Creepers 1 before I knew about Salva and still consider it The Worst Horror Movie I Have Ever Seen. NOW that I know he is a convicted child molester I have more reasons than ever to avoid his films like the plague besides just a singular lack of talent...

Yeah dude that fucking artwork is da bomb!!! I found it a couple of years ago on ebay too. I'm pretty sure it's the Australian video release. I tried to find it to put it up on the vhs covers thread. Glad you found it, it's a superb cover! There was also this woman who was selling this amazing piece of artwork. It was Cheezo's head from the UK video artwork created with some kind of shiny fucking paint! I can't explain it, but it rocked! It was about £75 though, and at the time I had nowhere to put it! I'll see if I can find it again.

I also really liked JEEPERS CREEPERS. It has a special memory for me because it's the only movie I've seen in an American cinema. We watched it when we were in SACRAMENTO. I loved every minute! That's also where I got my SACRAMENTO KINGS DOUG CHRISTIE jersey! Sweet!

P.S. - I'd also bum NATHAN FORREST WINTERS. I'd tell him there is a killer clown behind him, wait for him to turn around, and touch him in his pants. ;)

I remember a couple of coworkers raving about it but saying they were disappointed because the villain was "gay". Years later now that I have seen it I have no idea what they were talking about... if anything JC 2 was the gayer movie... Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

I'm not a hundred percent sure but I doubt you'll find it on netflix. If you do it'll probably be a copy. Everywhere you go it'll say "coming soon" or "currently out of stock" but in reality no more have been or will be produced. Your best bet is to buy a cheap copy off EBAY.

I just got ahold of this flick, have to say I'm a little dissapointed. The innocent clown near the begining of the movie that scared the coulrophobic kid was a hell of a lot more creepy to me than the actual bad guys. I love the trailer for this movie though, very eerie music in it.

Meh. Hating on Salva's filmography because of his horrible acts would be like hating Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown because of Polanski's. Sometimes you just gotta disassociate the man's work from the man himself.

Clownhouse was a decently creepy movie. Not nearly as creepy as I would have liked but it was entertaining enough.

I love Jeepers Creepers. Its pure awesomeness. I hate Jeepers Creepers 2. Not because of the homoerotic stuff, but because I hated all the characters and the dialog was shitty. But the Creeper Vs. Truck scene was pretty badass.

He may be a sick fuck, but he has a good eye for the genre. Jeepers Creepers and Jeepers Creepers 2 were very slick looking films. Although the sequel sucks, there are some awesome visuals sprinkled throughout.

Avoid at all costs. There's no gore, the pace is snail-like, there are NO female characters (big surprise), there are whole stretches where NOTHING happens, and the gimmick of having the killers dress like clowns grows old after about two minutes. I'd even go so far as to say it might be the worst, most pretentious, and most overrated horror movie of the 80s. All copies of it must be burned...:D

Well, first off, as a gay male, what Salva did is utterly disgusting in every way. I'm glad he served time and really, he should have served more. The kid might not be ok to this day......
That being said, Clownhouse was a fucking creepy, moody piece of art. Downright scary at times. JC 1 was pretty darn good or at least had it's moments. JC 2, while being hugely homoerotic (the guys laying out on the bus was pretty hot), was fun as well. From my perspective, it was a nice change to have a horror movie that didn't have nothing but chick tits and ass. Not that i have a problem with that, that is a mainstay of horror, but again, it was nice for the change.
Again, Salva is a good director, but made a gross and unfortunate mistake that, I feel, he should have paid for a bit more.
