Tough choice but I had to go with Carpenter and Russel.

Burton & Depp.

Carpenter & Russell gave us Big Trouble in Little China, one of the worst movies I have ever had the displeasure of sitting through. And for that, I will never forgive them.

Tim and John, only for Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood.
Still, beats anything that Carpenter and Russel have ever done.

Carpenter and Russell. No doubt about it, no question whatsoever.

This is roughly akin to "Filet mignon vs. dog shit."

I'm gonna have to go with Carpenter/Russell. I like Burton/Depp, but "The Thing", "Escape From New York" and "Big Trouble In Little China" are classics

I'd say more like a Porterhouse vs. a Filet...In my opinon dog shit is a little harsh for Depp and Burton (I love the analogy though). With Russell and Carpenter you get your Filet, a New York Strip and a big juice bone for the dog.

I can't believe anyone would call Burton and Depp dogshit. I mean seriously. Ed Wood alone is one of my favorite films from the 90s and Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow are varying degrees of great.

I voted Carpenter & Russell....they made some of my favorite movies ever - Escape from New York, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China etc.

Not that Burton & Depp aren't a good team...Ed Wood is one of my favorite movies of all time. Edward Scissorhands is a solid flick but I didn't really like Sleepy Hallow (boring) and loathed Charlie and the Chcolate Factory. Didn't care for Corpse Bride neither.

Carpenter and Russell.

Nothing Burton & Depp have done even comes close to The Thing or Escape From New York.

John Carpenter & Kurt Russell

Nothing against Burton and Depp but in the flicks C&R have done together, Russell has a coolness that Depp can't match.

Carpenter & Russell. Easily.

Burton & Depp are good together, but nothing they've done - or could ever do - can match the prefection that is The Thing.

How can you argue:

Ghosts of Mars (2001)
Vampires (1998)
Escape from L.A. (1996)
Village of the Damned (1995)
In the Mouth of Madness (1995)
Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992)
They Live (1988)
Prince of Darkness (1987)
Big Trouble in Little China (1986)
Starman (1984)
Christine (1983)
The Thing (1982)
Escape from New York (1981)
The Fog (1980)
Halloween (1978)
Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)
Dark Star (1974)
Sorceror from Outer Space (1969)
Warrior and the Demon (1969) (as Johnny Carpenter)
Gorgo Versus Godzilla (1969)
Gorgon, the Space Monster (1969)
Terror from Space (1963)
Revenge of the Colossal Beasts (1962)

What a freaking resume! Throw in the fact that he not only directed but wrote, composed and produced most (damn near all) of them as well. The only one I wouldn’t watch again is Ghost of Mars.

Really, guys...at this point don't you know that I like to overstate the case on occasion for dramatic effect?

Filet Mignon vs. a day old Wendy's single. Is that better? :D

I can't believe Carpenter & Russell are winning, I think Depp & Burton are leagues better.

Carpenter & Russel

1.) Escape from New York -7/10
2.) The Thing -7/10
3.) Escape from L.A. -5/10
4.) Big Trouble In Little China -5/10
5.) Elvis -N/A

I like Carpenter's good movies (Assault, Halloween, Starman) more than his "cool" movies (the flicks he did with Russell). Also, I think In The Mouth of Madness (2/10) casts a pall on his resume and he hasn't had a truly good movie in over two decades.

Whereas

Burton & Depp

1.) Ed Wood -9/10
2.) Sleepy Hollow -8/10
3.) Edward Scissorhands -7/10
4.) Charlie and The Chocolate Factory -7/10
5.) Corpse Bride -N/A

Have made some fine quality films, including one of the ten best of '94. Depp is a much better actor than Russell and Burton is a more talented director, so it's pretty easy for me.

On a personal note though, I met Carpenter at a Q&A panel when he came and spoke to promote Ghosts of Mars and rarely have I seen a director more humble, audience-friendly, and professional. The crowd was full of pricks chanting for Carpenter to get off the stage so Sam Raimi's Spider-Man panel could start, but he handled himself like a gentleman and answered questions from fans for over an hour. He's a class act.

Probably because you gave the same rating to "The Thing" as you did for "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". I mean C'mon!

John Carpenter & Kurt Russel:

Elvis - N/A

Carpenter & Russel get my vote without a doubt. In my view The Thing is better than anything Burton has ever done.

You should have seen me 2 years ago, when I still had The Thing as a 4/10 based on an initial viewing. I really didn't like it the first time, but after much prodding I gave it another shot. While still certainly flawed and far from the masterpiece many inexplicably see it as, I did enjoy it overall and thought its last 25 minutes or so were tense and well done. I especially like the ambiguous ending. Anyway, yeah I think The Thing, though a very different type of film than Charlie, is about equally good for being a heavily flawed but overall enjoyable picture.

Burton and Depp ultimately make better movies. In terms of the films they're making, Carpenter and Russell are just a better team.

Yikes!
I remember the first time I saw "The Thing". It was on TNT and for some reason I thought I was about to watch Stephen King's "It".
As the movie began I started thinking What is this crap? Bring on the killer clown, damn it!
That way of thinking didn't last long though. From the kennel scene to the end I was glued to the chair.

Burton makes bad movies? As in he's incapable of making good films? Is that a joke or something? I'm just going to assume you haven't seen Edward Scissorhands or Ed Wood.

And as cool as Carpenter is he does occasionally make bad films or are we forgetting about Escape From LA, Ghosts Of Mars, and Village of the Damned.

ilovemovies
03-29-2007, 11:59 AM
Eh. As far as I'm concerned they both have made good movies and they both have made bad movies.

Of coarse we are only comparing Burton with Depp and Carpenter with Russell.

I liked The Thing but I don't get the love it's getting. It's a decent Alien type movie but I just don't think it's a GREAT movie like so many people seem to think. Infact, I didn't care for the alien itself. I thought the best scenes of the movie is the paronia between everyone knowing that one or more of them might have taken over by the alien. It sort of reminded me of an episode of The X-Files. Good not great.

And I've already mentioned my hate for Big Trouble in Little China. I thought that movie was a boring, tedious, loud and nonsense mess of a movie. There is not one thing I liked about it. It's one of the only movies I've ever given an 0/10. And I RARELY gives those out. They are even more rare than 10/10's for me.

I'm in the minority of not caring for Ed Wood. And I really didn't like Corpse Bride either. Still, I really liked Sleepy Hollow and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

So I vote for Depp/Burton because their best (Sleepy Hollow/Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, haven't seen Edward Scissorhands) is better than Carpenter/Russell's best (The Thing) and Carpenter/Russell's worse (Big Trouble in Little China) is FAR, FAR worse than Depp/Burton's worst (Corpse Bride).

Carpenter and Russell have made some pretty badass movies together. We got Plissken and MacReady.

However, Burton and Depp have made some quality flicks, and surpass anything Carpenter and Russell have done. Yeah, the Carpenter and Russell pairing have produced some fun flicks, but there's been some real genius that's come out of the Burton/Depp ficks.

He attempts those Spielberg moments of awe or emotion, but just can never get close for me.

I really don't understand why people call Burton's films just eye candy. Edward Scissorhands is a beautiful emotional fable and Ed Wood is a deeply moving film about filmaking and the friendship between two great characters. How are those films just eye candy?

I liked Ed Wood enough but Edward Scissorhands never did much for me. Its good enough as a quirky kinda thing, but when it tries to becomes anymore (enter Anthony Michael Hall) it just loses big time.

Planet of the Apes remake was trash, so was Charlie and Chocolate Factory.

His original Batman has aged horribly. And I haven't seen Batman Returns in a while.

Mars Attacks... no.

I loved Beetle Juice as a kid, not sure how I'd like it now.

Haven't seen Sleepy Hollow or Big Fish.

Buck Turgidson

Not everybody buys into the same films.

I find Burton's whole act really tiresome and cloying (I feel the same way about Lynch and his paint-by-numbers alienation bullshit and latter day over the top PT Anderson.)

I came away from Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood pretty much wishing everyone in both casts had checked into the Bates Motel.

You're right that everyone has a different opinion on films, but I wish more people would see films the way I do... even when I don't like a movie I can admit that it's still a good film. And even when I love a movie, I can admit that it has it's flaws and probably isn't nearly as appealing to audiences across the board.

However, It seems everytime I read a reveiw, people take their own opinion as fact and if they don't like a movie they say that it's a horrible film. I'm one of a few people that didn't love the Godfather series. I liked it a lot, but I didn't love it, however, I know that it's an amazing accomplishment in film and is probably one of the best series of films (the first two anyway) ever to be made.

I prefer Depp and Burton because of the style of films that I like, Scissorhands and Sleepyhollow are my two favorites of their collaborations. Ed Wood is probably the best film they've done together, but it's not my favorite of all the collaborations. Are they better films then say, the thing or escape from New York... tough to say, maybe not, but I personally like them better. However, they're way better films then Big Trouble in Little China or Escape From L.A. I love Big Trouble in Little China, it's all about fun, and that's what it was made for, but it's not a better movie then Edward Scissorhands, not in my opinion anyay. Escape from L.A. is garbage though, it makes Batman returns look like a good idea... and I think most of you would agree that it's not very good.

They've both had their successes together, and they've both had some head scratchers. However, if anyone hasn't seen Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands, or Big FIsh, then you really must see those before judging Tim Burton as a whole. Apes was trash, but Big Fish is very magical and the other two are both gorgeous films that hold their own.

Both groups have made some great films over the years, but my vote goes to Carpenter and Russell. But I honestly can't believe the mass amounts of Burton/Depp bashing. Those guys have made some very unique cinema together.
