After playing Earth Defence Force 2017 at my buddy's house, all the destruction and giant flying saucers made me want to watch Independence Day again. So, I went out and gave it a rent and remembered how much I love these disaster flicks. Anyway, I'm in the mood for some more explosions/devastation, so recommend away. Oh, and by the way, I'm confused at the amount of different DVDs of ID4 there are. Which is the best one to get? Stupid multiple releases of the same movie.

The Poisedon Adventure and The Towering Inferno (which I have yet to see myself) are the mothers of all modern disaster movies so they're always a good choice. Everything else is pretty much subpar:
The Day After Tomorrow
Twister
Supervolcano (a legitimate Discovery Channel movie)
The Core
Armageddon
Deep Impact
And they're not exactly disaster movies, but any Godzilla flick (or any affiliated Japanese monster movie) is filled with mass destruction.

Titanic
Dante's Peak
Volcano
Alive
Most Zombie flicks have that end of the world feel to them.

My favorite is The Poisedon Adventure...
not only is it a good disaster movie but there are characters you actually care about.

The Day After Tomorrow That's probably the worst possible choice.
I'd re-watch "Armageddon". It's cheesy, it's funny, it has Liv Tyler and lots of explosions.
Lots.

If Independence Day left you wanting more check out Mars Attacks! (1996).

I have the Independence Day (Five Star Collection) dvd. It was one of the first dvd purchased I made back in 2000. The Independence Day (Limited Edition) dvd more than likely is a much cleaner transfer than the previous one, but the previous has more special features and it's transfer still holds up well. If you aren't interested in any of that, there's just a single disc dvd out there with no extras relatively cheap.

The Towering Inferno is freakin' awesome. Realistic story with great characters and one of the best casts ever assembled (McQueen and Newman - how can you go wrong?).
Armageddon, ID4 are also high in my book. Haven't seen The Poseidon Adventure, though I saw the remake last year, not bad . . . not good, but not bad.

I had a free rental at Blockbuster, and I haven't seen Armageddon since it first came out, so I decided to give it a rent. I forgot how much I love that damn movie. It's not the most believable movie, but I love Bruce Willis, and it's quite the thrill ride. Can't wait for Transformers.

My favorite disaster film is probably Volcano with Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche. I was just watching it on TV yesterday, it still gets me every time. The scene with Drew Carey's brother in the subway is just heartbreaking, and I wanted to cheer again when the sound get sucked out of the film as the volcano explodes, then suddenly pops back in as all those windows explode. I'm a sucker for it.
