If a celebrity was known to be gay would you still believe him in straight roles? What about if they were an alchoholic, drug abuser, had sex with prostitutes, had strange religious beliefs, was a racist, sexist, whatever.....is there ANYTHING a celebrity could do that would taint them or make them unwatchable in your eyes no matter how good he or she did their job? Or maybe you're a person who's pretty much unfazed by all that stuff. Which one are you? Give some examples.

Michael Richards, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, PeeWee Herman, Jean-Claude Van Damme, those are just a few.

Just curious, but why Van Damme? I've heard is that the man like cocaine. Is there more than that?

Some actors who are basically 'damaged goods' now are:

Kevin Costner
Meg Ryan
Denise Richards

Interestingly, all three of them fell from grace(as it were) due to the ugly nature of their respective divorces.
Is it any wonder that none of them have been in anything respectable in recent years?

Val Kilmer anyone?

I don't have a problem with gay actor's taking straight roles. Just take a look at How I Met Your Mother on TV.

I thought Alec Baldwins role in Pearl Harbor was pretty unbelievable because of his politics. How I Met your Mother is a good show I agree with you there. Doogie does a convincing job. Anne Heche though I still have trouble seeing her straight even if she is married to a man. I also didn't like finding out Nile was gay on Fraser. I have a hard time seeing Robert Downey Jr as sober in his roles. These are just a few of the people that are harder than some for me not seeing past their personal lives.

Keith Richards is the fucking godfather of "damaged goods" if you ask me.

I don't think Kevin Costner is damaged goods, though I'd agree with the others on the your list. Costner got plenty of kudos for Open Range and The Guardian wasn't THAT bad. Plus he's got a potential franchise in Mr. Brooks due out later this year.

As far as damaged goods, hows about Vivica A. Fox? She hasn't been in anything for a while (her role in Kill Bill: Vol. I was practically a cameo) and now has an arrest under her belt.

I also think Lindsey Lohan's on set troubles have hurt her, not to mention her social life ain't helping much either.

Van Damme: He's a womanizer in the old fashioned sense, that he doesn't mind slapping a woman in the face for talking back to him, acts like a drill sargeant to his kids, and feels that since he's *the man* that he can do what he wants, regardless of his family situation (he used to sleep around, and when confronted by his wife, he'd slap her around and tell her to mind her own business).

ALL of this is shit I read , and saw interviews with him on TV in, in the mid nineties, and I was a HUGE Van Damme fan.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Need I say more?

Mel Gibson and Lindsay Lohan, for obvious reasons.

I'd put Paris Hilton on the list, but she never had any credibility to begin with.

It pains me to say this,

but could Harrison Ford be considered damaged goods?
especially since his last three films(K-19, Hollywood Homicide, and Firewall) were anything but good?

Those are just bad movie choices he made; unless you count him dating Calista Flockhart, his personal life hasn't made him damaged goods - just him and his agent. :D

He hasn't made a great movie since The Fugitive.

I loved Air Force One. And I think Random Hearts is a seriously underrated movie with Ford giving one of his best performances in that movie.

Kim Basinger has been damaged goods for quite a long time as far as I'm concerned.

I'll admit she's hot, but she was really annoying in Never Say Never Again and Batman(to name just two examples).
Plus the fact that she's been busy in recent years fighting Alec Baldwin.
And in basically every bit of news I hear about her, she sounds like a real nutjob.
I'll never know why she got the Oscar which should've gone to Gloria Stuart. :(

I don't know about Gloria Stuart getting the Oscar, but Basinger's career did hurt after her divorce, so did Baldwin's - though his has been resurrected as of late. Not Basinger; her short stint in 8 Mile is the only one worth mentioning, though she wasn't that good in it.

Good call.

I'm still a sucker for Van Damme movies. I will go rent anything that he puts out, and then laugh at myself for wasting an hour and a half of my life...but I'll be there to rent the next crap fest he puts out, no doubt about it.

I think Van Damme would have made a good agent in the Matrix movies. Or some kind of bad guy in there....preferably with little to no lines :D

I thought Basinger had good chemistry with Michael Douglas in The Sentinel.

When extra interviewed her she said she loved 24 and would love to be in it or something and Kiefer seemed open to the idea. I think she should do it. It could do wonders for her career.

I do have trouble separating myself from extreme personal feelings I've had about actors or actresses that have aggravated me with their actions in their personal lives (not being gay etc though). I think its best for actors to not be so out in front so they can better seep into their roles. I often really enjoy seeing movies with unknown actors. Just helps me get more into the movies. But having said that I also do have some favorite actors, so Im contradicting myself a bit here.
