A thread in Rant about how much this guy is maligned got me thinking about just how much I really like Costner. Sure, he's done some pretty crappy, overblown flicks (The Postman) but in the late 80's to early 90's, there was no one more consistently in great movies (he was in one of the ten best movies of the year in 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, and 1993) and think in the past few years he's returned to do some very solid work in movies like Upside of Anger, Open Range, and Thirteen Days. Unfortunately he doesn't get the respect he deserves because of a couple big mistakes.

He has been in some fantastic films, but he has never really given that one fantastic performance IMO. He came pretty close in JFK, but he was overshadowed by Stones brilliant direction and maybe the greatest supporting cast in movie history.

My favorite films he's appeared in (not necessarily his best performances).

1)Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

6)JFK
7)No Way Out
8)The Untouchables
9)Field of Dreams
10)Dances with Wolves

I haven't seen Bull Durham, Thirteen Days, or The Postman yet.

I haven't seen many of his movies but Field of Dreams was pretty good. I'm a baseball fan so it appealed to me even though it wasn't what I was expecting. I even remember being mildly entertained by 3000 Miles to Graceland. It was fun in a cheesy way. Costner thinking he was the son of Elvis. Rumor Has It was an abomination though. Interesting concept but every actor in the film was soooooo dry and wooden, ESPECIALLY Mark Ruffalo. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Open Range

Bull Durham

The Untouchables

The rest of his work is really forgettable. (Yes, even Dances With Wolves.) Am I alone in not being a big fan of this guy?

No you're not. I don't like the guy as an actor or director (always seems the same to me in every film-comes off wooden and his voice really gets on my nerves), but he has been in some great films, i.e. JFK, Open Range, Field of Dreams.

Exactly what is so bad about Postman. I caught like half of it on TV. I thought it was decent. I wasn't going gaga over it but I was expecting something far worse.

Glad to see there are others willing to admit they like The Postman and Waterworld. Neither will be mistaken for classics, but I thought they were both fun and enjoyable.

As for my favorite Costner film? The Untouchables.
