View Full Version : Favorite character entrances
Movies are made by their characters, and in some cases, the characters have really awesome entrances on screen that either capture the moment or set the mood for the rest of the scene.
What is your favorite character entrance in a film? (provide a picture or video of the moment if you can)
My favorite?
Back to the Future: Part 3
- The future Doc Brown walks on screen with a rifle to where Marty is being hanged by Mad Dog. Doc extends his scope, takes aim, and fires.
Reloads....and says...
"It'll shoot the fleas off a dog's back at five hundred yards, Tannen, and it's pointed straight at your head!!!"

Orson Welles as Harry Lime in The Third Man.
It's the cream of the crop for this topic.

Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in the West -- gotta love the camera moving from his back, circling towards his face, focusing on those intense blue eyes.

Very fitting as I'm watching this right now especially since it's the entrance of the actor in the movie as well:

QUENTIN already mentioned the best movie entrance of all time, so I guess I'll go with my second choice for this topic....

Yea, you're not going to beat Orson Welles in The Third Man. Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in the West is the one that comes closest, out of those already mentioned. But even that is a somewhat distant second.
However, how has no one yet mentioned Omar Shariff's entrance in Lawrence of Arabia? That is one amazing shot.

All are fucking excellent. Orson Welles in Third Man was terrific, although I think a few do top it. The one that comes to mind as the best would be:

Probably wouldn't have occured to me if I hadn't been over obsessing the movie lately, but Boris Karloff's entrance as the monster in Frankenstein is up there with all the great character entrances. Just a simple and creepy entrance. Good stuff.

Even though I knew it was coming, I would have to say that Harry Lime in The Third Man is the greatest entrance ever for a character in film.

Good point, that very well may be the second best ever.
Unless "The Star Child" counts as a character, but I tend to think of it more as a special effect.

I'd strongly urge you NOT to watch a clip of the entrance. Much of the power and strength of the scene comes from its context in the film, out of context it is impressive perhaps, but probably not mind-blowing. Just go rent The Third Man, any serious movie lover must come to see that film at some point in their lives.

Nicolas Cage in Face/Off - not getting out of the car with the wind blowing... that comes later. He shoots Travolta in the intro, but his real entrance is when he's dressed as a priest at the LA convention center and grabs that choir girl's ass. Hilarious.
Kate Beckinsale in Van Helsing - the most preposterous intro ever. Slow motion, drawing her sword and turning around, so we get a nice close up of her ass AND her tits in one shot ( a monet shot?).
Matthew McConauhey in Reign of Fire - riding a tank, stradling the turret like the barrel is his giant, America, dragon killing dick.
Peter Weller in Robocop 2 - His police car gets blown up and shot a million times by some gun theives. As it burns, he casually gets out and blows everyone away.
Aslan in Narnia - for over an hour everyone is talking about how great and noble and fearsome he is. Then he finally emerges. I got goosebumps.

That is a pretty damn good entrance, but like you said, one that doesn't immediately occur to you unless you think about it.
But that one reminded me of another great entrance from a classic horror movie: Max Schreck in Nosferatu. Certainly one of the creepiest entrances I can think of. For that matter, Willem Dafoe did an excellent rendition of it in Shadow of the Vampire. Just to see how spot-on he was is quite stunning, and therefore a great entrance in itself.
I guess I could also mention Bela Lugosi's entrance in Dracula, but eh. I think it's been parodied so many times by now that it's lost much of its power.
Oh yea, and here's one that hasn't been mentioned yet either: Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now. I just love that one. He starts talking in the shadows, and then he just does this thing where he jerks his head up so that one beam of light shines right on his face, and all of the tension building up around the mystique of his character throughout the movie is fulfilled in that one moment.

The T-Rex in JURASSIC PARK deserves a mention. As does Ash in ARMY OF DARKNESS. I smell a Ten Spot coming here.

Are you talking about his entrance as the Count or
his entrance as the monster:

Indeed, very creepy.

I think all the dinosaurs in the movie have great entrances...especially the raptors...but good call on the T-Rex...when I first saw that on screen at 10 years old, it freaked the shit out of me!

There's another member of that cast that makes quite a memorable entrance too.
