I loved the trailers of course, and the first half of DEATH PROOF better than the rest of the film(s)...the scenes where Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) was stalking Jungle Julia (Sydney Tamiia Poitier) and her posse of pussies at the Mexican bar/restaurant had so much fucking potential! But after that totally awesome-horrific-realistic car crash, it was all downhill from there!

Death Proof...I think I may be in the minority with that choice, but who knows.

Death Proof, though Planet Terror was incredible fun.

I was shocked at how well the girls handled Tarantino's dialogue...

Here's how I'd rate them out of a 100.

Planet Terror - 51
Death Proof - 49

Tomorrow it could be different.

I think Death Proof was a better movie, but Planet Terror was more fun.

Death Proof, to me, was about twice as good as Planet Terror. That's not saying that I didn't like Planet Terror, just that the only thing Planet Terror really offered was Rodriguez's geeked-out fanboy fantasy. It was fun, but it got tedious. I know the whole point of it was to be over-the-top, but I think it even got carried away with that at some points. It was fun in the context of the rest of Grindhouse, but on its own, I don't think it would have made for as good a movie. The Grindhouse concept as a whole is what made Planet Terror good.

Death Proof, on the other hand, would have still been a great movie even if it wasn't attached to the whole double feature concept. You've got classic Tarantino dialogue throughout, terrific performances (especially Kurt Russell, who was absolutely fantastic), one of the best car chases I've ever seen, and also genuine suspense (something that Planet Terror never even touches on). Death Proof is loads of fun, but even more than that, it also works as a 70's-style grindhouse movie...not just a geeked-out tribute to it, like Planet Terror is.

Death Proof was my favorite out of the two. Planet terror was deff. fun to watch but Death Proof was just great. The dialouge, acting, and of course it had Kurt who was perfect as Stuntman Mike. The entire time he was a bad guy who you just loved to hate. Plus the girls were good too especially at the end.

What he said.

Death Proof (8.5/10)
Planet Terror (7.5/10)

Planet Terror by a mile! There was almost zero tension and even less suspense during the final scenes of Death Proof. There are two cardinal rules of revenge flicks, especially when chicks settle the score. The first rule is that vendettas must be personal. The second rule is there still needs to be some risk that the tables might turn yet again. Tarantino obviously understood both in Kill Bill but ignored them here. Stuntman Mike's second set of potential victims didn't appear to have any connection with Jungle Julie's crew. Not only that, the victors wind up with hardly a scratch between them. In the process, Zoe Bell was given the thrill ride of her dreams. If she'd fallen in love with Stuntman Mike and rode off with him into a sadistic sunset, then maybe breaking the most basic Grindhouse rules would have paid off.

Death Proof, I thought I was going to hate it when Kurt Russell got the table's turned on him (spoiled in the TV spots), but those squealing screams mixed the pure likability and hotness of the girls made it perfection.

Planet Terror just had too many "Why?" moments for me, I loved the full package, but seriously, kids and dogs; off limits, there's no reason why anybody should ever do that, and those scenes were just there to shock, which I don't normally mind, Sayid landing face first in testes was hilarious and gross, cute doggy getting shredded by grill, notsomuch.

Death Proof by far. Great dialogue. Great action. Great characters. All it has is a slow opening but as soon as Stuntman Mike shows up, it jumps into full throttle.

Planet Terror just seemed like standard Rodriguez fare, put in the backdrop of a seventies-style cult horror movie. Not to say it wasn't great fun.

Planet Terror

I wouldn't be surprised, though, if DP surpassed it on multiple DVD viewings in the future.

Death proof without a doubt... I love zombie flicks, but more so for the scary nihilistic view point and not the fun loving zombie killing aspect... So Kurt Russell gets my vote.
