Fraser Returns for The Mummy 3!
Source: Variety April 11, 2007

Variety reports that Brendan Fraser has closed a rich deal to return in The Mummy 3, but Rachel Weisz is not coming back.

Rob Cohen will direct the film, which is expected to begin production late in the summer. It will be set in China and will introduce Jet Li as a villain.

Universal is planning a July 18, 2008 release. The franchise has earned more than $830 million worldwide. The Mummy was released in 1999 and The Mummy Returns in 2001.

Weisz has has dropped out of talks to reprise her role. She has several other projects coming up, including The Brothers Bloom and Phillip Noyce's Outback drama Dirt Music, set to begin shooting in August.

The script is by "Smallville" creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, who will do another pass that will factor in the absence of Weisz. Universal is holding up a greenlight pending a final rewrite, but a late summer start date is still expected.

How did he make room with all those other projects he's working on?

I'm on the fence with this one. I love the first Mummy, but the second one was barely alright.

Well I enjoyed the first one but I LOVED the Mummy Returns.

I'm disappointed about Rachel Weisz but happy that Fraser is back.

Is the third one still going to be about the kid?

This is good news I guess..... I mean I wouldn't want a Mummy movie without him.

If there is no Rachel, there is no "Mummy". Consider me still not interested at all. I want to see the girl of my dreams back on the screen again.

Well, since he won't be returning to Scrubs, I guess there's not much else for him to do. (That I'd care about anyway.)

1) Where did you hear this?
2) Even if it's not this season (6, which has wrapped), how do we know it won't be during the last season, season 7?

What SpikeDurden said. That was a sad moment for me... I really enjoyed his character on the show. I enjoyed it more than anything else he's done. And that was some of John C. McGinley's finest work during that episode. (I mean, he fucking rules overall, but honestly, who didn't feel just as heartbroken looking at Cox's face during the final minutes of that episode?)

I am in the same boat as most of you all. I loved the first one and disliked the second one mostly for the cheesier story and terrible CGI but I do like Alfred Gough and "Smallville" so maybe they can pull this one into something new and exciting. Ah Hell, I'll see it any when....

I did have a tear in my eye for that episode. Very sad! :(

And John C. McGinley is a god! :D

I remember seeing that episode and was floored when the "revelation" came around; I couldn't believe it. It was such a well done episode (as so many of them are), and that episode is one of the main reasons I LOVE the show.

As far as Fraser returning for a third Mummy movie, eh. I didn't think the first one was anything to brag about; haven't seen the second one in its entirety (don't hold your breath either) and it's apparent that the money was the main reason for his involvement. Rachel Weisz has an Oscar now so money isn't a factor in her decisions now since roles (and the dough) will come from all directions.

Not to turn this into a Scrubs discussion, but have you people even seen the show? They could easily bring him back as a figment of Cox imagination. In fact, it's been rumored for a while. He almost appeared in last week's episode, and if you saw it, you know where. I'm not an idiot.

He's been on about two or three episodes so far.
And man, I'd actually hate if they brought him back in that way. It'd take a very, very good reason for him to be suddenly THAT batshit crazy.
Anyway, yeah, I may see this movie. Can't be much worse than The Mummy Returns.

..but really, this is AWESOME news.

We got the main man of the series back, and Jet Li is going to be the Mummy?

It sounds like a comedy, but im so there.

I'm a big fan of both Mummy films (yes, I liked the 2nd one too) but I HATE when past characters are nothing more than honorable mentions...
I'll probably still see it, good Fraiser is back, but it won't be the same!
I wonder if the brother jonathan and what's his name (also in Resident Evil 2 or Dr. Fate on JLA) will be back?

Its almost mind-numbing, isn't it. yet another sequel on top of sequel to sequels. Isn't there any originality anymore. I mean "The Mummy" come-on, the only thing that came out of the Mummy was the Scorpion King and thats saying alot. Another thing, everyone is so happy that Fraser is coming back to this thing, hasn't anyone got it through their heads that this guy is a closet FAG. Now that Rachel Weisz isn't in it, we have no eye candy to deviate our attention from a probably weak cast anyways. Who knows maybe, something good will come out of it. Maybe he will take that pussy-ass, piece of shit he calls a brother-in-law, wraps him in cloth and leaves him in a pyramid, just after he F*cks him in the ass and blows in his face because he is such a homo

Ugh! I just read that they recast the Evelyn character. Since Rachel Weisz turned them down, they have now casted Maria Bello for the role instead.

Now, lord knows I love Maria Bello. She's a great actress and she's hot. But she should be playing a different character dammit! Recasting sucks, usually! And in this case, it definitely does!

Wow. I agree, they should've left the character out of the movie; have Brandon go solo. The more I hear about this movie, the less I like about it. And I thought it was a stupid idea to begin with.

I'm even more upset now with the casting. Maria Bello is beautiful and a great actress but she can't replace Rachel in that role. Rachel made Evelyn in her own image and that will never change. I want to be excited for this movie but I just don't feel it yet.

They should kill off the wife... not like the character is pointless or anything, just saves the trouble for casting someone else to play the character and everyone arguing about it. Like she had cancer or something like that.

I'm so glad. I love this guy and his career is being dragged on the floor like the body of a dead hooker in a horror movie (best simile ever). He hasn't done anything since his half-a-second in "Crash" and those awesome "Scrubs" episodes.

But no Rachel Weisz? FUCK THAT WITH A BARBED WIRE POLE! (the idea, not Rachel; no one dare touch Rachel).

Monkeypeaches is reporting that MICHELLE YEOH is joining the cast of this film...

I honestly don't know what to think of this. Maria Bello is a good addition but I honestly think like most people here that they can't recast that role. Rachel Weisz owned that part and honestly, if she was involved, I'd be a lot more excited...with her passing, I'm kinda more worried than excited about this project, especially with the craptacular Rob Cohen on the case.

I'd much rather see Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh both go off and do something else cause I could see this turning out to be pretty bad...then again, I did enjoy the first Mummy quite a bit...

They would be MUCH better off explaining some reason or another as to why the character isnt in this one then a recast on Weisz. Itll distract me every time the character is on screen.

Is everyone forgetting that this series was never known for it's acting , it's pure unadulterated cheese , on a large scale , so what does it matter if RW comes back or not . Hell , she must think she's too good now with all that Oscar stuff , get over it man , sign on and have some fun , if you could " lower " yourself to play a part in the dreadful Constantine ( now that film was silly ) , why not come back for a third Mummy .

I dint really like the first one , i was going through a blair witch , anti blockbuster , minimalist rebellion at the time , but i gave the second one a chance and i thought it was great . Not sure if i would feel the same way now , but at the time it was terrific entertainment , and RW was one of the reasons for that , but at no time did i feel that she was an indispensable aspect to the films , one or two . She's engaging , talented , funny , and charismatic in this role , but they still could have worked without her .

Just as long as they maintain the same tongue in cheek over the top spirit , without taking anything seriously , at least too seriously , i don't care who replaces her . Trust me , ten minutes into the film , and most people will forget she was even in the first two. I'm starting to forget already .

Rachel Weisz made her character fun and the chemistry she had with Fraser was great. I don't see that happening with Maria Bello and the bad script this film has will not be fun.
