I love Beauty and the Beast but I never found that opening scene to be very good. I mean, nowhere near Lion King obviously but even that aside.
The king of opening scenes:
Mission: Impossible III
Fucking amazing.

It's the whole thing. Find the other parts in the related videos section The sequel's there as well.
Although I really recommend you watch it properly (on DVD or whatever) at one point.

Damn right. The ending gives me twice as much chills (the 'climbing' scene) but both do.
Every single time I watch it.
Which is very often. And you get extra points for your Walter Sullivan avatar.

Holy Shit!!! Thanks for the link...if I had the bucks to order BR online I would, but I don't and I can never find it at the stores I visit...I hate living in South Texas...forign film section in most stores is just kung fu stuff...not even any Kuruasawa (sp?) filcks...
Lion King probably in my top 3 disney flicks...gotta give it up for Beauty And The Beast though...some of the best voice acting I've ever heard, brilliant songs, and great writing...and as far as ending scenes go watching the beast turn human at the end gives me goose bumbs every time....
Other good openings:
Annie Hall
Almost Famous (I love the credits in this flick)
Fight Club
Godfather Pt. 2
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Brazil
thinking about it again, I've gotta give extra props to the Lion King...even bacl at the teaser tralier stage I thought that flick was special...mostly I remember it for the laughs, but it's really touching....the final fight between scar and simba is akin to Vader and Luke for me....and yeah, when simba roars and it rains...pretty phenominal....

Just watched the opening of BR...the smiling girl is pretty terrifying...I thought Takishi Mikke (sp) directed this though...what's Mikke's (sp?) other famous flick besides Audition?

But "Battle Royale" is Kinki Fukasaku's. A better director in my opinion. And omfg "The Lion King" is the fucking shiznit.

The double murder sequence at the beginning of Suspiria would be my choice for the best opening in a horror movie. The stabbing of the still beating heart is especially awesome.

Jaws clearly has the best opening scene of any horror movie. Good call on Halloween too.
So after those, my top 5 would be:
3. Scream
4. Rosemary's Baby (just the music is so creepy)
5. Candyman (maybe...I just couldn't think of another really good opening for a horror movie)
Actually, May has one that immediately grabs you too.
For some reason, I can't remember what the opening scene of Peeping Tom even was, but I seem to remember being struck by it. I haven't watched it in like 3 years though. Anyone care to refresh my memory here?
The opening to When a Stranger Calls deserves mention, I suppose, but I honestly thought the whole urgent police call thing was a bit corny ("We traced the call!"). Scream was essentially an homage to it, but the voice on the other end of the phone being the bearer of the bad news is much more effective.
