God of War: The Movie!
IGN's picks for who should make and star in the game-to-film!
by IGN Staff

With the fantasy-laced historical epic 300 conquering the
box office and God of War II now out in stores, IGN Movies has set its
sights on the live-action, big-screen version of the Sony Playstation
videogame sensation God of War. We'll be suggesting who we think should make and star in the movie, which will be produced by Charles Roven (Batman Begins) and his Mosaic Group shingle for Universal Pictures.

God of War is a bloody story of vengeance, set in an ancient Greece full of mythical beings and deities. The hero of the story is a Spartan warrior named Kratos, who must carry out missions for the gods on Olympus to prevent Ares from destroying the city of Athens. "We've been enthralled by this project since our first time playing the game and realized its narrative had great potential for large-screen production," producer Roven said at the time the deal was struck.

Mosaic and Universal should take the simplest course in bringing God of War to the screen, which is to follow the plot of the games. Don't try to
squeeze both games into a single film; make God of War an epic film
franchise in the vein of Lord of the Rings, with the first film adhering to
the basic narrative of the first game.

Act One would introduce audiences to Kratos, with the first 10 minutes
establishing how the anti-hero was trained as a warrior -- a la Leonidas in 300 -- while his weaker brother was exiled, died and grew up in Hades.

Audiences would also learn that Kratos has a mysterious and absent father, something which could factor more prominently later in the saga (a la Star Wars). The final 20 minutes of Act One would introduce Kratos' wife and child, and establish his fearsome and violent reputation. Act One would end with his fateful battle against the Thracian barbarian army and his bargain
with Ares, god of war.

Sounds like it has potential. I'm really surprised God of War didn't post this... :p

I like how they're approaching it as a story, and not as a videogame. That's a very good sign. I'm sure the immensely successful 300 is what prompted them to release the news and really dig into production.

If they make the movie as action packed as the game (and don't go overboard with the CGI, something I see them inevitably doing, unfortunately) then this should be pretty kickass.

PRINCIPAL CAST

Dominic Purcell as Kratos: One of the stars of the TV series Prison Break, Purcell has been bouncing around feature films for awhile (Blade: Trinity, Primeval). God of War could do for him what 300 did for Gerard Butler, who
had Dracula 2000 and the Tomb Raider sequel to prove to Warners that he could lead their feature. Although he'd have to bulk up even more to play Kratos, Purcell has the right look and feral demeanor for it.

Dominic Purcell (L) and Kratos (R).

Stellan Skarsgård as Ares: If this talented Swedish thesp were CG-augmented then he could make for a wonderfully diabolical god of war. Skarsgård's turn as the brutal Saxon chieftain in King Arthur is all the proof we need that he could nail this role.

Rhona Mitra as Athena: This British actress is currently onscreen in Shooter and also co-stars on the TV series Boston Legal. Her other credits include The Number 23, Nip/Tuck and the TV miniseries retelling of Spartacus. Rhona has the regal bearing and sleek beauty to make Athena (OK, just a statue of her) come to life.

Bill Nighy as Poseidon: Sure, it's a little cheeky to cast Davy Jones as the god of the sea, but he is a wonderful character actor and has the same stony countenance as Poseidon has in the game.

Anthony Hopkins as Zeus: If Clash of the Titans could land Laurence Olivier to play the king of the gods then GoW deserves no less than this
generation's Olivier in the role. Hopkins is the one cast member the studio should splurge on as he would lend gravitas to the film, not unlike how Marlon Brando did in 1978's Superman.

Natassia Malthe as Aphrodite: This exotic beauty hasn't exactly appeared in many classics (D.O.A., Elektra and the forthcoming BloodRayne II: Deliverance), but she's enigmatic and alluring enough to make for a captivating goddess of love and beauty.

I'm just curious why Sony doesn't own the rights to this...

I agree, I have posted elsewhere my opinion about "The Rock". That will be the worst. I believe their going the route similiar to "300". Lower budget with good actors but not blockbuster actors. Definite money maker.

i'm pretty sure this just a make beleive article that IGN staff wrote. Its not confirming a god of war movie, just simply saying if they made one this is who should star and how the movie should be played out. THey did the same think with Zelda and a few other games.

Great game! And if done right, it could be a great flick. I'm really anxious to see how this comes out and what angle they take with it.

This movie WILL suck. It will not do the gaming franchise any justice. And I.G.N's pick for the cast is all just speculation. David Jaffe the original creator of God of War has apparently approved a script for the movie. Now the studio's are pissing him off. IMDB is not 100% confirmed on all details yet. And it does not involve any of the above mentioned actors/actresses. However, Djimon Housou was heavily rumoured to play Kratos, yeah right. Great actor, but the lead has to go to a white man. Even though in the games he is voiced by a black man by the name of T C Carson.

I am an uber-freak of these games. But if they are going to fuck up the movie and the story, I will hate them forever. it would then tarnish the series. I'd rather it was never made. One only has to look at other games to movies. Most all of them suck. Most.... God of War is so grand and epic and massive in its scope that it would cost an absolute fortune to make it. More than any other epic IMHO. More than Gladiator, Troy, Braveheart, Kingdom of Heaven, and yes, even "300." The story of the Ghost of Sparta is amazing in all its complexity and all its grandeur. I fear the worst at the outcome. I must be critical and negative towards this project. It's my favourite game of altime ever!

THE GENERAL WHO BECAME A GOD

Why would it have to go to a white man? I

Because in the story, Kratos is a white man. It would be like casting Louis Gosset jnr to play Gandalf. Rest assured, I have nothing against black actors. Infact, some of them are among my my favs. But as I stated above. Kratos was white in the story. Then made even more white when the Gods cursed him forever by placing the ashes of his dead family over his entire body. Making him white [in another sense]. Hence, he was commonly referred to as "The Ghost of Sparta"

:)

I guess we have something in common then. :)

But no really, IMHO, they should just really leave GoW alone. The games were fantastic on their own rights, and I think making movies out of them could potentially be disastrous.

Kratos is a whole different kind of white though... His skin is like the dude from powder so obviously anyone who does the character will be painted for the role. Djimon Housou would probably be pretty amazing in the part. Better than Diesel, The Rock, or that guy from prison break.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there weren't any blacks in Sparta. Not to say this movie would be grounded in historical accuracy.

Aside from being black, and having a ridiculously thick African accent (I don't think he'll ever be able to shake that, nor has he even attempted to at this point) Djimon Hounsou would own the part. As far as acting ability, build, and intensity go, he's leagues ahead of anyone else considered for the part.

It'll probably be the fucking Rock.

Or maybe they could paint Djimon white, and have T.C Carson voice over and maybe....

ah crap, I maintain that an adaptation of this great game will blow.

I wholeheartedly agree on Djimon Housou, but he is not white. I want at least some authenticity here. Even though the games are all fictional. A black man will be recognised under almost any amount of makeup. Remember that Kratos was only colored white after he slayed both his wife and daughter when his quest for total domination was his only goal. And before his accension to Olympus after Athena offered him the role as the new God of War. The village Oracle said that this will be a reminder of the terrible deeds that you have done. This of course pleased Ares to no end. Without Kratos's family alive, the Spartan General would have no ties or loyalties to hinder his conquest of the world. So when he has normal colored skin, he has to be a white actor, IMHO. The other actors you mentioned, I would not want to see any of them in the lead role of Kratos.

So he was not the powdery color white all of the time.

I would shudder if they cast him. Look what happened with Conan 3? They had the Rock cast as the son of Conan, the REAL Conan. What a fucking joke if you ask me. No wonder Milius could never get the project past the casting stage. But that wasn't the reason. I would like to see Dominic Purcell maybe, but this is a tough part to cast. Kratos is built like a brick shithouse. I think this guy, Jones has the look, but thats where it ends. In the games, Kratos is like 6' 3" tall, so Jones is amply large enough, and he can swing a sword and hold a shield. In the case of God of War, he could easily handle the Blades of Athena, Artemis' Sword, The Blade of Olympus [used by zeus] to turn the tide in the great war against the mighty Titans. See, that's another thing. The war of the Gods vs the Titans. I tell ya, this movie will be great or it will be shit. As for black Spartans, there was none.

I agree, but I still have hopes. I need to see more on the project. It's still way too early days yet. We will have to contend with Diese'ls Hannibal. I think that's the next big historical epic. I tell ya, God of War the movie has the potential to be really really spectacular! I love the story. In a way, Kratos is a tragic character much like Vader. They both can't escape themselves and what they are. And it's that aspect of Kratos that I would love to see fully explored in the movie.

I suspect that this project will wind up just like Halo, and stuck in development hell.

Physique? Check. Look? Check. Acting chops? Nada.

He was pummelled by Jet Li (Fearless), stabbed by Brad Pitt (Troy) and (potentially) beaten up in The Condemned (Correct me if I'm wrong, haven't actually seen the film) ? Not an impressive CV if you wanna be the freakin' God Of War.. :p
