Okay, I don't see what the big deal is. The detractors are saying things that are ridiculous, it reminds me of people saying gay marriage will lead to men marrying sheep.
The problem is that currently the ape is viewed as property. Creditors could take possession of the ape, and sell him to whomever they wanted in order to reclaim their losses. This is not exactly mentioned in an article with a title that totally misstates the outcome the activists are looking for. I don't get how this can be viewed as a big problem.
"I'm not about to make myself look like a fool" by getting involved, said Antolini, who worries that chimpanzees could gain broader rights, such as copyright protections on their photographs."
WHAT???? How the fuck is a chimp going to consult a copyright lawyer?

The fact is that an animal is not a person. They need to deal with that.
Some animals just should not live in captivity. Period. Primates may not be people, but they sure as hell are abused a lot.
Activists want to ensure the apes don't wind up homeless if the shelter closes. Both have already suffered: They were captured as babies in Sierra Leone in 1982 and smuggled in a crate to Austria for use in pharmaceutical experiments.
This is no way to treat any animal.

I’m sure all of that is possible without having to officially declare the chimp a person, jeo.
it just seems more politically motivated than anything else.

Declare a chimp a person? Before we know it...dangerous territory!!!

How is this politically motivated?
It is easier for them to make one more questionable law than to change dozens of other laws that are flat-out wrong.
The fact is that an animal is not a person. They need to deal with that.
Well, at least you learned *something* from pro-choicers. Because, yeah - being human is the only thing that should grant a being the right the life.
For the record, I don't believe animals should have rights like humans per se, but the abuse needs to stop. These animals belong in their own habitat, safe from the illegal pet trade, lab experiments, or poaching.

Yeah, neither do I, but even if they are made one by law, it isn't like anyone's going to say, "Oh, chimps are human! I should invite one to go square dancing."
The negative effects of this law, so far, seem to be zilch. However, the positive effects are pretty good.
If someone shows me how it would be really bad, or they come up with a better way to... yeah, this is a silly topic.... if they can come up with a better way to help the chimps out, I'd be all for opposing this law. Otherwise, I say let the damn dirty apes have their human rights. And while we are at it, we should give them drivers licenses, and let them vote and run for office - oh, and I wonder if this law would scare Creationists.
