Well, it's no secret that Martin Scorsese seems to be a fan of The Rolling Stones, as their music appears in many of his films, from as early as Mean Streets to his most recent Oscar winner, The Departed. A song I really like that he uses quite a bit is "Gimme Shelter" which appeared in Goodfellas, Casino, and The Departed.
So my question for the poll is this: which do you think is the most effective and/or best use of the song out of the films?
-In Goodfellas, it appears once Henry gets into dealing cocaine.
-In Casino, it appears when Tommy begins to get sloppy, and can't even knock a guy out with one punch anymore. (A different, live version of the song is used)
-In The Departed, it appears right at the very beginning and later on when Collin Sullivan moves in with his girlfriend.
Even though I think "I'm Shipping Off To Boston" is more of the signature song for the film , I liked its use of the song in The Departed best. I thought it was so exciting and sinister to hear it at the beginning, and it gives off a great energy entering the film. What's interesting is that in Goodfellas and Casino, the song enters once things start to go bad...in each movie a little further than halfway through..but in The Departed, it appears RIGHT AWAY...so yeah, I guess that shows how unhappy of a movie it actually is....there aren't really any "good times" that the characters experience before any downfall. So I think it has the strongest presence in The Departed. I rank Goodfellas as second best, and Casino third.
