At least 98% of the time, this site. The other 2% would be teachers or friends at school.

Since I never really read music related magazines and periodicals, or really look online, this site is my basis for any new and old music that I might end up liking.

I discover a lot of great bands from "Best Of" lists. Plus, my friends will introduce me to a band every now and then that kicks ass.

word of mouth networking and sometimes just plain old fashioned hunting the internet for random stuff.

My brother is a music freak. So I just bum off him and rip stuff to my computer. I usually go off word of mouth though.

Websites: Pitchfork/Popmatters/Stylus, friends (from a music community I frequent), last.fm (clicking 'similar artists' on some bands I like), record labels (checking artists in a label if I like something else from the label), soulseek (I search for an album that's slightly obscure, then look at who has it, then look at what other things they have, and pick something from there).

If you download torrents, go to a torrent site and search for "ADVANCE" or "2007" under the indie subcategory or just in general. You will find a lot of great stuff out there.

Honestly? I just listen to a lot of music. I take on board recommendation from people I trust. I also check out a lot of stuff on Myspace. I download a lot (for shame). I read Uncut Magazine and it has nudged me in the direction of more great albums than I could list. I check out most of the albums that Pitchfork raves about (with variable success). I have a voracious appetite for new sounds. The only downside is that I have so much great music that I don't really find the time to really LISTEN to anything. I used to listen to albums for months on end. These days it has to be something particularly stunning to warrant my devoting months of my time. A great new album enters my radar every two or three days.

I've been noticing the same problem with myself. It's hard to devote alot of time to just one album nowdays. I honestly think that the internet has really evolved into a monstrous wealth of information about bands and because of it the market is flooded with quality music due to smaller bands being able to survive longer now that they can actually find an audience rather then fade away because they can't find a way to get their music out.

Mostly reading books and internet stuff. Lots of reccomendations from people on music forums I frequent, as well. Then some stuff from friends. I sample a lot of stuff on iTunes, based on what I've learned from the aforementioned sources, and decide what I'm gonna go out and buy (hard copies, none of that mp3 tripe for me).

This is bullshit, I know that you hide around small scotish towns in dark robes and pounce out on people and steal there ipods and upload them onto your pc, and after that you disrobe and go off to a fishermans bar to savor the local sea shanties.

I find out about music in a few ways...through other people, concerts/shows, from movies/tv, from ads on tv and the internet, and related searches on itunes and amazon help a lot.

They try and shove a lot of pop and mainstream down your throat, but the wonderful thing is that you can listen to pretty much any song ever made.
I usually type in a band that I love, and then they give you a list of bands that you might like. I love The White Stripes, so I typed in their name and they recommended Soundgarden, Audioslave, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc.
However, by far the best part is that you can listen to the songs. (Either the whole thing or about 30 seconds worth)

Additionally, I'm a lush for blind buying or downloading things I've never heard of. I just like hearing new stuff, good or bad.
One thing I like to do with downloads is search people's shared libraries. I've come across some pretty cool stuff, just based off the person liking one of the same songs I do.
But really - Yeah, these boards have been great for me. When I first started here, I knew a helluva lot more and was a lot more up to date than I've become after parenthood, but I plan to get it back one day. I'm not losing my edge. :D
But the schmoes here have really turned me onto some great things. I miss the PMs I used to get from some of you about things you think would excite me. Come on, guys - I know I'm not as hip as I should be, but your recommendations (Go! Team, Hope of the States among dozens) have helped me be that much more. :D
