View Full Version : The Ultimate JoBlo.com "Greatest Band Of All Time" Tournament

Ok, something I've wanted to do but kind of forgot about until someguy started his tournament. Basically, each person gets to nominate twenty bands at MOST. If you nominate more, then I'll only count the first ones mentioned. I'll use a number generator to match up the different ones. Pretty standard and typical tournament rules. A minimum of 8 total votes per set after the first round. First round sets are limited to five votes. Five matches per set. For each match, you have only one vote.
Note: they actually have to be a musical group that plays instruments. A rap group like N.W.A. or Wu-Tang Clan doesn't count, but The Roots would.

No bands that don't play instruments? Public Enemy is easily one of the greatest/most influential rap groups of all-time, and it's a shame they're being forced out of this tournament before it even starts. Also, no Leonard Cohen, Elliott Smith, Nick Cave, Cat Power, and a billion others?
This really needs to be a Greatest Musical Artists of All Time tourney, if you ask me, because this is hardly "Ultimate".

There's a difference between "artists" and bands. I asked the schmoes if they liked the idea and they all agreed. Don't fucking shit all over it before it even starts. Some people might actually like the idea so don't go making a lot of noise and fuck it up for everyone else.

sounds like a fine idea for a tournament, but why the omition of bands such as
Dave Matthews Band
or Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble (??!!?)
or Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
or Bob Seger
c'mon now, those are classic groups!
Maybe i just don't get the point you're trying to make by omitting these types of groups.

I highly doubt my expressing my opinion on your tournament idea will affect the outcome of those participating. If they like it, great, I'm not going to be offended. I had a thought (that you're missing the opportunity to host the "Ultimate" tournament), put it out there, and you're being entirely too sensitive.
But hey, when you do the "Ultimate Tournament For Artists That Don't Play Their Instruments But Are Still Wolds Better Than Dire Straits", then drop me a pm.

I'm not trying to make a point, but they reflect the work of one artist more than the rest of the group.

So? It's just irritating to see other schmoes tell me that they love the idea and the first post I see is someone bitching about how it's no good because it's not a tournament for all music artists even though the fucking title itself implies that it's a BAND tourney. It would be like me going to your Rolling Stone tourney and just saying shit like "Oh what a horrible fucking tournament because the list doesn't include ________." I'm not trying to be a jerkoff but it is a tad irritating.

Well, I disagree with your analogy, but I'll let it go. I don't mean to rain on your parade, just wanted to get my thoughts out there. Besides, I didn't call it a horrible idea. In fact, I'm sure I'll end up voting in it. :)

Well, what about say for example Dire Straits....a great band but you've gotta be kidding me if you say that any of the other members compare to Mark Knopfler on his own.
or w/ Dave Matthews Band - Dave is good but w/o the rest of the ensemble, there's no way he'd be as popular as he is today.
I guess maybe my complaint would be that its too hard to discern what is a GROUP and what would be just "a group that has a main standout person"

The rest of Dire Straits may not have compared to Knopfler in terms of talent but they all had their input in the way the band ran things. Besides, that's not the argument really. Springsteen & the E-Street Band was Springsteen's personal project, he just decided to give recognition to the rest of his band. Same with Dave Matthews, Captain Beefheart, or any other artists of that nature.
But if you really have a problem with this then I guess I'll open the tourney to those groups. All other rules are intact, though.
And Bob Seger isn't a band. Sorry ;)

Well its your competition, so you've got the right to administer as you wish, I was just putting in my two sense and wondering a couple things
ah yes, i meant to add "& the silver bullet band" to Seger's name.
I'll list some bands and if you think they don't fit then just go ahead and reply and let me know which ones don't count.

I'm strongly against the concept behind this tournament, but as others have said, it's your tournament, so I'm not going to argue against it. However, to say that the non-Reznor members of NINE INCH NAILS contribute more than the members of the E Street Band or Dave Matthews Band (I'm not even a fan of the latter) is fucking bullshit. Just because a band is named after one person, doesn't mean that that person controls the entire output. In many cases, members of bands that aren't named after a certain person have far less output than the members of bands that are. Once again, not trying to shit on the concept, I'm just saying that if you want to go with the concept I think you should rethink the basis on which you allow bands to be nominated. Clarence Clemons and Little Steven have contributed far more than the anonymous filler musicians in My Bloody Valentine and Weezer.
Also, it's a shame that more jazz doesn't get listened to around here, because ANY jazz group literally personifies what you're going for here. Albeit, it would be extremely difficult, since it's rare that you can pinpoint a jazz group that didn't change lineups in a matter of months, which is really the beauty of the art form, but yada yada yada, bottom line is as much as I'd like it to be so, including jazz just wouldn't work here. Anyway, my list, keeping it to rock:
Pink Floyd
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
Sonic Youth
Can
The Roots
The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
The Grateful Dead
The Fall
The Clash
The Pixies
Joy Division
The Ramones
Radiohead
The Beach Boys (not quite sure if they didn't just hinge on Brian Wilson, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt)
The Velvet Underground
Arcade Fire
The Minutemen
Led Zeppelin
That ended up kind of a random assembly of bands I really like, I'm not good at narrowing things like that down, especially with certain...restrictions. ;)

A. You never said you couldn't vote for jazz groups, unless I missed something.
B. I never claimed you said so, either. Part of my point (which, looking back, I didn't really communicate) was that not many people around here listen to jazz anyway, so to nominate some groups would be a bit pointless.
C. I'm sorry you feel the need to stop the tournament, and sorry to everyone else, since I seem to be the straw that broke the camel's back. However, it just didn't make sense that you could vote for NIN, which is a project controlled by Trent Reznor in every single way but the name, but not the E Street Band, who were a functional unit with highly visible members. To make you stop the tournament was not at all my intent, and if you want to just ignore my suggestion and keep it going as you had planned, go ahead.

I think you should keep w/ the tournament....I like the idea of adding bands like Springsteen & Dave matthews band but I also agree with omitting those of the likes of Elliott Smith, Fiona Apple, Sufjan Stevens etc. (even though Smith and Apple happen to be fav's of mine) because I get what you're trying to do.
Keep doing it. That's my two cents.

I understand why people are confused, but this is a tournament for bands. There are different kinds of bands, but it's a band tournament nonetheless. I was just saying if so many people have a problem with it then why bother?

I just noticed that my nomination of the upsetters has not been put on the top list and infact i see no other mention of any bands of nonwhite people, infact I'd have at least someone to say badbrains or tv on the radio, or even

sam and dave,
sly and the family stone,
earth wind and fire

From the list above, i would definately say that
Bad Brains
TV on the Radio
Booker T & the MGs
Sly & the Family Stone
Earth Wind & Fire
War
Bob Marley
are all definately worthy.
The R&B bands mentioned however (The Supremes, Four Tops etc.) are not really bands....they are talented singers backed up by house bands, so I wouldn't think they are included.
Not mentioned: Living Colour & The Roots (if they havent been mentioned yet) could also be added.
Brando @$$ Fat

Ok, I wanted to have like 500 bands initially and since we're far away from that quota, I've decided add some bands myself. I'm going to be as objective as possible and will get most of them from "greatest bands" lists. Also, I think we do need some more blues and non-white bands. Sly & the Family Stone especially.
Brando @$$ Fat
05-16-2007, 09:11 PM
500 seems like too much, I think 400 seems appropriate for a tournament like this. I've looked at a bunch of artists not on this list, many of them are bands I do not like (blink 182 especially) but since they have received acclaim over the years I put them here anyway. Here is the complete list:
…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead

Abba
AC/DC
The Adicts
Adolescents
Aerosmith
Afghan Whigs
Agent Orange

I'm more worried that fucking No Doubt is going to beat Crass. People, actually listen to Crass, then listen to that phony artificial No Doubt shit and then come up with an answer.
Oh, and Sly blows Gorillaz out of the fucking water.

The vote was completely random. I put the numbers of each one into a number generator and that's how it came up. What sucks is there are going to be some big bands going up against each other.

Haha, no, I wouldn't put Fall Out Boy in here. Nominations came up short, so I went looking for bands that were either critically acclaimed or necessary for the list. I had to put a lot of bands on there I didn't like (Blink-182, namely).
