View Full Version : NINJAS!

Cinema history has seen scores of serious, well-to-do Samurai films, ranging from the classic (arguably) black and white fable Seven Samurai to the modern day epic Tom Cruise vehicle The Last Samurai, and everything in between.
But where, praytell, is our competent Ninja movie? I'm not sure what it is about the art of Ninjitsu that attracts such low budget fare, but as far as I know there hasn't been a single "serious" production involving Ninjas since the first fucking lense was invented. As such, Ninjas have become something of a running joke, incompetent filmmakers choosing to center cheesey third rate action montages around a ludicrous story.
Just fucking once, I'd like to see a thoughtful, competent approach to the ancient art, because it certainly deserves just as much respect as Bushido, and I'm sick of seeing it pissed on.
I WANT A GOOD NINJA MOVIE!!!

Check out !Ninja Wars! it's by far the best ninja flick i've ever seen.. But the big problem is they don't show enough of the ninja's which was disapointing, but it's still good..
But ya, I've been searching for a really good ninja flick since i was born.. They always let me down so much..

Yes, there is, dude. All I can say is, just watch it if you can get a hold of it. I enjoyed it very much. But I still prefer the original. Im not good at breaking down movies, but I will say that it has some equally interesting and gruesome fights in the sequel. Azumi is just too cute and way too lethal for her own good.
Can't find a pic of Azumi 2, sorry.

Okay, we get it, there are a lot of bad movies out there loosely or closely affiliated with Ninjas. I made this abundantly clear in my OP, and there's no need for further emphasis.

You know you like it, and as an added bonus it stars George "Sulu" Takei as Sensi Hiroshi.
On a side note (and a little more serious); I have heard rumors of Shi being slated for a late 2007 release. Though not a ninja (yamabushi warrior specifically) it has some potential for near naked sneakiness from who ever gets tagged to take on the role.

Alright, now, would you consider that a "serious" ninja movie, were it made into a movie?
Granted, the game was fucking trippy as hell and balls to the wall crazy, but when I say serious I mean as in a just entry into a more or less not (well) done subject matter?

I'd be down for a film in the spirit of Ninja Gaiden, whereas a Ninja with near supernatural (I'd ditch the use of magic for a movie treatment) skill battles everything under the sun in increasingly violent ways, but if history has taught us anything, it's that a straight video game to movie adaptation can and will suck mass quantities of metaphorical sack.
When I say serious Ninja movie, I mean a movie without gimmick or demographic that is more or less "historically accurate" (I say this very loosely). As in, a movie set in feudal Japan that deals as much with badass Ninja combat as it does with ancient loyalty and the Ninjutsu order. Is that too much to ask? Perhaps I'm aiming a bit high.

To be honest I give a lot of thought to video game adaptations. It is a wide open field that can, if pioneered by good directors, churn out movies as good as book-to-film adaptation. The thing is that there are two parts to any game - the repetitive bullshit action that you do over and over - and a fucking excellent (in the ones worth adapting) story. Now, sadly, people focus on the repetitive action for the entire movie. Most of the time, in fact, they ditch the original story and write their own based off the world. Big mistake. But that will be the last paragraph on that subject, hell I'll go start a thread for that specific purpose.
As far as making a serious ninja movie, in the sense you're talking about, was what I meant earlier. So we've defined "serious" as at most the ridiculous level of Tom Cruise as the last samurai. I'm gonna make a little assumption here and say, unfortunately for our asses ninja things weren't nearly as well documented as samurai exploits.

Oh no, you got me all wrong. I'm not saying video games aren't worthy of adapting, I'm saying with what we've seen, Vegas odds would be against a studio pumping out anything decent. Saying video games aren't worthing of adapting is as ludicrous as saying comic books aren't worthy of adapting. People seem to forget that they're all essentially just stories, and whether a story is good or not relies more on the storyteller, and less on the actual story.
And yes, a Last Samurai-esque Ninja movie, in scope and approach, would be ideal for me. I'm not sure what you were getting at, but I for one fucking love that film.

I enjoy the hell out of it to, but I am the first to admit it was fucking ridiculous in many ways. Still realistic enough, in a way, to enjoy it. But I meant that a Ninja movie couldn't be any less realistic. That Last Samurai was about the most I would take before it got silly.

It's too bad they never kept records of any of the shit Ninja did, in Japan it was considered dishonorable to use Ninja or train them or whatever.. Just like every country has spies and are involved in espionage, that type of shit will never be made public or be in the history books..

Very true, but you can still find a fairly consistent history of Ninja through Japanese folklore and stuff. Ninja are also fairly integral to Samurai history.
The life of perhaps the most famous Ninja, Hattori Hanzo (the name should sound familiar) is also fairly well documented.

Great idea for a thread here, I concur wholeheartedly with the idea of a serious Ninja flick. Batman Begins touched lightly on some of the ideas of the Ninja, but it would be nice to see a film that focused just on Ninjitsu.

Shogun Assassin is the american edit of Lone Wolf & Cub movies, but it's not a ninja movie. Not to mention it's an edit of just the first two films, not all 6. It's a smurai saga - an awesome one. There are ninjas only in few scenes, and since its Shogun assassin, you must be talking about the scene in the forest.

I don't know...surely you can understand me being a little aprehensive about John Woo making a 'serious' ninja flick. Especially one to coincide with a video game release.
The plot isn't exactly traditional ninja either. It's more an allegory for modern special forces.
Has anyone seen the film "Shaolin Challenges Ninja"? I hear it's awesome.
