Niiiiiiiice. I'd say they should do a full album of it, but I'm still wary of Robert Johnson cover albums after that string of Clapton tripe.

It comes from a whole tribute to Johnson various artists album.

After listening to all of it, I have to say it's up there in the tribute albums that don't horribly suck ass category. i don't know half the bands on it but they all do a great job. I just threw down 35 bucks to have an offical copy airmailed to me from Japan, it's that good

I initially thought Boris Johnson had released a record and got overexcited...anyways, I'll give this a whirl after work this evening...sounds very interesting.

It's off a japanese compilation tribute album. The only place I could find the album to buy was at amazon.com japan. The comp is titled Up jumped the devil.

I love it. I'm glad Robert Johnson is starting to see more fame even after death. I guess he's the oldest member of the Nick Drake/Elliott Smith/Daniel Johnston (soon, anyway)/Hank Williams Club.

Not to say that they aren't good (great, even), but I wouldn't put Drake, Smith, or Johnston anywhere near the level of Robert Johnson and Hank Williams. And I would say Robert Johnson has had about the same level of "fame" that he's had for the past 40 or so years.

I think Drake could qualify up in those ranks but I agree about the rest. They are fantastic but not Robert Johnson level tastic.

I wasn't saying talentwise (although I would put Drake in there with Johnson and Williams) but they definitely were more famous in death. And when I mean famous, I don't mean playing a song at the Oscars and then being totally forgotten about.

Yeah, that would make sense, and not just being more famous after death, but also being really haunted sorts of individuals in life. So yeah, good point. However, I still disagree with you and Bowie over ranking Drake with Johnson and Williams, if not for quality of music than just because he isn't nearly as influential. But, agree to disagree, I guess it comes down to.

Drake is immensely influential. Most modern low key folk is branched off of him. Belle and Sebastian, Elliot Smith are just two major examples of bands he has influenced. Sure Drake hasn't impacted alot of the music that we hear on the radio but if you look deeper he influenced a huge cross section of musicians today.

Yes, but Robert Johnson and Hank Williams have influenced (either directly or indirectly) just about every blues and country, respectively (although Johnson influenced a ton of country musicians, and vice versa with Williams), musician/band to come after them. On top of that, both have influenced an uncountable number of rock and folk artists, as well. If you wanted to list the major acts who fall under their sphere of influence, you could go on for pages. So while Drake has a large amount of influence, he doesn't measure up to those two.

But your argument came into play when I lumped Drake in with Williams and Johnson. R.E.M. is considered to be the pioneering alternative rock band, and Drake had a huge influence on them. Considering all of the bands R.E.M. alone influenced, let alone set the stage for, then Drake deserves some credit.

Drake is sort of a musical phenomenon when you think about it. In life, none of his records sold over five thousand units, but ten years after his death he became a rock star.....yet there's no real explanation as to why.
