I don't like their music that much but I know a lot of people with excellent taste who love them, so I'll acknowledge that they weren't untalented.

I enjoy Sublime's hits on the radio.... I bought their self-titled CD and it's pretty damn good, most all the songs're listenable, and not much filler from what I remember.... It's been forever since I've heard it though, and it's unfortunate lead singer Brad Nowell was an addict.

I love Sublime. Always have, probably always will. Just one of the most fun and easy-to-listen-to bands there is. Incredibly likable music.

Not a bad band by any stretch of the imagination, very influential, very creative, but in my opinion very very overrated especially by the generation I'm in (aged 20-25 or so). Many consider them one of the best bands of all time. I don't see how that's possible with such a small catalogue of songs....and that goes for any band that has only 1 or two albums to their credit.

You know, they are one of those bands that you shouldn't play their cds to your parents. I played Date Rape to my mom and she was pissed at me for it, I explained that there was good karma in the end, but she still yelled at me for loving a song called "Date Rape"
I still love them. I don't think they are the greatest band in the universe, but they have some great summer jams to listen to while you are cruising the highway. Stand By Your Van is one of the best live cds I've heard. Damn shame about Brad.

Same here. In fact, I'm considering getting into a few albums in due course. However, they're overrated by people just because the singer fucking OD'd.

If some guys with names like Jagger and Richards hadn't thought that this guy's 20 or so known (at the time) recordings made him one of the best musicians of all time, rock and roll would've been a very different beast indeed.
Anyway, Sublime - I like them as a good radio band. They have a good number of songs that I'll definitely listen to if they come on the radio, but I've never really felt any need to go further than that. Maybe if they had more songs like Summertime, which I absolutely love and think stands on an entirely higher level above the rest of their stuff, I'd look deeper into their music.

Well by no means am I discrediting Robert Johnson by saying what I said - I've got his complete collection....he is THE most influential artist on rock of all time in my opinion, and in the top 5 at least in most other peoples' opinions.
But I think there's a difference between influential artists and all-time greats. Not that you can't be both - obviously (ex. Beatles)
The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Cream, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath etc. etc. are all time greats.
The sin comes in where many people in the 20-25 year old crowd (especially stoners and people in this age group with relatively awful musical taste overall...we're talkin' people who also love Nickelback and Hinder here....think they are better than those aforementioned bands) That's where my personal logic comes from.

With songs like Smoke Two Joints, Date Rape, Garden Grove, and my personal favorite Pawn Shop, it isn't hard to enjoy a little Sublime every now and then for me.

Sublime is the gateway band to other ska/punk/reggae artists of the era... Many people don’t like their radio friendly sound (and that’s assuming they like this style of music), which is fine, it did birth a plethora of generic shit ska-punk bands we’d almost certainly be better off without. Bands like No Doubt and Mighty-Mighty-Boss-Tones, which then led to pop-punk bands like Blink-182, which then led to shit like Simple Plan and so on and so forth... but they were the first of their kind, so to speak. So my hats off to em’.
People tend to overrate them a bit too much though. They deserve respect for trying something different, at the very least.

I've only heard two or three songs, but I liked what I heard.

I know what you're sayin. Its usually sorority girls that I know that think that Sublime is on par with the Beatles or Jimi Hendrix.
I actually dislike a number of their radio hits (What I Got is so damn overplayed as is Wrong Way). I do like Pawn Shop, Jailhouse, Paddle Out, Get Ready. And I will listen to all of Santeria if its on the radio. Damn thats a catchy song.
Their popularity definitely capitalized off of Nowell's death. It definitely made him more "iconic" to this generation. I see so many college students with the "Nowell: Crazy Fool" poster on their walls.

I like richard chese version of smoke to joints, but there the kind of band I'd expect to hear on a keven smith sountrack, which is never a good indication

i love most of there stuff that is constantly played on the radio day in and day out. for instinse: what ive got, santeria, caress me down, there all songs that i dont really like. there all way to over played and are kinda annoying. However, Paddle out, jailhouse, all you need, april 29 1992(miami), same in the end, all amazing songs. so on the whole of things, yes i would say that they are amazing. but there song are very over played and theres a point that i heard a song way too many times.

I think they're an okay, catchy kinda band but fi they stayed around, they definitely would've fizzled. The leader's death made them way over-immortalized to my generation and I don't think they would've been if he was alive. I like some of their songs but many are overrated

I don't understand why Sublime is deified by "cool" people from my generation. Maybe it's just because of Brad's death. I don't know. In my opinion, they're ridiculously overrated. Nothing special. At all.

I just bought 40 oz to freedom, and I love it. I plan on getting they're self titled, plus at work we sell they're box set, and I can get it for pretty cheap.

40 oz. to Freedom is indeed the shit. And Sublime is timeless. The ultimate chilling music.

I think Sublime had talent. not my cup of tea but they definetely were good at doing what they did but I couldn't listen to them for years just due to the fact of them being played out by every bro with a tribal tatt. and a lifted truck around here.

amen.
Sublime are alright, I guess. I don't have any of their albums (and I don't smoke weed), but I can definitely see how they got so cult.
