I don't think the jet scene is showing supernatural skills from McClane. If you think about it, the ONLY extravagant thing he does physically is the moment when he jumps off from the plane to the freeway, but the freeway is in an almost vertical angle. So he just SLIDES it down, he doesn't fall against it.

It's something that could be done for real without breaking anything. Hell, maybe someone actually did do it for real, since this was a very stunt-heavy movie. Sure, the stuntman would have plenty of safety gear and there would be a soft landing at the bottom of the vertical freeway, but still.

The overall staging of the scene is of course very operatic and over the top, but the physical actions McClane does aren't THAT unrealistic.

The scene was proposterous, the cunning ability to leap from a spiraling jet and slide down a piece of road while said jet explodes behind you is beyond ridiculous. The superhero comment was a bit of a hyperbole, but the fact that he continues pressing on with ease after this is where he displays superhuman abilities. I'm sure Superman was green with envy after watching that. I can accept some pretty outrageous things in action movies, but this scene completely removed me from the film. It was just a vain attempt to showcase the films large budget and special effects. If you choose to enjoy this scene because it's over the top and operatic well that is perfectly fine with me... just don't try to pass this shit off as believable.

I think the jet scene is pretty badass myself.

I personally loved it. The PG-13 rating really didn't bother me as much as I thought. The violence was violent enough, but the language could've been stronger. The action sequences were excellent, Willis kicked ass as usual and Justin Long was likable/funny. I also liked the villain this time around. He's no Hans, but he worked. Can't wait for the DVD.

A fun movie, but it could've been better I guess.

As much as I love this movie I have to say, the John McClane in both this movie AND With a Vengeance is a different John McClane from the first two.

The John McClane in the first two was more relateable. He was more human. He was more vulnerable. It's like when McClane lost Holly and started to lose his hair, he was not really the same McClane.

Still love the movie though. This along with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End remain the best action movies of the summer. Or at least until The Bourne Ultimatum comes out.

If I lost my wife and my hair, I wouldn't be the same either, lol. :D

I think I understand you . . . a little anyway. Sure he's different throughout the movies. By the third and fourth, he's been through the same shit a few times. In the first, he's more relateable because he was new to the whole fighting terrorists and what not. The second was about the same because it was basically "How can the same thing happen to the same guy twice?" He's an older John McClane now, but still fun to watch and root for.

Tukka already explained the practical physics of the Harrier scene, but if you want actual proof you needn't look any further than the cast. I seriously suggest you study up on Cyril Raffaelli. He's like Tony Jaa, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li all rolled into one. That guy is fucking phenomenal.

The problem I had with that scene was the freeway collapsing in on itself and then John driving up the obviously unstable piece of road with a huge semi. Especially since everything else had been relatively grounded up until that scene.

Actually, I was a little disappointed with it in general. I love the idea of the Harrier fucking shit up, but I think there should have been some more dynamics added to the scene, like McClane juggling multiple foes while dodging the jet. Like, for instance, Olyphant calls in the Harrier while his henchmen are in pursuit with a ridiculous arsenal of weaponry (RPGs and the like) and the Harrier just starts firing on everyone once the rockets start flying. That would have kicked A LOT more ass.

Wiseman kind of dropped the ball with that scene.

The 4th outing of Die Hard was good but would have been AWESOME if it was "R" IMO..........

I was wondering the big WHY.........

Why is Timothy Olyphant was wreaking havoc as seen in the film...
My question was finally answered in the middle of the movie.
#4 had some funny onliners and kick em action scenes.....

Would have loooooooooved to have seen Bonnie Bedelia making a cameo..........

I've now seen all four Die Hard movies on the big screen starting with the original when I was 10.
I liked this one a lot, tons of action and good one liners from Bruce. My friend said the car taking out the helicopter was the most ridiculous thing he'd ever seen but I told him he must have missed the fire hydrant water knocking someone out of a helicopter. but that's the type of movie it was, and I loved it.

I watched it a second time. Liked it even more! Kinda feeling lazy right now so I don't want to go into details but all the things that bothered me the first time doesn't bother me anymore.

And as sad as it is, I've read EVERY SINGLE POST IN THIS THREAD. Don't ask me why. Don't ask me how. For some reason this thread keeps me interested.

During the beginning credits of the flick...it says the film is based off of a book or story or something...does anyone know the name of it and/or the author?

IMDB should list it.

I liked the movie very much ! But part three is still my favourite.
I had one problem ; what's with all those fancy computerinterfaces ? I've never seen those in real life. They could have made them a bit more realistic.

It said it was inspired by an article about techno-terrorism, if I'm not mistaken.

EDIT: It was inspired by the article "A Farewell to Arms" by John Carlin.

I just saw Live Free or Die Hard yesterday, and my thoughts are: "It sucked the first time when I saw it and it was called 'Enemy Of The State'."

There is nothing more lame than to watch a movie where the bad guy can hack any piece of electronic equiptment around the world and make it try to kill you while he pounds away on his keyboard, isolated in an unknown bunker, miles away from the real action, but thanks to webcams, it's as if he were right there.. A twelve year old can write that script..

Anyway, I noticed that McClane didn't smoke in this movie... did they ever establish that he had given up smoking in either of the two prior films..? I'll have to go back and watch them... I can't say I'm looking forward to that, I was hoping someone else might know off hand..

I love the character John McClane, but has there really been a good Die Hard film since the original..?

I know that in part 2 he says to himself when running through the underground tunnels: "I gotta stop smoking cigarettes"...and I think he was definitely smoking less, or maybe not at all, in part 3.

I don't remember him smoking at all in the third one; he was looking for aspirin the entire movie though.

Thanks for the input, guys.. I'm going back and watching 2 and 3 as I have time.. I'll let you know what I determine.. He does smoke in number 2, but I haven't heard him say anything about quitting yet.. (I only watched half last night..)

I just watched the unrated edition of LFoDH. This felt more like a Die Hard movie than the theatrical! Yes, there's more blood, McClane getting to say fuck alot, but more importantly...

SPOILER

'Yippee-ki-yay motherfucker' is in there in full (:D). McClane finishes out the line just before he shoots through himself.

END SPOILER

p.s. i've heard rumors that the unrated version of Die Hard 4.0 added blood scenes but were cgi made.

That's right, MidnightAngel. I've seen the unrated cut and it has plenty of "fucks". There are two in the scene where McClane's talking to his daughter and the "non-boyfriend", for instance. The CGI blood does stand out because of the "red mist" it creates but most are in very quick cuts, so it's not THAT noticeable.

I'd say this is a better version of DH4 because of the more familiar approach of the McClane character: even more foul-mouthed, that is :) .

Highly recommendable.

Wow, what a fun movie.

I just finished watching the unrated cut and yes their were a ton of fucks in here. Their still wasn't as much bloodshed here as the other Die Hards, but it didn't bother me. Willis is awesome per usual and his one-liners are gold. Justin Long is damn good as well. The baddies were meh though. Timothy Olyphant was way more menacing in The Girl Next Door for some reason and was too generic for a Die Hard villain. The action scenes kind of felt more like True Lies than Die Hard, but they were still pretty incredible nonetheless.
