View Full Version : People who watch movies JUST so they can criticize them.

You have all gotta know at least ONE of these pricks.

For me, it is my brother.

I swear, he'll go OUT of his damn way to watch movies he KNOWS he is going to hate just so he can bash them to the people he's watching it with that happen to actually enjoy the movie.

He seems to get some sort of thrill from trying to ruin any and every movie he can for those unfortunate enough to have to watch one with him.

As an example, I LOVED 28 days later and had told him about it and how much I liked it...so he comes over and says "hey let's check that movie out you like so much." So, we go and the WHOLE FUCKING MOVIE he's bitching about this and that (IE: "they are zombies why are they running? that's stupid!" to which I reply "they AREN'T FUCKING ZOMBIES YOU IDIOT!!!"). Anyway, by the time the movie is over, not only did I not get to enjoy it but I now wanna take my brother out of the world in a very painful fashion. Oh, but it gets worse....turns out he had already seen it the week before so the ONLY reason he went was to try to ruin it for me. FUCKER! haha

Even funnier....as a general rule he HATES movies (with the exception of Tombstone and Braveheart maybe) but he goes to the theatre more than any one person I know. He reminds me of a damn food critic.

This brother of yours sounds pretty annoying but the fact that he actually goes out of his way to watch movies he hates is pretty funny. I watch a lot of shitty movies myself. Usually I hope they turn out good but other times I know they just couldn't possibly. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

You know, I think you should distance yourself from your brother as he sounds like a fucking idiot.

Not for nothing, but the guy's your brother. It's in our mandate to fuck with the siblings. This isn't your own special circumstance, it's the history of the world, pal.

I'm going to try and see a bunch of bad movies like Little Man and Epic Movie just to have more credibility when I say they're horrible pieces of shit. But I think I have too much self-respect for that.

In your case, sez...yeah, your brother seems like the mayor of Douchetown.

But as someone who willfully watches movies he knows will more than likely suck, despite knowing this, I have to plead my case. As an online film critic, I feel it's my duty to give all flicks a fighting chance. It'd be unprofessional of me to only see a certain set of movies that some out and dismiss others without the slightest glance. Thus, I'll see DELTA FARCE as well as ZODIAC, NEXT as well as 300. I know they're probably not gonna be great, but at the end of the day, it's my job to see as wide a variety of movies as I can.

And even then, I don't go into all movies knowing they'll be horrible. I really do want to be surprised by a flick; I would love to step into the next Tyler Perry movie and be enraptured by a sensitive story or realistic characters after sitting through the hamfisted dreck he's been shoving down moviegoers' throats for the last two years.

Simply put, being a film critic/movie buff is a gamble. You take the good as well as the bad. It's all a matter of how dedicated you are to following that philosophy.

The only thing that bugs me when some people go see a movie they know they're not gonna like is not that they criticize it, but how they criticize it.

It's one thing to go, "I went in thinking this movie would be pretty bad and it certainly was and here's why...."

But it's something else when they break out some serious drama queen theatrics to express how they felt about it.

"Oh my god! The previews made it look like it would be the worst movie in the history of cinema for generations to come but it was so much worse! It was so bad I just wanted to kill everyone in the theater, burn the place down, find a homeless shelter, spend three weeks there before killing everyone in the building, then I wanted to kick a couple of kittens, tie some puppies in a burlap bag and throw them in a retention pond, before going into a preschool and telling all the children there's no such thing as Santa!"

but you aren't watching the movies JUST to bitch the whole duration of the movie about them. your case is understandable hehe

a big difference between a movie "critic" and a movie "dickhead"

I think the real issue might be people who watch movies without an open mind. They go in knowing it's going to suck, and do everything they can during the movie to make it out to suck.

I have a friend who knows I'm a big movie fan so any movie we watch that I think is a fantastic flick, he'll complain and try to pick it apart the entire time. I remember he made me turn Death to Smoochy (comedy genius) off because "it was too boring and wasn't funny." He also didn't laugh once during the Princess Bride (Satirical genius). And this is the kid who considers the first Mortal Combat movie as the greatest movie ever made. Sadly I don't think he's kidding. He also tried to drag me to the new Jamie Kennedy movie, hell no.

Superperfundo on the early eve of your day!

I thought they were zombies in 28 Days Later.

Anyway, I don't know anybody like your brother, but I do find some critics (especially in my city's newspaper, the Atlanta Journal Constitution) to give more bad reviews than good. It seems that they will only give a bad review all the time. And that not only confuses me, but it also pisses me off. Why watch movies for a living if you're not going to enjoy them? The money can't be THAT good.
