Hmmm... I know System of A Down covered Wu Tang Clan's "Shame on A Nigga". I was also surprised to find out that Gnarls Barkeley covered "Gone Daddy Gone" from The Violent Femmes. Puff Daddy also did a reworking of "Every Breath You Take" from The Police as Rihanna did with Soft Cell's "Tainted Love". That is all I can think of right now. Anyone else got any other ones? Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

I don't remember the name but Public Enemy did a song to the beat of "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield for the He Got Game soundtrack. It's not an exact cover but I do believe they borrow the chorus from the song.

Isn't it called, He Got Game?

Speaking of Public Enemy, they used parts of Angel of Death by Slayer for She Watch Channel Zero.

i dunno about rap covering entire rock songs, but they definately sample them.

eminem- sing for the moment (dream on - aerosmith)
trick daddy feat. lil jon - let's go (crazy train - ozzy)

the entire album 'renegades' by rage against the machine is a collection of obscure/vintage rap covers re-done by rage.

good point bringing up a punk band. that reminds me of 'me first and the gimme gimmes'....i would imagine they've got to have a ton of rap covers though i can't say for sure.

I bet Led Zepplin would like to forget about Diddy's cover of "Kashmir".
Which was called "Come with Me" from the movie Godzilla.

Actually , P.Diddy was being his usual uninspired composer. The same song was sampled by Scoolly D on the Bad Lieutenant soundtrack. The song was called "Signifying Rapper" but they had to take it out because of legal dispute with Led Zep.

Quote from Wikipedia : Director Abel Ferrara was angered by the incident, which he felt "ruined the movie":

I'll strangle that cocksucker Jimmy Page. As if every fucking lick that guy ever played didn't come off a Robert Johnson album. "Signifying Rapper" was out for five years, and there wasn't a problem. Then the film had already been out for two years and they start bitching about it. And these pricks, when their attorneys are on the job, our guys are afraid to come out of their office. You're not gonna fight their fucking warriors, you know what I mean? Can you imagine, this was down at a federal court in New York, with a 70-year-old judge, and they're playing Schoolly D and Led Zeppelin to the guy? It cost Schoolly like $50,000. It was a nightmare. And meanwhile, "Signifying Rapper" is 50 million times better than "Kashmir" ever thought of being. And then, this prick [Page] turns around with Puff Daddy and redoes it for the Godzilla soundtrack. Here's Puff Daddy, where every other song this boy sang was King Of New York this and King Of New York that. And I would never even fucking think of suing these guys. Why sue? You should be happy that somebody is paying homage to your work.

Go Abel ! :D

Don't confuse sampling with a cover song. A cover means you actually do the same song with your style . Sampling means you create a new song with a piece of a known song. Rap is infamous for sampling.

Damn, no one has mentioned Run DMC's cover of Walk This Way? That's usually the first one to come up when someone introduces this topic.

There was a whole cd of rock bands doing rap, I remember it had Mindless Self Indulgence doing Wu Tang's Bring The Pain and another band doing Goin Back To Cali (I think it was Sevendust). Any fans of rock/rap should check it out. I just googled it and found it here

I guess that would explain why it's such a kickass song.
