I don't intend to start another debate about Ann Coulter. I'm curious what people think about what Elizabeth Edwards did. Some say she is attempting to change political discourse and the only way to do that is to take action, to be strong and not ignore hate speech. Others say by responding directly to Coulter, she lowers herself to Coulter's level. What do you all think about it? Also, why does anyone at a network (like MSNBC or ABC) bother having Coulter as a guest? Is it strictly a ratings thing? Wouldn't we all be better off if she was just ignored?

Edwards defends her call to Coulter
She confronted the pundit Tuesday about insults aimed at her husband.

Elizabeth Edwards said Wednesday that she hopes other Americans will do what she was trying to do when she confronted conservative pundit Ann Coulter on national television this week.

Edwards, wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, said in an interview that it's time to put the brakes on the hateful speech spewed by people like Coulter. "It may take a while, but if we don't start, it'll take forever," she said.

The confrontation came Tuesday while Coulter was appearing on MSNBC's "Hardball." Elizabeth Edwards called the show and asked Coulter to refrain from using insulting language. Coulter laughed and accused Edwards of telling her to stop speaking.

Among other things, Coulter has referred to John Edwards as a "faggot" and recently said she wished he had died in a terrorist attack. In her call to the show, Elizabeth Edwards said Coulter once wrote that John Edwards probably had a bumper sticker on his car saying, "Ask me about my dead son." That was a reference to the Edwardses' teenage son, Wade, who was killed in a traffic accident.

Coulter smiled and wondered aloud why a candidate's wife was making such a call.

Edwards responded: "I'm the mother of that boy who died."

In a phone interview from her North Carolina home Wednesday, Edwards said people like Coulter trade in hurtful insults instead of honest debate. "At some point, somebody has to stand up and say, 'That's enough,' " she said.

Edwards said she did not consult her husband before making the call, though she said campaign aides tracked down the phone number for her. She was sitting in an airport between campaign visits when she saw Coulter on television and called the show.

Edwards said she knows that many people would advise her to ignore the insults instead of dignifying them with a response. But she said that is not the way to change things. She said she has been inspired by a cultural shift in the South. When she moved there decades ago, she said, it was acceptable for people to use racist language. But then people who disliked such language started making their objections known, and eventually it became unacceptable. She said she hopes the same will happen with the things Coulter and others say.

Coulter's publicist did not immediately respond to a request for a comment.

Peverill Squire, a University of Iowa political science professor, said it's unusual for a candidate's spouse to make such a public challenge to a critic. But he said she risked little in making the call. "Certainly, among Democrats, going after Ann Coulter is not going to raise any concerns," he said.

Elizabeth Mehren, a Boston University journalism professor who has followed the Edwardses, said Elizabeth Edwards' effort is admirable. Mehren said, however, that the Edwards campaign jumped to use the confrontation as a fundraising tool, which she said could be seen as "tacky."

"Aren't they just lowering themselves to Ann Coulter's level by doing this?" Mehren said. "Isn't the best way to handle bullies to ignore them?"

If Coulter dies I'll formally send all of you invitations to the most massive party ever at my place. Depending on the painfulness of the death will be how massive the party will be.

I'll barbecue some chicken and ribs. I make my own home made sauce.

Kidding, really. I don't wish her dead. Because then I'll never get a chance to pie her in the face.

On a side note, Edwards says his campaign raised more money this week than any other week so far. Wonder why?

:D

I really don't see how anyone could take that as Ms. Edwards "stooping to her level."

Mehren said. "Isn't the best way to handle bullies to ignore them?"

That's gotta be the dumbest thing I've ever heard. The best way to handle bullies always has been and always will be to confront them (in the correct manner) and it seems like Elizabeth Edwards did just that.

It isn't like Mrs. Edwards called Coulter a stupid dike, so I don't really see how talking to someone maturely = stooping to their level. Saying Edwards is stooping to Coutlers level is a really bad spin on the situation.

For some reason, some people seem to believe that ignoring people like Coulter is the best way to deal with them. That if you acknowledge them and respond to them, it somehow means you are using the same tactics and are no better. I have heard that explanation a few times since this incident.

By "tactics" they must mean basic human communication, because I'd say anyone with half a sense about them can tell that calling someone a faggot isn't the same tactic as asking someone to refrain from hate speech. It's like calling Gandhi a warmonger because he took action against warmongers. Or to make it more topical -- those people who push for smoking bans: What a bunch of smokers!

Yeah I was surprised when I heard certain people criticize Edwards for what she did, so I wanted to see if it was just me or if others here feel the same way. So back to my other question. Why do networks like MSNBC and ABC book Coulter as a guest? Is it strictly for ratings?

No doubt.

In all fairness though, Coulter has more business being there than anything Paris Hilton-related.

True, but I can't help but be saddened at the fact that Coulter is booked on these shows because it helps the ratings.

At least she doesn't have her own show... yet anyways.

While I would never wish her dead, if Ann Coulter was raped and then torn limb from limb alive by satanists, I wouldn't mind.

Well considering that Coulter has built her career on people "reacting" to her, its not a completely faulty argument.

Unfortunately at this point Democrats need to start giving it as hard as they get. Quiet, stoicism doesn't win the elections. Of course it is a sad report on the Democrats side when its the candidates' wife whose the one hitting back.

Also I love how Ann Coulter equates not debating like a middle schooler as being told to shut the fuck up. Unfortunately since she knows no other way of speaking it actually would mean for her to go mute.

Ann Coulter isn't worth the cancer that will eventually kill Elizabeth Edwards.

WTF was she doing on Hardball? Why does anyone book this flaming cunt?

And have you ever noticed that she never, ever answers a direct question? Whenever challenged, her reply is usually "Well, Bill Clinton..."

Ann Coulter is proof there is such a thing as reincarnation. She's almost an exact replica of Eva Braun.

Anyway, I feel like a huge hypocrite. I'm mad at what she said about wanting John Edwards to be killed in a terrorist assassination plot, but then I realized....."wait a minute, I want the exact same thing to happen to HER!" How coincidental.

The best part of that Coulter/Edwards thing was right at the end of it when Matthews asked Coulter about a part in her book and she asked him to read the sentence to her since she didn't have any idea of what he was talking about.

I wonder how many people actually have lowered themselves to Coulter's level in response to her. Not Edwards, but maybe others.
