View Full Version : Is 8 dollars for a large popcorn REALLY necessary?

sezperai

I can no longer afford to go to the freakin theater to watch movies.

8 dollars per ticket for my wife and myself = 16 bucks
+8 dollars for large popcorn = 24 bucks
+5 dollars per cola = 34 bucks
+3 dollars for skittles = 37 bucks
+3 dollars for m&ms = 40 bucks
+5 dollars (sometimes) for nachos = 45 bucks
+5 dollars per kids ticket (3) = 60 bucks

electric bill this month = 58 bucks
cable bill this month = 45 bucks
phone bill this month = 28 bucks
internet bill this month = 28 bucks

something is wrong when you have 4 separate MONTHLY bills that cost LESS than one outing at the movie theater.

hell I could get a used car + insurance for less than it would cost me to see 4 movies in the theater per month.

is it really necessary to charge 8 dollars (or even more) for 20 cent worth of popcorn?
or 5 dollars for 15 cent worth of soda?

if things keep going the way they are....in 5 years it'll cost 200 bucks to take your family to the theater....

fuck that

dvds = 15 bucks.
popcorn at home = 3 bucks (for a 6 pack)
soda at home = 1.59 for a 2 liter
candy at home (movie theater boxes) = 1 dollar per box

but yea....the movie pirates are the SOLE reason for the decline in movie theater customers.

Yeah, I always take my own food to the theatre if I'm hungry. But I don't always take food in if I'm not hungry. When I do it's usually just a candy bar or something of the like. I'd rather pay $.60 for it at my local Wawa versus being raped up the ass for it at the theatre.

they are nazi's about it here....they won't even let women take purses in half the time and they walk the theater CONSTANTLY.....i've seen them boot ppl from just about every show I've been to since they built the stadium here about 5 years ago for outside food/drink.

and i've actually seen them pat ppls jackets and stuff down to make sure they weren't bringing stuff in

Fuck that! I would just eat before I go to the movie if that were the case. No way would I spend $60 at the movies. I used to work at a theatre and couldn't believe the ridiculous prices we charged people. We charged $4.25 for a large popcorn but that was five years ago so I'm sure the price has gone up. The reason I was given for why they charge so much is because they hardly make ANY money from ticket sales. At least %80 of that goes to the movie company so they have to jack up the prices in their concession stands because it is their big source of income. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

i've heard this also.....but wouldn't it make more business sense to make the popcorn say 3 bucks and then ppl will actually be able to AFFORD to go in droves.....it's still a hellacious profit.....no way in hell it costs more than 20 cent to make a large popcorn......(in reality its probably closer to about 3 cent since they buy in bulk)

dunno..maybe they figure "hey let's charge 10 bucks a pop for a large popcorn.....less ppl will buy it..but we'll make just as much and not have as much mess to clean up"

fuckers....the movie theater experience just isn't the same for me without some damn buttery ass popcorn.

It's the sizes that get me. A small is like $5 or something and is fucking huge. Then these theater managers have the kids pushing for the large sizes, which I made the mistake of getting one time. Holy fuck, man. That was like enough popcorn for 30 people. Why the fuck would you offer that to one person with a date???

All I want is like 12oz of popcorn, or whatever the smalls used to be. Charge me $4 whatever - just don't make me feel like an ass throwing away 3 pounds of popcorn at the end of my 90 minute movie.

They need to offer kid's sizes or something - maybe they do and I've never noticed. Either way. That's a lot of popcorn!

Well, luckily for me I don't even like popcorn. Unfortunately, I love Junior Mints....and those have got to be at least $4 nowadays.

This is the real reason why ticket sales are down. The home theater experiance is continually growing and expanding, while movie theaters jack up the prices for the same ol same ol. Honestly, why would you spend that money (probobly around 30 bucks if you keep your snack selection modest) on a movie you're only getting to see once with a possibility of getting a room full of cell phones, teenagers, or babies to block out portions of your film. You could go out buy the DVD and watch it as many times as you like. Hell even pause it. Either the theater experiance needs to change, or the prices do.

I totally agree with that. I'd rather wait for the dvd. Doesn't matter if i see a movie upon the release or 3 months later , it's still the same movie.

man your area just sucks on prices, where do you live because this seems localized to me. I know concession prices are outrageous everywhere but yours just seems more so.

Full price tickets for me and my wife $13
extra large popcorn, 2 extra large sodas, 1 bag of M&Ms in what my theatre calls the extra large combo- $10
$3 for skittles
$4 for nachos
$4.50 a piece for 3 kids- $13.50

I coild do the same thing for $43.50 at my theatre, but usually we just do the extra large combo and it runs is $23 to go the movies

the reason theatres have such outrageous concessions prices is because thats where they make all their money, with studios grabbing %50-75 of the box office (its like an average of %65 because of how front loaded movies are now days) they don't make any money from the box office. But if they would just learn to sell by quantity instead of price they could make just as much money like walmart does. If an extra large popcorn and drink were a $1 a piece would you not sell 4-5 as many of them because people wouldn't be tempted to sneak food in and more people who normally skip concessions because of the outrageous prices would actually grab a popcorn or drink. I mean you'd make the same money and the same amount of profit, your customers would be happier and more people might go to the movies.

I'd dare a theatre to try it out for a week and see what happens.

I'll often buy a soda at my theatre soley because that is the main way they make profit. Foot/candy i go to a shop in the mall.

Out of curiosity, do they do this at the majority of theaters where you are at? Also, do you lack a selection of theaters where you live? Where I'm at, I could choose between at least 10 theaters within a 10 mile radius.

Also, by any chance, are you younger than 22? It would surprise me if they pat down every visitor they had.

I sneek food in all the time. Infact, I often go to Subway buy hogie and cookies and sneek that into the theater.

These prices are actually really decent for a theater.

If I were to go on a film in the evening, the average price is $9 to $10.50 for a ticket.

Sodas are like $3.50 and up.
Popcorn is like $4 and up.
Candy is $4 and up. (these are the prices for the "small" sizes).

Needless to say, I avoid getting concessions at a movie. I prefer to eat at a nice restaurant before/after the show than to blow $60 on a movie.

I echo the sentiments that teenkiller posted. I wish that prices for items were reasonable for concessions at theaters.

I don't expect things to be as cheap as 7-11, but I'm not going to pay a 1000% markup on an item. I believe that they could make more profit (not to mention the fact that consumers would be more satisfied) if they tried sell by volume rather than by opportunism.

Let's see I usually go to a matinee which is $7.50

Regular price is $9.75

Small drink is $5.00

Large drink, which is what I would normally get is $5.50

Small popcorn is like $5.75 but I NEVER get popcorn because I can't stand movie theater popcorn.

If I get food, it's usually something at Regal called a Tornado which is only 3 bucks. Or a hot dog, which is 3 bucks too. Or Pretzel bites with Cheese which is like like six bucks.

But that's pretty rare. Usually I just sneek food in.

I think much like how drive in theatres were phased out in the 80s the same thing will be happening with regular theatres over the next 30 years or so. People's aggrevation with the theatre experience will eventually reach a boiling point. The only thing I'll miss is the big screen itself. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Whoa!!! That's a fricking rip-off.

In my city, it's like Almost 10 bucks for a ticket and large pop/popcorn combo is only like 10.50. But that's before taxes.

Now I know a reason, not to move to Georgia.

PS: I always usually sneak stuff in the theatre, when I'm short for food.

The only thing that is a must when going to a theater nowdays is POPCORN!

Everything else.....................SNEAK IN!

And theater chains does have special deals

Prices now are OUTRAGEOUS and you do NOT have to buy it though its theater outlets is their bread n butter.

Same can be said of any concession stand that's housed within a movie theatre. At a Transformers screening last week, my buddy got a Burger King combo and it cost (and I shit you not) $12! Ironically, there's a BK across the street outside of the theater so he went there, got the same combo for about $7 and brought it back to the theater. Does that make sense.

Nuts.

But then again, we could go on about $5 Starbucks coffees, $3 bottles of water etc etc etc...high volume high margin items.

sirdizzy
07-04-2007, 02:57 PM
I have compalined about the monopoly that one theatre chain has had over my area in the past, but then I hear about other peoples prices and I am happy. Because they basically get every single ticket sale and movie dollar spent in a town of 75,000 they have no need to ever raise prices. The last price raise was 50 cents like 6 years ago.

Full Price is $6.50, matinees are $4.50 and like i said its been that way for 6 years before that it was $6 for like another 6 years.

And they do the extra large combo which is awesome you get 2 extra large drinks, 1 extra large popcorn and 1 candy for $10. Plus the soda and popcorn come with free refills. I think thats why they have never raised prices every body buys the extra large combo, I mean these sell in massive volumes, so they are kinda of doing volume sales. They recently raised their prices for and extra large soda and a medium popcorn to $7, i mean shit for another $3 you get 1 more soda a larger popcorn and a candy.

If I am by myself I buy their spiderman combo, its and extra large soda and a small bag of popcorn for $3.50.

teenkiller

After reading this post, I'm glad I don't get anything from the theatre. It's ridiculous. I just figure most movies are like 90-120 minutes, so I'll just eat and drink something before I go, or at least just drink something so that my mouth wont get dry. Than if I'm hungry or thirsty i'll go somewhere after the movie. I can go 2 hours without eating or drinking so it's no big deal for me.

Also, like many have said, if I am in the mood for something small, I'll pick it up at CVS or something. Hell one time I had a bottle of soda in my pants (I had somewhat baggy pants on), and you could sorta see the outline of the bottle, but no one said anything. I guess it depends on the theatre. For example, there have been times when I'd say I wanted a student ticket, and they've asked for ID, other times they just give me the ticket.

You left the part out where the theater management put a gun to your head and made you buy all that stuff.

Seriously, I've worked in movie theaters since 1994. I hear this complaint over and over. But you know what? You guys just keep on buying it. That's why concession prices are so expensive.

If everyone stopped buying popcorn tomorrow, theaters would flip out. But you won't. You never will. Because if you don't, you'll somehow starve to death by not eating/drinking for a couple hours.

Yup.
I just try not to make too much noise with my snacks, so as not to tip off the 15 year old ushers and have them "dime me out" to someone.

THOUGH I saw this couple walk into a local theater with friggin Chinese take out once, right past the ushers and not a word was said.

This is kinda-sorta related...

I use to work at this ice cream shop. And the prices were pretty high. Small cup was 4.25, a waffle cone was 5$, etc. I know they were high, but...it's the hamptons.

Once a group of 4 came in and they all looked at the menu and etc and all picked waffle cones. I tell them it's 20$ after getting them the ice cream (tax included, so 20$ flat). And they go "WAIT! 20$?????! That can't be right!!!!"

.....But they looked at the FUCKING menu! Were they too lazy to notice the $5.00 next to their choices?

.....This is just for people who bring it up with the people who serve food. We don't make the prices.

But yeah, the high prices suck, but sometimes you just can't resist buying it. Nothing wrong with wanting popcorn at a "popcorn movie", but I'm always being cheap at the theater. I buy a matinee ticket (5$, boo-yah!) theater hop, and all I usually get is a 3$ bottled soda. I'm sure with kids though theater's are expensive as hell.

......End of random and un-needed reply #23.

I always just get a cup of water since it's free. It's sort of funny, though, because I always go up to the counter, the person working says something like "Hello, can I help you? :)" and then when I ask for a cup of water, they give me this dirty look, don't say anything and give me a tiny ass cup. I honestly don't see why the person working there would give a shit that I wasn't giving the theater a profit, especially with those prices, and this has happened to me many many times.

Normally I would be a smartass and say it wouldn't cost that much if you didn't go and have kids, but my personal views on pro-creating don't even need to be applied here.

When I used to go to the theatre a few years back it would like this:

I'm pretty sure I never said anywhere in my post that I buy that shit everytime i go.......usually when I go by myself I buy a soda and that's it. It's part of the whole "theater experience" to have some candy, popcorn and a coke........that's why people continue to buy them....not because they'll "somehow starve to death by not eating for a couple of hours".......the whole experience is the reason why most people go to the movies...........there's just something about watching the big screen, drinkin your soda and eating some popcorn that beats the shit outta sittin home watchin it.....

and no.........the manager puts no gun to our heads

but if we want to get the full theater experience (for some it's soda and popcorn...others it's icee and nachos etc etc) with a bit of munchies while we watch the show...then yes...we have no choice but to buy their overpriced shit.........

Dang! What theatre did you go to? At any of the theaters I've ever gone to, parking was free. I don't know what you mean 'per cap', but you can't get a drink or a popcorn at any of my local theaters for under $4.

They just really need to offer smaller sizes. It reminds me of that movie where Cheech and Chong are at the theater and have the garbage can filled with popcorn.

When I used to go to the theatre a few years back it would like this:

Parking $11
Ticket $11
Popcorn $6
Soda $4

$32 just for myself. Fuck that noise!

I'd only pay $11 for parking if it was a premiere at a Hollywood theater. Otherwise, I'd just go to a good theater with free parking.

What's getting me is that the price of a matinee costs more than an evening show used to cost - and I'm talking about what seems like only 7 years ago. I know that's just how things go, you may say, but it's not.

The whole idea of having to staff a theater like it's a small military complex is what's driving costs out of the ballpark. They INSIST that we want stadium seating, and gargantuan-sized concessions, but I really don't believe we do. If one of these take-all chains would step up and actually attempt to build modest sized theaters, say 8 screens, that showed 8 movies - not over half filled with the same two movies, then offered us convenience store-competitive prices --- I guarant-fucking-tee you that we'd stop hearing this shit about how Hollywood isn't earning like it used to.

The reason Hollywood isn't earning like it used to is because the freaking theaters aren't showing movies like they used to. Don't get me wrong, stadium seating is cool, but when they asked me on the survey about it some 15 years ago, they left out the important parts.

I'm sorry. When it comes down to the bare essentials of seeing films - You compare paying $8 for a matinee, just to get one butt in the seat, or $15 for the same movie on DVD with unlimited rewatch value as well as being able to share with friends --- There's just no competition. These two things shouldn't even be in competition, but we listened to the theaters whine about their survival long enough - now the customers are looking to just that, and realized when all is said and done, they'd just as soon see the movie than have a whole theater experience. Suddenly home video worked just fine enough.

It's sad, IMO, because they really tried to give us what we wanted - but they were the ones that got greedy first.

I've started bringing all my snacks with me now.
I always wear my shorts with the biggest cargo pockets.
Our theater has a coke machine. It's $2.50 for 16oz bottle. But I sometimes just bring a coke with me. They don't know if I got it from the machine or not.

I usually end up getting a kids combo, as any other combo is way to pricey and I never end up finishing it. It's not a bad deal, although I feel a little embarassed walking around with a little Shrek bucket full of popcorn. The kinder surprise is a nice bonus though. I usually end up building the little toy during the picture to add to the "developly challenged" look I convey carrying a Shrek popcorn bucket.

i just buy my food from the supermarket.1.5 coke there is $1.59 where a large coke at the movies is $4.70.so it works out cheaper plus i have some left over coke.

unlike yesterday.

die hard 4
parking -$10
movie ticket -$15.50
large popcorn $5.00
large coke-$4.70

so $35.20 to watch a 2 hour movie.

where i could just rent a new release from blockbuster for $5.00.large coke from supermarket $1.59 and bag of chips for $2.so under $10 bucks sounds alot better to me.

However, when you are taking the wife and kids out to the movie....naturally the kids are gonna want stuff....the wife is gonna want stuff....and why not?

Ive never understood the "GOTTA eat/drink while i watch a movie!" craze. Like its crack or something. They HAVE to buy it!:)

My wife absolutly love theatre popcorn, we live 3 blocks from a theatre and she will have me go down and buy the popcorn to take home when we are watching a dvd at home. She will go to a movie she has no interest in seeing with me just to get the popcorn. I think they mix crack in the butter somedays.

I don't understand what they must be thinking "who wouldn't sombody want to spend an obscene amount on food, pop corn and drinks?" "Why can't people just follow the rules and just agree to be blasted in the ass?" If they would just stop raping people's wallets and actually charged a fair grocery price (which still is way above vendor cost-still making a profit) I quarentee their sales would sky rocket, stupid goddamn corportate bastards, wanting to make a fast buck instead of waiting for a growing gradual payoff. F them, I sneak candy all the time and I make a point to leave my trash behind.

In some people it's linked to anxiety. The snacking keeps them from becoming full engulfed in the movie, which for some people is a better place to be.

Me, I just like to eat.

All movie theater profits come from concession sales. Ticket sales go to the movie companies (although I think after two weeks of release some of the ticket sales go to the theater. I'm fuzzy on that.). Movie theaters aren't cheap to operate.

I'd complain, but I work at a movie theater, so I get free movies, popcorn, and soda. I'm saving a fortune.

When I first moved to London I went to the cinema and nearly shit a brick at the cost of a ticket.

It cost me £19 ($38) for 2 tickets over 2 years ago!

In Manchester it'll set you back about £7 ($14) for a single ticket and £3.50 ($7) for a large fizzy pop. There's no law against taking your own drinkies and munchies into the cinema mind...so I try and do this whenever possible.

The pictures can be a dear do, 'tis true.

Just reading the first post, it might cost slightly less if you didnt eat so much. Try eating before you go to the cinema...then you might not need so many munchies!!

If I'm going to eat at the movies, I do generally smuggle stuff in. But I have a habit of going after a main meal, so I dont usually snack ;)

I remember when I went to see a movie once and I was under suspicion of trying to smuggle in treats. The usher snapped on a latex glove and I thought he was just kidding around... long story short, he found the cucumber.

Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

I don't call it smuggling , i call it a right . Who the hell are they to say i can't bring in a legal substance , like candy or soda . Freak them , i bring stuff in all the time , i even go as far as to bringing an entire cooler full of stuff , i just put it in my backpack . If they ever try to search me , i won't go there again , like what happened at another theater .

I'm sick of this garbage with the concessions , it's fekkin criminal if you ask me , the prices are inflated 5 times what they really are . And i don't want to hear about them trying to make money , last i looked , this summer was the biggest in history for the box office . Yeah , they're crying poverty in order to justify ripping people off , cause that's what it is , plain and simple , just like at the sporting events .

Oh , you say they have to pay all these employees , wow , a bunch of minimum wage workers is really going to break the bank , they can prob make enough in one week to pay all their salaries , okay i'm exaggerating a bit but i don't see a multiplex having a problem paying their employees .

It's just arrogance and greed , they want to gouge the public , because they know once they go in , they are a captive audience . They know once a kid passes the concession , he'll cry to his parents to buy him something , and the parent will pay whatever it takes to keep little jonny happy . So they don't care if it costs 6 dollars for a medium soda and 6 dollars for some dried out popcorn and another 4 for some candy .

I say fekk them , i'm not taking this bullshit anymore . The prices are way too high , the ticket and concession . I only go to the matinee showings now , but even those are creeping up now , and i bring my own stuff . How come i can buy a 12 pack of soda for about 3 dollars at the store , but a 30 ounce or so drink at the theater is 5 , 6 dollars . Come on , i know the theater is getting a bulk discount and then they inflate the price .

I only go to the theater on rare occasions , it has to be something i really want to see , i won't just go to give me something to do , but because i actually want to .

I say fuck the rules and bring whatever you feel like bringing to a film. For years, I've employed the jacket trick, which is take off your jacket and whatever you food (burger, popcorn, etc) you bring, you stuff it inside the jacket and hold the top of the bag from the collar, so then it looks like you're simply holding a jacket... make sure to have your money/ID ready in your other hand. simple as pie and you don't need a purse to sneak anything in.

I'm sick of many movie theaters in Los Angeles. I went to this piece of shit movie theater in Hollywood called the ArcLight just because it's the only one playing Eastern Promises. Let me say, this place makes going to the movies seem like you're going to go a fancy restaurant or club. It's incredibly lame filled with the worst kind of movie goers: the ones that don't react at all to the film they're watching. It cost $14 to see a film on a Sunday. They justify the price because of no commercials and the picture quality, but I say fuck that. I can't stand upscale theaters like this... it just kills the point of going to a movie. Why does everybody have to act like it's big deal now?

Give me the grimy theater any day of the week over this. At least people there know they're paying to see a film and react to it, unlike these boring idiots who pay extra just so they can guffaw at a scene.

Actually, I've never had to pay for parking at a movie theatre. I was just responding to another post. Of the three theaters that I visit most frequently-- AMC Lennox (Columbus, OH), Regal Boulevard (Niles, OH), and Drexel Gateway (Columbus, OH)--the AMC and Regal Theaters provide free parking and I only park in the deck next to the Drexel if it's too wet/cold to walk from the university--and even then it's only $1 for the 2-3 hrs I'm there.

The Arclight is shity? Really? Every time I go to LA I must go to the arclight. They have the best sound and picture in the world, its a fact. and another note, I work at a theater and I will tell you, if people keep bringing shit in and not buying concessions the ticket prices will just keep going up. Theaters make nothing off ticket sales the first 2 weeks and only a very small fraction after that. So go ahead, sneak shit in, and then come back here next year to bitch and moan about tickets going up.

first off what the hell theatre are you going to that charges that much for popcorn, i thought 5/6 dollars was a rip off. I mean if you see the popcorn kernals at the store, its probably about 10 cents worth for the amount you have in a large popcorn, theatres are just jacked off but we dont help because were all whores and we still buy the popcorn. I have noticed around here though, that the Cinemark theatres don't even give free refills on large drinks anymore, sure I don't NEED a refill sometimes, but other timesI am really thirsty and I want some more soda, how much is a cup of soda worth in that form, 50 cents? they over charge us for the one soda, at least give us a refill too.
