View Full Version : Battle of the Rock Decades: The 70s VS. The 90s

The two greatest decades in music in my opinion. With the 70s came some of my favorite acts of all time like Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, great stuff from Jimi Hendrix, The Allman Brothers Band, and so many more. While the 90s on the other hand brought even more of my favorite acts to the plate like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, Oasis, Pearl Jam, and the Stone Temple Pilots. Probably because of the decade's influence on rock and roll, I have to go with the 70s. I have been on a huge 90s kick for about 4 months now, and I just keep discovering new shit that brings me back to that great decade. Both decades were amazing though.

The two best decades. I'll go with the 90's.

Tough question....but I'm going with the 90's. 90's music is what I grew up on and it's what got me through some tough times at school. Nothing beats songs of nostalgia.

Can't stand all the classic 70s rock bands. I think there was a lot of garbage in the 90's but I can find more stuff I like in that decade though. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

The 70s because of Genesis, Gentle Giant, Yes, Pink Floyd, Gryphon, Strawbs, Camel, Van Der Graaf Generator, King Crimson, Rush, etc.

I like a lot of 90s stuff too, but 70s prog is my cup of tea.

i'll go with 70's, but its close...

however, and this will be probably the most controversial thing to say... 80's rock blew them both away...

The 90s spawned my three most hated bands of all time (Staind, Nirvana, Hole), so no matter how many good bands were rocking in the 90s, 70s wins by default.

I refused to vote. Where was the choice for the 80's? Yeah, there was a lot of shitty bands but there was also some great albums and my favorite albums of all time were released in the 80's. Here they are...

Ozzy Osbourne: Blizzard of Ozz, Diary of a Madman, Tribute

Rush: Moving Pictures, Exit...Stage left

Metallica: Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All

AC/DC: Back in Black

Guns N Roses: Appetite for Destruction

Not controversial at all in my opinion, I figured that would be common sense. Unfortunately I was obviously mistaken.

Yeah the 80s had its highpoints... but it also has more low (and when I say low I mean some reeeeeeeeal low) points than the 70s or 90s. The 70s and 90s are just overall a lot more powerful than the 80s in my opinion.

The 80's did have lots of low points. Your dead on there. However, at least for my tastes, the real hard rock guitar music was born in the 80's. Guys like EVH and Randy Rhoads spearheaded it. Everyone else followed, most of them didn't compare which is where hair metal came from.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the 60's. Personally, I'm going with the 90's. The 00's have easily been the worst.

I think the rock guitar of the 80s was just trying to separate itself from what guys like Hendrix, Page, and Iommi started in the late 60s and kept going throughout the 70s. Like I said though every decade has had its highpoints and lowpoints, and I just picked my favorite two.

I'm on the same wavelength as Jerk...

Some of my most favorite and most influential music is from the 90's, but I can't look past the 70's for that reason alone.

70's by default...

The 70's for me, although disco does bring it down a couple of notches.
I love classic rock.

However, the 80's is probably my favorite decade, because of my age.
It takes me back to the crazy days of my youth. I still remember cruising the strip jamming to Motley Crue and the Scorpions.
Damn, I was cool. ;)

Well like I said the 80's is my favorite mostly because of Randy Rhoads work with Ozzy and the early Metallica stuff. If I had to pick the 70's or the 90's I'd have to go with the 90's. I wasn't into Hendrix or Zepplin or any of the other classic rock groups. The 90's at least gave me Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Days of the New, STP, Candlebox and a few others.

None of which would be around if it weren't for Zeppelin or Hendrix. Not downing your opinion, mind you, AIC, PJ, and STP are also three of my favorite acts of all-time, I'm just pointing out how influential the rock and roll of the 70s was, and why it got my vote.

Very nice to see some love for Days of the New...one of the most underrated bands of the '90s....not necessarily their first album but II (Green) and III (Red) were Travis Meeks' divulge into progressive music.

Dude I'm not downing the impact Zeppelin and Hendrix had. I just personally don't dig their music.

Like a couple of other people I also prefer the 80's (like Spongie, because of my age) but as far as this poll goes, I've got to say 70's.
When I was younger there was alot of 70's music I didn't like but grew to like it as I got older.

I've been somewhat on a disco kick lately and I can't figure out why.

I'm pretty sure that's not it. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go slip into my John Travolta, "Saturday Night Fever", white leisure suit. :)

See, this is why you're going to out live the rest of us, because you're a dancer. Unless of course, you die from boogie fever. :D
