Thread title says it all.
Kevin Bacon in The Woodsman
How he wasn't nominated is beyond me. He's AMAZING in this movie, and he's virtually ignored. Not to mention IMO it's one of the more underrated flicks out there.
Sean Penn in The Assassination of Richard Nixon
I know he's already been nominated like 6 times, but he still deserved to be nominated in this IMO. Another movie that was overlooked and didn't get enough exposure.
Patrick Wilson in Little Children
He was every bit as good as Kate Winslet.
Noah Emmerich in Little Children
Jackie Earle Hayley was just a bit better, but both were excellent.
Brad Pitt in Babel
Ok, the supporting actor category was PACKED this year, but he deserved a nom. I won't mention others who I think deserved a nom like Jack Nicholson or etc. It was just too strong this year, but I believe atleast Pitt should have slipped in there.
WILL be snubbed...
Catherine Keener and Ellen Page in An American Crime
Both preformances were amazingly amazing. But I have a feeling either A) The film will still be in limbo and not released or B) It will not get enough exposure.
I know I'm forgetting others so I'll keep this to be continued...
Oh, but if someone posts something like "Jamie Kennedy in The Son of the Mask!"...
I will remove your balls and/or eggs.
And Tagia_Romero will help me.
(...won't you? ;))

He was.
And, concerning the preformances in Hard Candy. Though the preformances by Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson are two of my favorite preformances...ever. I don't really think they were oscar-baity stuff. Though if I did run the academy, I'd have given them both the oscars. And if either of them were nominated, I'd have blown every member of the Academy.
I'd like to add another "should've" to the list.
Tom Cruise in Collateral
Pleasssssse!
Jamie Foxx was better than Cruise in Collateral?
In my opinion, that's hogwash.
Foxx was great but if anyone from that movie should've been nominated from that movie, it should've been Cruise.

The first performance that immediatley came to mind:
Eric Bana - Munich
http://www.dangerousuniverse.com/2007/01/best_of_2006.jpg
The 2006 awards were certainly very substantial in high-quality performances, but nevertheless, Bana's heavily demanding performance was just BEGGING for at least a mere form of recognition. This may as well have been his breakthrough performance, and he absolutely nailed his character to the very core not only by providing that empathetic emotional punch, but also by simultaneously juggling with and understanding the heavy, provocative, and not to mention controversial subject matter of the film. Do the math, and you have a performance that is just as well rounded, and dare I say just as haunting, as the film itself. Hopefully Bana will garner a more substantial (both in terms of quality and quantity) body of work, because he was just scorching with intensity in Munich. Truly an overlooked masterwork.

Dear God where to start?
Tony Leung Chiu Wai & Maggie Cheung - In the Mood for Love
Michael Douglas - Wonder Boys
Zhang Ziyi - Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon & 2046
Gene Hackman, Luke Wilson, & Gwyneth Paltrow - The Royal Tenenbaums
Ewan McGregor - Moulin Rouge!
Isabelle Huppert & Benoit Magimel - The Piano Teacher
Naomi Watts - Mulholland Drive
Charlotte Rampling - Under the Sand, Swimming Pool, & Lemming
Steve Buscemi - Ghost World
Brian Cox - L.I.E
Ryan Gosling - The Believer
Ivan Dobronravov - The Return
Sarah Polley - My Life Without Me
Scarlett Johansson - Lost in Translation
Kevin Bacon - The Woodsman
Gael Garcia Bernal - Bad Education
Paul Giamatti - Sideways
Nicole Kidman - Dogville
Joseph Gordon-Levitt - Mysterious Skin & Brick
Tommy Lee Jones & Barry Pepper - The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
Bill Murray - Broken Flowers
Clifton Collins Jr. - Capote
Deborah Francois - The Page Turner & L'Enfant
Jack Nicholson - The Departed
Ellen Page - Hard Candy
Kate Dickie - Red Road
I would consider all of the above to be among the top 5 or 10 performances of their respective years in this decade, yet not one of them received a nom. Admittedly, I do realize that a good portion of these are not the typical 'Oscar bait' performances that are recognized, but I would've definitely given special attention to all of them if I were a member of the AMPAS.
Going beyond the 2000s, I would say
Ingrid Bergman - Casablanca & Notorious
The name that immediately came to mind when I read the title of this thread. This woman has 3 Oscars added to her resume and she doesn't even receive a fucking nomination for her two greatest, most legendary and iconic performances?!
Humphrey Bogart - The Maltese Falcon
Another WTF? omission. Seriously, Academy....
The chilling and gut wrenching nuanced turns from Liv Ullmann and Bibi Andersson in Persona. I know, I know, not 'Oscar bait', but you get the picture.
Bill Murray - Rushmore
Too low key and quirky for the Academy perhaps. I think this is a better performance than his nominated turn in Lost in Translation, and that's saying a LOT.
Jack Nicholson - The Passenger & The Shining
Two completely different styles of acting, featuring Jack in one of his most subdued parts and Jack at his most "Jack"; both are equally extraordinary.
Harry Dean Stanton & Nastassja Kinski - Paris, Texas
That final moment with them in the booth ranks among one of the top 10 acting scenes ever committed to celluloid. No matter how good the monologues are on script, without the right actors to pour their emotional weight into those lines with the understated intensity that's called for, I wouldn't have been moved by the scene as much as I did.
It's all in the subtleties, but unfortunately, subtle performances rarely get recognition from the Academy.
Shelley Duvall - 3 Women
Acting (if it can even be called that in this case) of the highest caliber. Duvall wasn't portraying Millie, she was Millie. I'm just happy that she at least received a well deserved Cannes award.
Michael Redgrave - The Browning Version
Once again, Oscar, understatement (not histrionics) is key.

Leo diCaprio - The Departed
Sacha Baron Cohen - Borat (bout time a comedy performance was recognised)

I think Ian McDiarmid for "Star Wars: Episode III - The Revenge of the Sith" was overlooked for Supporting Actor. He did a great job in that one.
