First listen...a little disappointing. I think the first song to be released (The Night Starts Here) was the best one.

I don't think it's a horrible album, I like a few songs on it but there's just not enough blowing me away here, especially after the few years since Set Yourself on Fire. The album's too...quiet (I don't mean they need to be rowdy but just...something's missing). The lyrics are sometimes a little weak, even among the tracks I like. I miss synth-y Stars as well. On the other hand, I really like the amping up of the interplay of the male and female vocals.

On first run-through, the tracks I dig the most are The Night Starts Here, In our Bedroom After the War, Personal, and Take me to the Riot. I like Barricade, Life 2: The Unhappy Ending as well but I'm not as keen on the lyrics for Life 2. They're just too...I dunno, self-aware maybe?

But still, The Night Starts Here ranks up with the best of Stars for me, especially the more I listen to it. I'll have to give the whole album a few more whirls I guess before I pass final judgment but right now it's just decent.
