It opens wider next weekend. Be sure to check it out. This year's best so far and one of the best coming-of-age films ever. If you've seen it, discuss it here.

I really wanna see this film. Reviews have been great and the trailer is very interesting. Hopefully it'll hit my neck of the woods sometime soon.

The movie has finally opened in a theater near me, so I'll probably see it this weekend. It looks really good. The positive notices have been encouraging.

Original version has a lot of explicit sex scenes. I'm fearing that the film has been brutally butchered, since MPAA is scared to death of sex and nudity. Happily finnish cencorship is not hard at all on sexuality.

Anyway, I have understood that the sex scenes are very important to the film and it might suffer artistically because of the censorship, and a piece of T&A always makes a film better...

Rather than getting an X-rating from the MPAA, they decided not to have it rated. The only drawback here is that certain theater chains don't release unrated films. I think United Artists is one of them. Correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, I saw the film at the Chicago Film Festival. It seemed pretty raw and explicit then. But whether the film being released is going to be tamer or not, it should still remain one of the funniest, most poignant coming-of-age films ever. I noticed that Ebert and Roeper gave it "Two thumbs Way Up!" Good for them.

Just a reminder. Check this gem out. You won't regret it. I plan to see it again and maybe write a longer review.

I just caught the movie at my local art house and I thought it was interesting. I can't comment further on that because I didnt exactly "get" the overall point of the film.

This film has been praised (deservedly so) for two reasons: it had the balls to shoot and keep its steamy content and it portrayed life as realistically as possible on the big screen. I agree with Tuukka in thatif this film were to be edited by censors at all, it would have been a completely different story.

Unfortunately, by looking at it from a literary perspective, I did not really see much going for it. The writing and character development were great and the performances were incredible, but I dont really see where Director Alfonso Cauron (Great Expectations, A Little Princess) was trying to take me.

I will definitely give it another shot when it comes out on DVD, but until then, I will not be able to effectively rate it.

Max, I think it is interesting to see a movie that you actually did enjoy. If you have the time, I would be very interesting on seeing why you loved this film.

It's been several months since I've seen it. So I can't really go into a detailed analysis right now. Can I get back to you sometime this weekend. I'm seeing it again either tonight or tomorrow night.

I just saw this movie last night. Quite an interesting flick. I too am glad Cuaron had the cajones to keep the sex scenes. The theater I saw it in was pretty full, and nobody walked out during those scenes, so I guess they weren't bothered.
As for the film, it's basically a road trip, highlighted by good acting and raunchy dialogue. I liked it, but I'll have to give it some time to sit in my mind before I give a full review.

Saw it again over the weekend and loved it even more. Don't have time for a full-length review. Briefly, the movie works on several levels for me. As a road movie, it gives us a wonderful snapshot of Mexico. A voiceover narration also provides subtle commentary on its politics and class distinctions. As a coming-of-age movie, it offers sly observations on adolescent behavior and human nature in general. The sex is raw, realistic and erotic. The raunchy dialogue is funny and witty. Gorgeously shot and brilliantly acted, Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN is an exhilarating celebration of Mexico, life and humanity.

Max -- I appreciate that you took the time to leave your thoughts here. I could definitely see that this movie could become more clear with more viewings. Unfortunately, I felt that its message was a bit muddled. Both you and Roger Ebert mentioned that the setting in Mexico was a character in itself. (If anything, Sex was personified more than anything). Unfortunately, I didn't really see that Mexico played much of a role in the bulk of the story. Based on my understanding, all I saw was a coming of age story about sexual innocence and growing up. Like I said before, I have to see the movie again (I am pretty certain that I missed a few things), but this is my initial opinion...

What I enjoyed the most about it was the way Cuaron seamlessly blended the different aspects. Like you, what I noticed the most the first time I saw it was the coming-of-age and sexual awakening parts of the movie. Those alone made the movie worth seeing. The second time I paid more attention to the background. The colorful details of the Mexican countryside were just as fascinating. The voiceover narration added depth and poignancy to the wild shenanigans by revealing some of Mexico's ugly past. Last but not least, both viewings showcased some great acting. Haven't seen AMORES PERROS. Gael Bernal (Julio) is supposed to be great in that one, too. I may now check it out just for him.

Unfortunately it is not out here in Finland. BTW, you should definitely check the excellent Amores Perros.

One of the lead actors stars in both films, correct? Do they have similar subject matter?

Haven't seen AMORES PERROS. But based on the IMDB they're two completely different subject matters, plot-wise and thematically.

Forget the other board. This is the real deal.
