I came across this in one of Ebert's books and thought I would share it. Quite an interesting list...

1. Horse Theif
2. The Thin Red Line
3. A Borrowed Life
4. Eyes Wide Shut
5. Bad Lieutenant
6. Breaking the Waves
7. Bottle Rocket :D
8. Crash (Croenberg)
9. Fargo
10. Malcolm X
10. Heat
tie for 10th place

I guess Horse Theif came out in 1986 but wasnt released in the States until the early 90s.

I remember listening to him and Ebert giving their Top 10 list of the 90's on the show all the time.

I always thought he had Bottle Rocket at the top of his list, which I thought he said in the "NExt Scorsese" article in Esquire. No bother; it's an interesting list. The only one that I wouldn't have expected is Eyes Wide Shut, wchich I love, but just don't see that often on best of lists.

Are these his favorite American films, or just films in general of the 90's?

Pretty sure films in general of the 90s - Horse Thief is a foreign film.

Oh, shit...I'm glad to know that my local library actually HAS the Horse Thief -- it's a beat up crappy VHS copy, but it's a copy nonetheless. I was always curious about his heralding of it all those years ago, it just popped into my mind.

Very great list.

Marty has great taste. Heat and Bad Lieutenant are awesome.

I'm very suprised at the mention for Cronenberg's Crash. I still need to see it, but I guess this gives me more motivation

I always thought it was second to Blood Simple.

Crash is my favorite Cronenberg film ever. it gets a bad rap.

I've never seen a movie deal with addiction in a better way.

Reqieum for a dream gets the runner up prize though.

Breaking the waves is top notch as well.

Nice list.

I'd take Goodfellas over pretty much every movie on that list. :)

Pretty good list, but no Boogie Nights?! For shame.

Espcially since some of it was influenced by Goodfellas.
