Gibson for me. I like both very much but Gibson is in my top 5 Cruise is not.

Cruise

Neither are in my long list of favorite actors, but I do tend to favor Cruise over Gibson. And Cruise's "sins" or whatever you want to call it, are far less aggregious than Gibson's.

Cruise. As much as I can't stand him and hate the whole scientology thing, he was incredible in MAGNOLIA, EYES WIDE SHUT and COLLATERAL.

My favorite Cruise performance (Collateral) trumps my favorite Gibson performance (Lethal Weapon).

I love Mad Mel, though.

Tom Cruise -- annoying, yes, but not as irritating to me as Gibson, plus he's given some good performances.

I'm a big fan of both. But I like Cruise a little more.

Cruise is way more annoying, but he can at least act well in most of his roles. Plus, I'm Jewish so I have more of a thing against Gibson.

I have a problem with people who tell others that they don't know the history behind something when they're being beaten in an argument, as if they knew for fucking sure. Somebody getting wasted and going on a racist rant (which I've done before and it doesn't mean a thing) doesn't bother me that much. Then again, I felt better about myself when I learned that Tom Cruise was my height, because I always felt so much shorter than everyone else and Tom Cruise projects himself as being a lot taller. Plus, Cruise has starred in some great movies.

I guess Gibson by a tiny little hair.

If anyone cares enough to read, I would like to take this opportunity to add my opinion about Gibson being called an anti-semetic. This all stems from The Passion of the Christ. Do you realize that he's never been accused of anti-semitism until he made that movie? Now why would someone who hated Jews with his whole being who has been in Hollywood for the last 25 years just now be accused? You'd think it would've shown long ago. The Passion was based on biblical text. He did not add anything to insult anyone. He even left a certain quote out because he knew it would offend the Jews. Now about his drunken rantings: I completely understand why Jews are pissed at him. I would be mad too if he started bashing Christianity. And I also believe that those accusations aren't just babbling. I think he was very upset at the Jewish community at the time because of all the flack he was getting about the Passion. He did have some intrinsic anger towards them and it came out while drunk. But to say he is anti-semetic and hates Jews is seriously over reaching. He's worked with many Jews all of his career, no one's ever accused him until he made the Passion.

So my answer is Gibson, Tom Cruise is a good actor but he just irritates me. Plus, I'm a little partial since Gibson happened to direct and star in my favorite movie.

They are both amazing. Cruise always delievers and nobody can say gibson is a bad director. His movies (while extremely violent) are beautiful.

"F*****g Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Gibson then asked the deputy, "Are you a Jew?"

I don't care how drunk you are, when you open your mouh you mean what you say, alcohol is not a damned scapegoat.

That being said I can't stand either ones public personality but both for some wierd reason have talent.

People say crazy shit that they don't mean while drunk. Like when Elvis Costello was overheard calling Ray Charles a "blind, ignorant nigger" when he was completely trashed at a bar....despite the fact that he's always worked with black artists and is close friends with many of them. It may not be a scapegoat 100% but drunk talk rarely reflects the true personality of someone. Gibson is a huge dick when it comes to his Catholocism, though.

I don't care about actors' personal lives/opinions/religion, etc.

If I had, I wouldn't have loved movies at all.

Mel Gibson is a great filmmaker, and he's one of my all time fav actors, so my vote went to him.

Cruise's personal life annoys the hell out of me every time I hear it. Gibson's doesn't, even when he occasionally lets his mouth slip on something stupid. Even then, I've long forgiven him for his drunken ranting... People say shit when they're drunk, it happens, and usually they regret it.

Gibson wins.

His father believes the Holocaust never happened. In all likeliness, it was more than just heavily exaggerated anger about the controversy of The Passion of the Christ.

I think the real question is which South Park episode satirizing these two characters do you prefer. Ha ha. The Passion of the Jew or the episode where Tom Cruise refuses to come out of the closet? Well I thought they both sucked but Passion was the worst of the two. Couldn't understand all the hype behind that episode. It just wasn't funny. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

I agree. He's stated that he doesn't share his father's stance, and I believe him. I also believe that the controversary probably stirred up feelings that he may have had and worked against in throughout his life - remembering that racism is a hatred taught, passed down from parents to children. While Gibson may not have hated any individual Jew simpyly for being jewish, he's held some racism against the Jews as a whole due to his father's influence.

While en vino est veritas doesn't always hold up when someone sobers up, in this case, I think Gibson's drunken ramblings did reveal this ugly truth about him - again giving him some question of doubt as to much he might have worked against it in his personal life.

Still, just because he was drunk, should not allow anyone to just shrug off what he said. Racism is not to be tolerated in any form from anyone.

Cruise is actually one of the best actors working today while Gibson is merely a good actor. Also, Cruise's "problems" all relate to his personal life and don't really offend me. He's got a crazy religion that makes him believe crazy things, but so does like 90+% of the world. Gibson on the other hand is actually a bad person who has despicable beliefs and has tried to inject them into his movies.

So definitely Cruise on this one, though they've both made a lot of movies I love.

gibson is the better actor and cruise is the better person

the only really good movie i can think of with cruise is rain man. and i think hoffman might have caried him a bit

what you say when drunk is forgivable is crap. they dont forgive people for vehicular homiside when they were drunk. you get drunk and forget that other people can hear you. he meant what he said however he might not have meant to say it.
