I just found out about this couple minutes ago. The famed foreign Oscar winning film Burnt By The Sun director has been at work not only with a sequel to the original, but also a famous Sydney Lumet classic "12 Angry Men"

This is his production company's website. I dug up a bit more and apparently it's coming out in September 2007

The main 12 actors are composed of some Russia's finest, as well as Nikita Mikhalkov himself.

It's updated to fit the crisis in Chechnya, and the 18-year old boy is now Chechen, there will be scenes of battle but they are served as flashbacks to the boy, etc.

I for one am interested, Mikhalkov is the equivalent of Spielberg (minus special effects movies) or any other great filmmaker so I have full faith.

But I have to ask now, what are everyone else's thoughts on this?

I have never seen the original but am pretty surprised that I haven't heard about this earlier. It's actually one of the few films from back then that I wouldn't mind checking out as usually I don't watch movies from beyond the 70s. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Flashbacks of war dealing with the boy? Wasn't one of the big reasons 12 Angry Men is so memorable is because just about the whole movie is set in the jury room? It's not really about the defendent, it's about the jurors, and how being in that room affected their perspectives on race, tolerance, and other things

I know as much as you do, except what was written. But as far as I know it's keeping with the original, entirely in one room - but I also read that when they wrote the script they came with something original as well. Don't know whether the flashbacks are throughout the film or just one scene.

The courtroom drama genre was written and defined with the original "12 Angry Men". Does this mean the ultimate closure of the genre, re-making the movie that started it all? And haven't we gotten more than tired of courtroom dramas of late? I mean come on! Alright, so A Few Good Men, The Firm, Amistad and Runaway Jury stand out, recently. But come ON, we GET IT!

I don't think 12 Angry Men can be considered courtroom, since it doesn't take place IN a courttroom, just a simple room filled with 12 guys, discussing a case.

You're forgetting The Verdict by the way...

Well, 12 Angry Men already has been remade once, although it was on HBO, but still a pretty good movie that kept the original's theme. I don't know too much about the crisis in Chechnya and whatever politics, if any, are involved. Might be interesting to see, if only out of curiosity.

It might be interesting to see a Russian remake of the classic. And it is a classic!! I'm not familiar with the Russian director, but it still sounds intriguing. I never saw the HBO remake though.

I agree that the movie is really only about those 12 men and not the defendant. I hope they don't change the main story too much.
