These 3 all came from the actors studio and essentially came up in the same time period (50s)
Who is your favorite of the 3?

While Brando was DEFINITELY an actor's actor, I adore Newman because he's just so... well... he's wonderful.
Both have pretty decent filmography, but Brando's a bigger icon, but then again, yeah Paul's sweet.

Brando is definitely the bigger icon in the film world but I dont know about American Popular Culture. Paul Newman is certainly a loved actor and I would think just as loved as Brando. Brando will go down as the GREATER actor probably (and there are NOT too many you can say that about when talking about Paul Newman) but I think Newman will go down as the bigger superstar and more popular actor. JUst my opinion though.
Plus Marlon Brando was a fucking asshole in real life. He had his moments were he was very funny but overall I thought his behavior on the sets of Apocalypse Now and Superman was FUCKING RIDICULOUS
Newman I think is a great guy and a hero to me.
But hey thats just me!

I wouldn't go as far as to say Brando was an asshole in real-life. He could be extremely high maintenance, to say the least, on the sets of films in his later years, but in his real-life he was actually a pretty good guy. He fought hard for civil liberties in the 70's for blacks and especially Native Americans, look at the '72 Osacrs. Plus, anybody who knew him say he was a very warm-hearted man who loved his family. So in that respect he wasn't an asshole, but a good man. But yes he was not good to be around on film sets. A great look at Brando is the documentary on him presented by TCM in May.

Yes you are right I should not have said asshole but anyone who shows up on sets without reading the scripts and a large amount overweight is atleast more then someone that can be difficult on set. Thats just wrong.
Newman is the man.
I don't know whom of the other two I think is more overrated, but I'd say it would be James Dean. At least Brando has some memorable work. Dean is some punk ass that died young driving too fast and didn't really leave much of a resume' to speak of. I never understood the fascination.

I agree with you on that front. Even though I do think his performance in Apocalypse Now is great, what he did on the set and his preparation for the film just isn't kosher, no matter who does it.

One thing we definitely agree on Joker is.....Brando is fucking awesome in Apoc Now. Probably my favorite part of it! And the movie is in my top 15 so thats kind of a big deal to me lol

They're all brilliant.
Although Brando was definitely not the first method actor, he's pretty much proof that method is the way to go. His eventual weight gain, slovenly appearance, and rude nature was probably due to mental insecurities he developed by acting in those kinds of roles. Plus, his performance in Last Tango in Paris has no equal because it's totally mindblowing.
Paul Newman is not only a phenominal actor, but his presence is simply amazing. Like Bogart, Cagney, and Cooper, his presence fills the screen. He's always on key.....he never overacts or underacts. Definitely a legend. And, as most people here have said, his salsa is fucking awesome.
James Dean didn't star in a lot of movies, but the few roles he had make his legend totally worthy. Despite the image we get of James Dean in our heads, he was a very versatile and gifted actor. In life he may have lived more like his character in Rebel Without a Cause, but as far as acting goes he was something to behold. Plus, he was a really good guy in real life. Many of the people he worked with like Natalie Wood described him as a friendly gentleman, so he was a much softer person in real life than most people think....he was hardly a "punk ass".

I'm going with Brando just because of his work. Newman didn't have a ton of films that I enjoyed like Brando did. The Brando documentary on TCM was great. It gave me a better appreciation for his acting. James Dean had a lot of potential, but I geuss we'll never know what could have been....
