SNOW WHITE AND SEVEN SHAOLIN MONKS

Jet Li to Star in Disney Picture

Kungfu superstar Jet Li is going to collaborate with "Star Wars" lead Natalie Portman in a new Disney picture, the China news quoted a report in Hong Kong's Wen Wei Po newspaper as saying.

The report said the film is an adaptation of Disney's classic "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". It is set thousands of years after the original Snow White story, when the princess has reincarnated into a young woman, played by Natalie Portman.

Her evil stepmother wants to collect the seven pieces of her magic mirror to resume her power.

The Shaolin temple in central China, which has been protecting the mirror for thousands of years, sends seven warriors, led by Jet Li, to protect the mirror and the young woman.

Sources say the movie has a budget of 70 million US dollars and might be made by martial arts choreographer and film director Yuen Woo-ping.

What an odd yet totally kickass sounding premise. This is one I'll be following for sure.

Sounds pretty interesting. It's original, for a remake anyways. ;) I guess that is the best we can hope for these days.

I thought Jet Li wasn't starring in "epics" anymore. This sounds awfully epic-ish.

It's a little more complicated than that. He said he wouldn't star in any more wuxia films which is a very specific kind of epic movie (and definitely not one set in modern day like this is)...according to wikipedia, a "distinct quasi-fantasy sub-genre of the martial arts genre"...

I mean, he's also starring in Warlords and The Forbidden Kingdom, both of which are more epic than this movie will probably be...unfortunately, the way Fearless was marketed made a lot of people think Jet Li said that he was through with action movies, etc etc but I think it's probably easier if people just basically forget that anything was even said in the first place cause it's too hard to explain exactly what he said and it's a comment that somehow got overblown by the marketing dumbasses.

As for this, I heard about this project quite a while ago but this is the first time I heard about Natalie Portman or Jet Li being involved in it. That definitely piques my interest a lot more and to me, this is potentially the most interesting looking project out of Li's upcoming projects...(Forbidden Kingdom would've been easily except that they seem to be determined to make it horrible with the whole family-film thing)

Li is at his best when working with Yuen Wo Ping so that also makes this even better...my favorite Jet Li movie is probably The Tai-Chi Master which Yuen Wo Ping directed and Yuen Wo Ping has choreographed most of the best Jet Li films (Fist of Legend, Fearless, Danny the Dog, Once Upon a Time in China, etc) as well as The Matrix, Kill Bill, and Crouching Tiger

Uhhh . . . okay.

Reincarnated? Thousands of years after the original? So when the hell did the first one take place? Or is this one set in the future?

Sounds a little iffy if you ask me.

Wtf? Say that three times fast. My only apprehension is; A: It's a Disney martial arts flick and B: bigred760's issue with time line and setting.

All that aside if it's got Jet Li in it and Yuen Wo Ping choreographin’ then I'm there. Natalie and the story are just icing on the cake.

OMFG this just keeps getting better and better...

FRANCIS LAWRENCE has signed on to this project according to the JoBlo front page to direct (taking over from Yuen Wo Ping who will still be doing the martial arts choreography). Now I love Yuen Wo Ping and all but I think it'll be awesome to have Lawrence on board as director and Yuen doing what he's best at - martial arts choreography. It definitely seems like a win-win situation...while I had my problems with Constantine, I always thought Lawrence's work on it was excellent (I had more problems with the script) and I'm really pumped to see his work on I AM LEGEND so...this is pretty sweet.

Now I'm just curious if Natalie Portman and Jet Li are indeed on considering the front page JoBlo news didn't mention them at all...

Why am I getting a serious Around The World In 80 Days vibe about this?

Since she's been in the mood for evil roles lately, get Michelle Pfeiffer to play the evil stepmother and I'm 110% game for this. Although I'm already at 100% with Li and Portman alone.
