Plot Summary: "Rod Kimble, a self-proclaimed stuntman, is convinced he has bravery in his blood. He’s grown up believing he’s the son of Evel Knievel’s test-rider, a courageous stuntman who died in his prime. Rod is committed to fulfilling his father’s legacy. Only problem is--he sucks! Rod lives at home with his loving mom Marie, jerk of a stepfather Frank and nerdy stepbrother Kevin. He doesn’t have a job, and can usually be found doing stunts on his moped, attempting to jump over everything from milk trucks to public swimming pools. Rod and his team--Dave, the mechanic; Rico, the ramp builder and Kevin, the team manager/videographer--are inseparable. It’s almost like they share a brain. When Rod’s neighbor Denise joins the team, the group’s IQ virtually doubles. Rod remains optimistic in spite of the abuse he suffers from his stepfather. Frank has a penchant for beating the tar out of Rod, who just keeps coming back for more in the hopes of earning Frank’s respect by besting him in one of their regular knock-down brawls. When Frank gets sick and needs a $50,000 operation, Rod attempts to raise the money by undertaking his biggest stunt ever--jumping 15 buses, one more than Evel Knievel himself ever dared. After all, he’s got to get Frank all better so he can kick his ass! "

Watching the trailer for this before Transformers, was unbearable. Looks terrible...

Guess I'll be the one defending the film here.
Andy Samberg is the best thing to happen to SNL since... shit, it's hard thinking back that far. SNL has sucked for a while.
The show Samberg made with his compadres Jorma (co-starring here) and Akiva (directing) was amazing, and really deserved to be picked up (see: http://www.thelonelyisland.com/awesometown/). If Hot Rod can match it's hilarity, it will be a comedy for the ages -- that is, as long as you like Will Ferrell-style humor.
Plus, two of my critic buddies (whose opinions I trust dearly) said it was surprisingly great. So at the very least, I expect a fun time at the movies.

Andy Samberg is one of the defining reasons why SNL has become crap.

Right. Because before he came on board, it was soooooo good. Give me a break.
I'll retract everything I've said if you can find me just one SNL sketch in the past five years that rivals any of these:

The SNL digital shorts are HILARIOUS (the only things on SNL that make me really laugh) and this actually looks pretty hilarious IMO.

I'm surprised at the negativity for this movie. I thought it looked hilarious. And I know the audience I was with when I saw the trailer in the theater was laughing a lot too.

Looks so bad. Also bad is how I found Isla Fisher to be so seriously hot in Wedding Crashers and had hopes for her to sort of break out...but her choices in a movie like Hot Rod are pretty depressing.

This trailer didn't look funny at all. I can't believe Samberg is already getting big movie deals. He's the shows new Jimmy Fallon who in turn was the shows new Adam Sandler. Why isn't the MUCH funnier Bill Hader getting to star in feature films instead of playing secondary characters? Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

The thing is I actually think doing a movie about a stuntman could have been really funny. Samberg is just the wrong guy for the role. If this starred Chevy Chase back in his hey day I'm sure it would have been hilarious. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Chicago film critic Adam Fendelman of HollywoodChicago.com has published a new interview with “Hot Rod” star Andy Samberg. The full audio can be found here:

This confirmed what I was thinking. It was just a phone-in movie for Samberg and his friends to try and make the movie they actually want to do. They talk about Wet Hot American Summer, although I don't remember the director/writers doing what they did (then again they had some leverage, but with enough time these guys would have had the same).

This movie was 100 times better then I thought it was going to be. Seriously it surprised the shit out of me. The commercials made it look lame and pointless but this movie has a certain vibe to it that's really missing in most comedies nowdays. It is a total tribute to the cheesy 80's movies of days gone past and it's definetely unlike anything I've seen before. I can see how it could be compared to Napolean Dynamite and it's influence does show but this is a whole other tyhpe of comedy beast and I really hope the poor marketing doesn't sink this ship because it deserves to sail.

I'm still up in the air about this movie; it does look dumber than hell, but it's going to be mindless fun and I don't mind mindless fun. I might just wait for it on DVD, if at all.

This movie was friken hilarious! Def one of the funniest flicks of the year, it was way more than what the trailer showed and I really enjoyed it and had a blast watching it.

I can't believe what I have been reading in this thread. With positive remarks like these I would be willing to put my hatred for Andy Samberg aside and give this movie a viewing but I still would not spend money to do so. I must say I was really expecting a backlash in this thread though.Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Andy Sambergs skits on SNL are hilarious from Chronic of Narnia to Dick in a box.But can he make us laugh for a full 90 minutes?? Yes and no.I did find myself laughing like mad at the small town "Napolean Dynamite" like quirky characters. Some scenes just felt a bit to repetitive to get continuos laughs from me.I wish they could have come up with a stronger story ,because you can tell a lot was just thrown in as filler.Still Hot Rod has its moments scale of 1-10 a 7

the trailers looked decent, but i wasnt sure about it.. but i see everything, so i saw this tonight and...
this movie is fucking hilarious!
the script was written by Pam Brady who is one of the writers of South Park (Show and Movie) and Team America. And Samberg and crew reworked the ascript to make it their own, and it worked... it is fuckin hilarious!
go see htis flick, give it the $$ it deserves, cuZ it is hilarious

Yes. See this movie. It is so fucking funny. It might not be a high class comedy like Knocked Up but its REALLY good low class comedy which a lot of times can be extremely entertaining. If you decide not to see this movie you are missing out.
Cool Beans.

It's not laugh out loud hilarious but it is consistantly amusing and has an infectious energy about it.
Still wonder what Sissy Spacek is doing in this though. She has NOTHING to do in this movie.

Oh my GOD did this movie suck really badly.
Worst film I've seen this year. By far.
Just unfunny stupid joke after unfunny stupid joke.
The only real redeeming parts of this movie were the hot chick from Wedding Crashers and Will Arnett, who admittedly kicked major ass (although he got a criminally small amount of screen time).
Really bad movie, though. Really bad.

Awesome movie. If you like Samberg's humor from his SNL shorts you will probably really enjoy this movie. If you don't like Samberg already then I don't think this movie will win you over.
I liked the loose script and don't mind at all how some of the scenes just seemed like independent skits, like Bill Hader's acid trip, cool beans, or when they stood around the pool trying to all do impressions of a ringing bell.
8/10
had to go buy the dvd. This movie is corn, but is great. I loved the Lonely Island stuff, i had heard about them a few months before they all joined SNL, and this movie was full of their style. I cant believe people hated this movie, it's hillarious.
Cool Beans = scene of the year
