Will this bring Burton back to the dark side where he belongs? Well, he never really left his morbid, twisted sense of humor behind, but he's also been doing a lot of candy colored bloated attempts at blockbusters for the past couple of films, although this looks to be doing its best to portray Depp in a more frightening light than his recent turn as the goofy Cap'n.

Loving the poster, it's definitely boosting up my anticipation of this. I have no idea why but I didn't expect such a dark look (which is awesome) for this.
Did anyone else think of the place in Edward Scissorhands that Edward would hide out in when they saw this poster? I dunno but that was the first thing that came to mind...

The musical is f'in awesome by itself, but with the Burton touch, my oh my, it should be brilliant.
I too think it is a return to form for him.
Too often in the past has his talent been wasted on crap (like the Corpse Bride and Charlie).

Nice poster. the only way I know about the musical is Ben Affleck's kid in Jersey Girl really liked it and did for school.

What no, his Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is GREAT. His third best movie behind "Pee Wee's" and "Ed Wood".
I'm looking forward to this one too. Doesn't it cost 200 million?

This is probably one of the cooler posters i've seen in awhile for a movie.

I love that art work! It's strikingly grim, macabre, morbid, gothic, somber, mysterious, intriguing....and CLASSIC Burton. Can't wait for a trailer!

I really like the vintage Victorian look of the poster. Really helps create a sense of the atmosphere, or at least, what I hope it will be. This really has strong potential.

I haven't heard anything about it, budget-wise, but 200 million is a whole lot. It's not like this film is an f/x extravaganza.
Charlie isn't that bad, but it's certainly far from his best in my opinion.
Corpse Bride and Apes were certainly duds, can we agree there?
Top 5 for me:
1) Big Fish
2) Ed Wood
3) Edward Scissorhands
4) Sleepy Hollow
5) Beetlejuice
Haven't see Pee Wee for some reason.

I'm a huge, die-hard fan of Tim Burton and his work. That poster is AWESOME, and I hope to own it very soon.
I'm not familiar with the musical it's based on, but I am familiar with the works of Stephen Sondheim (Into the Woods, anyone?). I'll have to buy the Broadway musical album soon.

Depp looks like a cross between Beethoven and Cruella DeVil.
Also, can someone please explain to me what the hell took Tim Burton and Alan Rickman so long to work together?

The poster does look great. Dark and menacing. I'm not a fan of musicals but my 8th grade music teacher made us watch the one with Angela Lansbury and I actually loved it! I'm sure Depp will be great in the role. Nice to see him make a visit to his (NOES) horror roots again. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Burton is back in the game, darker, broodier and bloodier than ever. Will this be rated R? Burton doesn't have many films with that rating. This'll be interesting. He's also my favourite director, and I also have a soft spot for musicals, so this is like the most absolutely perfect match-up possible. I'm so excited for this!!!!!!!

Good news, fellow schmoes. Sweeney Todd's WIDE release has been moved up from Jan 11 (limited on 12/21) to Christmas Day! Oddly enough, that's also when Charlie Wilson's War comes out. Looks like it may be a VERY merry Christmas at the movies.:D

As much as I think Burton has lost his originality and has been relying on his bag of tricks since 99, I think it would be impossible for him to make a bad film out of this. I've seen the musical performed live and it's incredibly entertaining... if Burton keeps it intact with his flair for gothic art, I think this could turn out to be his better film since 99's Sleepy Hollow.
My ass will firmly be seated when this comes out.

I was wondering the same thing. His name is clearly not on the poster, but I remember hearing that he would be adapting the songs from the play (and probably adding an original underscore).
And btw, I REALLY think this`ll be R rated.

As a musical, the biggest danger is that the songs in this are not catchy at all. These are not the popular tunes of something like Chicago and that's really the biggest reason why the Chicago film worked so well.

i doubt they'd do that, as Paramount and DreamWorks are pushing Sweeney Todd for Oscar consideration. Plus, I think the pairing of Depp and Burton will still attract a lot of people.
Someone else mentioned the rating. I recall reading that it is indeed going to be rated R, but I don't know the specifics.

It was in Entertainment weekly that Tim Burton said that the movie is indeed rated R and is 75% a musical. And he also said he waited to release it on Valentines Day because it is a love story but the studio insisted a Christmas release date...

Before everyone lights torches and grabs pitchforks (no doubt an interesting image) over the recent ratings struggle between Burton and Warner Bros, let me emphasize a few facts that have been either overlooked or mentioned only in passing:
1) the source for all this hooplah, the Daily Mirror, is a British publication that is more of a TABLOID (capitalized for emphasis) than an actual newspaper.
2) WB has no jurisdiction whatsoever over Sweeney Todd's production or release within the US, as it is a Paramount-DreamWorks production. WB, however, MAY be the international distributer, so that may have an impact on other nations, but not the US.
3) The actual article says nothing about R or PG-13, but rather two UK ratings known as 18 (closer to an NC-17) and 15 (closer to an R).
Let's wait for independent verification (separate from the Mail or the studios) before we start a riot. If it's true, then have at it!

I think Tim Burton has a big enough following to do good box office on an R. Hell, he'll probably do better, all the goth nerds will cream themselves.
Burty's R! Ohmigod!
gyro_44
08-27-2007, 09:10 PM
Burton's Sleepy Hollow was very R-rated (and made plenty of coin too), I hope this one turns out to be as well.
The studio is totally hoping to capitalize on Depp's enormous teenage girl fanbase, especially right after Pirates. I don't know why else they would protest.
