View Full Version : Abbreviating Movie Titles (or, AMT)

This might have been covered before, but I didn't see it when I searched for it.
I'm not talking about anyone in particular, but it irritates the shit outta me when people are posting about movies and abbreviate the title. It's even worse when another movie is referenced and it is abbreviated too. Maybe I'm slow, but I end up wasting as much time as it would take to read the post trying to decipher the abbreviations.
Some examples:
POTCDMC: Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest (all 3 movies have gotten this treatment...I can decipher POTC quickly enough, but why not just call 'em 1, 2, or 3?
ESOTSM: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (this one was one of the references I talked about, and came way out of left field. It took me 10 minutes just to figure out what the f*ck they were talking about.)
DOTD: Dawn of the Dead? Day of the Dead? Take your pick.
LFODH: Live Free or Die Hard (are you f*ckin' kidding me? Die Hard 3 was too hard to type?)
Please keep in mind that the abbreviations I'm talking about do not reference a name in the thread title, but just movies mentioned in the thread.
Am I alone in this?

I've never had that much difficulty deciphering abbreviations of movies. But there is usually some hint as to what they're talking about. With stuff like all the variations on LOL, I'm clueless.
Personally, I don't usually use abbreviations. I find it just looks nicer all typed out in the first place.

It doesn't bother me when people do it, but I admit that I've been confused once or twice about a few movies that were abbreviated. I don't remember which ones right now - this was a while ago.

Good rant.
For the longest time, I had no clue what ESOTSM meant but then it hit me one day.
For the most part I have no problem when people abbrevate movie franchises like Lord of the Rings or Pirates but sometimes it gets ridiculous.

When it's a shitload of letters, it is annoying. (When you're on a website and have to type in LOTR: ROTK: STDDBS = Lord of the RIngs: Return of the King: Special Two DVD DIsc Box Set.
But the abbreviations are a hip way of getting that info out to the masses in a quick fashion.
Just like Kentucky Fried Chicken is now KFC.
It's hip and fast and packs more grease than a Jiffy Lube garage but it gets the product across to the consumer.

I don't really mind these but the one that pissed me off was TMNT. Just say Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It's better and way more fun to say than TMNT.
I guess it isn't extreme enough...

Speaking of, am I the only one here who actually pronounces abbreviated titles?

Sooooo many of these bother me.
PA - Police Academy
TIITC - The Indian in the Cupboard
B - Blade
3F3F - 3 Fast 3 Furious
S - Speed
S - Saw
S2 - Scream 2
PSPJD - Pauly Shore Present's Jury Duty
JATGP - James and the Giant Peach
KIOS - Kickin it Old School
BIOYA - Bring it on Yet Again
PSPSIL - Pauly Shore Present's Son in Law
Is it too much to ask to just spell out the titles people?

I use them sometimes, but only when the actual name has been referenced before.
I hate it when people do it without referencing.

That is why we in the lawyering community spell a term out at the beginning and then in parentheses put the abbreviation. For example, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ("POTC 1"). Then for the rest of that post, when referencing it, you can call it by the defined term aka the abbreviation.

See, that would be perfectly acceptable to me. If the movie title is previously spelled out in its entirety, then that's no problem...I would at least have a reference point. The problem I have is when someone posts "...this movie is just as cool as (insert looong abbreviation here)" with no explanation of what exactly they are talking about. It kinda feels like when everybody gets the joke and you're still struggling with the punchline.

No, I do it too. It's always funny when you refer to "rahtjah" (ROTJ...Return of the Jedi) and all you see are blank stares. It makes you feel superior...or just extremely nerdy; I haven't decided yet. Leaning towards nerdy.
