View Full Version : What the fuck is up with Starz?

Starz, I first thought would be a awesome movie channel, I mean it has most of my favorite movies and it sucks completely. I mean, they run the same fucking movie every fucking day. They don't air anything from the 90's or the early 2000's. They just air movies from the last year or two. I mean, is that channel so fucking small that it cannot air other movies? It's fucking ridiculous and I got bored really fucking fast.

The biggest reason to get the movie channels these days is for the TV shows ironically enough.

I totally agree. I hardly even watch that channel anymore. Hell, they're STILL playing Hitch, Stealth and Dark Water every frickin' day! Get some new movies (or better yet, some good older ones) or shut down!

So, I was sitting around Saturday night a few weeks ago and I turned on Starz for their "Saturday Premiere".
Remember when HBO used to debut their movies on Saturday nights and you really were sitting around like "I CAN'T WAIT! THIS IS GONNA ROCK!"?
So I've got my evening snack, get comfortable for the movie.
PG-13. Fine.
Surround sound available. Good to know.
"Stick It"
Wait.
I had my intellectual mouth watering and I get a suck ass cheerleader movie that bombed in the box office?
FIrst run movies, my ass, McBain!
Unless you mean, "people ran from the theater when they first saw it".
And as bad as "Stealth" and "The Cave" were, you'd really think they'd stop airing out their failures on spending money for new movies.

Never bother with the crap cable channels. I gave up about 8 years ago when HBO would run ID4 on a six-hour rotation (love the movie, I just like to watch something DIFFERENT every day, y'know?)...:D

I used to have an illegal hookup to Pay Per View, so naturally they played movies over and over and OVER AND OVER. But the thing is, I actually didn't mind. I must've watched Hollow Man, like, 6 times. But it's a whole different matter when it's free I guess.

I completely agree. My mom for some reason opted to have Starz because she asked somebody who hooked Dish up for her what their recommended channel would be and the dipshit recommended Starz as the best movie channel. I hope he gets fired and loses custody of his children.

I don't see what the big hatred for Stars is. I love Stars and HBO because then I can watch movies I missed in theaters without having to go out and rent them or us annoying Netflix.

Netflix is annoying? it's a godsend.

Starz usually plays films i'm too embarrassed to rent, buy or put on my netflix queue but have a slight curiously about, usually pertaining to "how bad can it really be"?

I don't like Netflix or what it stands for. I don't like online renting at all.

That is an asinine comment. I don't rent from Netflix either. Not out of any hatred towards them, it just hasn't peaked my interest. Maybe later.
Anyway, I didn't realize that to be a movie buff you had to have a Netflix membership. I thought that a love and knowledge (borderline obsession) of movies was enough. My mistake, I guess.

fuck ALL cable channels they show the movies in FOOL's FRAME and people actually pay for that shit. Keep the cable for reception, old shows and rent the movies as the director intended them to be seen

What is it that they "stand for" exactly?
I'm all for avoiding lines at video stores and having access to films that aren't new releases. Rental chains don't invest in the "classics" or "older films" nearly as much as Netflix. I'm all for being able to get rentals without having to politely say 'no' to three different promotional offers (eg: combo packs, 'rewards programs", rental combos, etc..)
Video Rental stores do tend to have a decent library, but it is nowhere near as extensive as the online rental chains. And the main reason for this is because of the fact that most of the revenue for rental chains are from sales/rentals of new releases and the junk people buy along with their new releases (eg: popcorn, soda).

I don't like stars either.
My cousin has a service with his cable company that seems really cool, though. He has Cinemax, Stars, HBO, and Showtime. In addition to getting the normally scheduled programming, he also has an additional "on demand" service in which he could select any of the movies that a specific channel has rented the rights to.
If, for instance, Cinemax has the rights to "Cinderella Man", then he can select it and watch it. He could also pause, fast forward, and rewind the movie.
This is interesting because this could very well be a direction that cable heads toward in the future. But we'll have to see. I don't know if companies will like it if they got paid less for movies that bombed hard in the box office. Currently, the studios make a pretty healthy sum for selling the rights of their crap to the premium cable channels.

I'm biased due to the fact that I have two friends who run seperate video stores themselves under their own names and I hate online renting for the very reason that it threatens their existence. I prefer going to movie stores for the same reason I prefer going to movies with friends, I love the social experience, I love chatting with them about a movie and getting a few opinions on the movie I'm renting.
Online renting threatens that experience, no reason for anyone to go to the store anymore so the store will eventually cease to exist. Small time problems like "waiting in line" and "saying no to promotional offers" are quite trivial problems that don't bother me at all. I like talking to the people at the cash register.
And as for IronMonkey, I don't care whether I see a movie in full screen or wide screen, the quality of the movie isn't going to change with the format change. Most of the movies I wait to see on a station such as Stars or HBO are movies that I didn't go see in theaters because they didn't quite fully interest me and I am curious to see how good they were. Sometimes this ends up leading to me liking the movie and going out and buying the movies or not. The movies I rent are usually movies that I simply didn't have the time to see but were extremely interested in, and usually I rent about 5-6 movies at a time.
And once again, as for the person who said I wasn't a film buff for hating Netflix, please, do explain, because I still don't quite understand what you mean.
P.S.: I'm also a huge fan of the On Demand feature as well, I have comcast cable and it's an excellent feature, especially for stations such as Encore, HBO or Stars. I can basically pick any movie they have the rights to at the time to watch. I love it.

I sell cable and satelite plus phone and internet for my job and I normally don't recommend any particular premium channels because people usually know what they want. You get most people wanting HBO (they do have some of the better TV shows) although I am Weeds fan which is on Showtime. If they were to ask me what station I would recommend I would recommend Encore. It has a lot of older movies plus most cable networks (brighthouse, time warner) only charger $2.95 as an addition digital tier for it. Or if your a big movie fan I recommend Direct TV which as an awesome promotion going on right now, 250 channels, HBO, Cinemax, Starz and Showtime mulitiplexes, and NFL Sunday Ticket for $49.99 (then again thats are special promotion which is normally $20 cheaper than what you see on TV ads). The promotion started today, I sold 7 direct Tvs alone for it today.

I think Starz (and HBO) is an excellent channel for seeing movies you missed in theaters. And it does run some older films, Heat and The Sixth Sense as of now. But neither Starz nor HBO seem to actually care what recent films they're showing. The type of extremely low-brow cinematically retarded person who likes constantly broadcasted movies like Date Movie likely isn't interested in paying extra bucks just for channels completely full of movies.
Personally, I prefer Showtime and especially Cinemax. They're not afraid to show movies from before 1990. But maybe that's just me and my lack of faith in most modern movies.
In any case, with the partial exception of Showtime, they can all get fucked for having only one channel in HD, thusly showing in fullscreen (a.k.a. raping) most of the movies. Starz to a somewhat lesser extent because they have some of their movies available in widescreen On Demand.
And on the topic of Netflix, I'm in constant use of it but I understand LordSimen's point. I myself use Netflix to rent films I usually couldn't find at Blockbuster and that only a video store clerk that was cloned from the DNA of Quentin Tarantino would have probably seen. Unless of course it's a more open-minded elderly person, but they never seem to come off as the very warm, talkative type. Neither do I, frankly.

Netflix is a godsend. I was kind of forced to rely on Netflix though because years ago my local Blockbuster closed down. So Netflix became the only way I can rent movies.
Now I can't imagine life without netflix.

I can understand that. Unfortunantly I live in an area where there are no "mom and pop" video stores anymore. Blockbuster saw to that about 10 years ago. So I basically choose between blockbuster/hollywood video or netflix. I enjoy the social factor but not at those places. None of the employees know shit about movies and half hate there jobs, ie. customers, so for me netflix is a no brainer. I get where your coming from though. I remember quite well the days of "Windfern video"(the old neighborhood video store) and would want to defend that if I could.

I can definitely sympathize with the death of mom 'n' pop video stores. I was always able to find obscure movies there that Blockbuster/Hollywood would never allow to sully their shelves. I really miss being able to go to the little video stores; every time you went in a new one it was like Christmas all over again...you never knew what you were going to find.
Anyway, STARZ sucks. :D

The HDTV I picked up a few months ago has been getting someone's PPV channels. Mostly it's porn being watched, but recently it's been nothing but rotations of Astronaut Farmer and Ernest Goes to Jail....
Yeah, and STARZ does suck. I remember a free preview weekend years ago when all they showed was the craptacular Daylight and Dante's Peak.
