I've got no idea on this one. I'm going because someone else is paying, but I literally have no idea what to expect from this movie. The trailers look horrible, but a lot of people are screaming mismarketing and say it's brilliant. Anybody read the source material or seen the movie yet? It comes out this next Friday the 10th.

I like how your explanation of Chuck and Larry's bad reviews were critics "not having the right mindset" but since this is actually getting good early reviews, it's the most overrated movie of the year. Alrighty.
I actually think this looks fairly interesting overall and I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I can't wait. Neil Gaiman is a GENIUS, and I love the novel Stardust. He's given his seal of approval to the film, and the cast and early word are all fantastic.

Can't garner any interest in it...dig Pffifer and enjoy seeing her back in the mix of things but its just not my cup of tea.
I've yet to see 1 marketing ad for it,too. Predicting a bomb, depending on the budget of course (though the cast alone had to be a nice chunk with DeNiro & Pffiefer.God I hate spelling her name.

ricky gervais being in any movie is a disaster,i wonder if he's playing an obnoxious charictor who deludes himself with self importance when really he's a bit of a geek, that would be such a new role for him.the saying one trick pont was invented for that man.

Best thing Gervais has done is his old 80s New Wave none-hit wonder band,Seona Dancing (yes i'm serious...he was actually in an 80s band and had 4 good tracks, then never did anything again).

First of all, what in God's name are you people talking about, Ricky Gervais being in a film is a BAD thing??? Gervais is one of the funniest people in the world. Guess some folks have never seen Extras!
Secondly, I am very interested in the film because it's directed by Matthew Vaughn, who made the super slick and cool Layer Cake. Sign me up for anything else he does, right now. And while I've never read much Neil Gaiman, he sounds like a very cool author.
Some of the trailers make the film look a bit dated and silly, and I'm not sure it will find much of an audience, but I think it will be better than everyone thinks it's going to be.

I'm getting a kind of Princess Bride vibe coming off this regarding the humour it is displaying. I will be there front and center opening weekend as I have all the faith in the world in anything Neil Gaiman.

Gervais being in anything is a bad thing
Gervais is one of the funniest people in the world. Guess some folks have never seen Extras!
no he really isn't, The Office is one of the worst shows i've tried to watch and while Extras is a hell of a lot better it still isn't very funny
it's directed by Matthew Vaughn
oooo, didn't pay any attention to who the director was when i checked out the info on this film, while i didn't think Layer Cake was great i did like his direction so that has me slightly more interested in this

have seen extra's and whilst its funnier than the office gervais is still the weakest of the main charictors, and he is still basicaly playing david brent,as he did in night at the museum and for your consideration,as i said he is a complete one trick pony, the most overated comedian i have ever seen and imo a wanker whenever i have seen him being interveiwed on anything.

must say the movie itself looks ok,gervais is listed way down on cast list so hopefully not in it much, and i liked layer cake so this could be ok.

na not bitter just dont get the big love for gervais,he is a decent writer, but the acting side he is useless, and as i have pointed out he basically plays the exact same charictor in everything he does, watch the office, extras, night at the museum and for your consideration and he play's an almost identical role in an identical style, and not only that when he appears on any tv shows or live events he still acts in the same way,so to me in all the roles he is acctually playing himself an obnoxious little man with delusions of grandure.

Way better than I ever thought it would be. I have never read the book and I still found this quite the little movie. The CGI could have been way better, but I am happy with DeNiro playing a "whoopsy" pirate with a bad reputation....

Stardust was better than Eragon. Granted, that isn't saying too much. There were a few laughs along the way, mostly from the ghost princes who where quite charming. The plot is so so, but the movie really shines with Claire Daines' cute as hell performance. The action was pretty good too, I especially liked the scene where the body of Septimus was used via a voodoo doll to fight. Overall another forgettable fantasy movie. Damn you Lord of the Rings for setting the standards so high! *shakes fist*

I really enjoyed it. Nothing that I will remember for a long time, but I had a good time watching it. I thought it had some big flaws. I really didn't get the point of the flying pirates subplot. It was just silly. Also, it takes a bit to actually get rolling. side from that though it had some nice action scenes and I loved the Happily Ever After ending. It was earned. Oh and Claire Danes was cute as button.
Its been mentioned before but the short fight with the reanimated vodoo guy was the highlight of the movie.
It was nothing amazing, but I really enjoyed it.

I can't believe I'm hearing all this Ricky Gervais bashing! Who care if he's a one trick pony? At least it's a good trick. Some celebrities don't even have that.
Also, he may seem like a dick in interviews, but since you've never met him, you can't know for sure. Maybe he acts that way on purpose. Or maybe he's just an ass. Who cares? He's not trying to be your friend or anything.
Even if you don't like Gervais, I bet you like the US version of The Office, am I right? Just think, without him, we would never have it. Certainly that qualifies for something.
Lastly, I'd just like to say, you guys talking about Extras being better than The Office are insane. I love and own both shows, but The Office is unbeatable.
OK, I'm done.

Even though he's only there for 5 minutes. He's obviously being pretty picky about his movie roles. And I don't see how you can say all his performances are the same. It makes me wonder how much you have really seen his tv shows.

Nothing amazing. It's like LOTR-lite. Personally, I also liked Eragon more. But it's light and enjoyable nonetheless. Loved Claire Danes here. Don't think I've liked her in anything this much since the short lived tv series My So Called Life. Charlie Cox is tramendously appealing. Robert De Niro is delightful and a hoot as a cross dressing pirate. And Michelle Pfieffer is wonderful as ever as an evil witch. Special effects and action scenes are decent. And the movie is just a real charmer. Nothing really more, nothing less.
7/10
On a side note, am I the only one getting tired of these kiddie fantasy flicks that are coming out. The only one that looks any good is The Golden Compass. But otherwise I yawn whenever I see trailers for The Seeker: The Dark is Rising, The Spider something Chronicles and The Sea Horse or whatever it's called. This is a subgenre that I hope dies real soon. I guess LOTR/Chronicles of Narnia are to be blamed for these movies.

I have been a fan of his tv work since the stuff he did on the eleven o'clock show, which I doubt they aired in the u.s. i have seen all his stand up dvd's both series of the office and Christmas specials , both of extras and pretty much everything he's done, night at the museum was shit and i Have not seen stardust. He's picky in that he's picking shit films.

How rude. Isn't anybody entitled to a fucking opinion anymore?
Calf happens to not be a fan and his reasoning appears to be more than justified.
Gervais is HUGELY overexposed in the UK, he DOES appear to have an inflated ego - whether this is part of the 'act' or not is another story - and the films he has appeared in have ALL been utter tripe...yes, that includes Jumanji 2.
Now I am a BIG fan of Ricky's TV work/stand-up....The 11 O'Clock Show, The Office, Extra's, Animals, Politics, but I'm the first to admit that his acting leaves a lot to be desired. I also think that Stephen Merchant is the more gifted comedian of the pair, and he has the likeability factor in spades.
Ricky appears to be morphing into an actual David Brent parody of late...his cringe-inducing skit at the tedious "Concert For Diana" was the final nail in the coffin for a great many.
I think Jim Shelley summed it up pretty well,
It's hard to say exactly when Ricky Gervais stopped being the endearing, ingenious wit behind The Office and became the tiresome embarrassment he is today. There were the endless, nauseatingly matey, appearances on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross; his mediocre episode of The Simpsons; his mutual appreciation society with Ben Stiller and Larry David.
Fawning anecdotes in which he would call Extras' guest Robert De Niro "Bob" were another giveaway. His cameo in A Night At the Museum (with Stiller) was sub-sitcom standard and, like The Simpsons, another example of him re-hashing Brent. After years refusing to "do" The David Brent Dance, these days you can hardly stop him.
He was at it again during The Concert for Diana, where the sight of Gervais dying on his feet confirmed his demise. Having been introduced by, you've guessed it, Ben Stiller, Gervais performed the never-knowingly-funny Brent number Free Love On the Free Love Freeway, before making a gag about global warming we've all made: "at least we're going to have brilliant summers from now on". Asked to wing it until Elton John was ready, the acclaimed stand-up floundered.
His appearance at Saturday's Live Earth concert only compounded his humiliation. He opened with a lame remark about the show's eco-conscious stars flying in by private jet - an irony already commented on by that acclaimed comic genius Simon Le Bon. Then it was a case of he doth protest too much, as he insisted he'd done Live Earth as a favour to Spinal Tap creators "Christopher" (Guest) and "Rob" (Reiner), and that he couldn't say no to the Diana concert because he'd been asked personally - by Wills and Harry.
And with that, Gervais and David Brent, whose capacity for ingratiating, excruciating embarrassment he made famous, finally became indistinguishable.
Anyway, I actually think this looks moderately entertaining...the presence of Gervais is neither here nor there. I'll probably rent it at some point.

Have you seen the episode of Alias he was in? That actually required actual acting and he was superb in that episode. His scenes with Victor Garber were undeniably the highlight of that great episode.
I don't understand the praise he's getting in this movie. It's certainly not a bad performance and I found his scenes to be amusing but hardly anything great.
However, I HIGHLY disagree that Gervias's acting leaves something to be desired because of his awesome work on the episode of Alias he was in.

I personally loved this film, but I felt the lead (whoever he is) kind of got overshadowed at times by all the other stars and could've bumped it up a bit.
Oh, and what was up with De Niro's "scene"? I'm fairly certain once you see the film you'll know what I mean. I'm not against them or anything, but that's kind of frightening.

I thought that they did a great job adapting Stardust to the screen. Very little of the story is missing and they did a great job keeping that fairy tale vibe resonating throughout the pic. It's a shame that this film is tanking on the box office front because I think it could garner a huge fan base from the non neil Gaiman fan side of the population if given the chance. I think this is going to be one of those flicks that bombs in the box office but rakes in the cash on dvd.
Next up Beowolf and then Coraline.
I really am digging this Gaiman inflitrates Hollywood roll right now.

And on the topic of Ricky Gervais, the man is funny. He might often play the same character as some one mentioned, but so do most comedy actors. The Office was excellent, The Office: An American Workplace was terrible. And Extras is good. He also rocks it stand up.

Ahh... how refreshing it is to see that Hollywood is still capable to produce such wonderful, fun, classic fantasy epics such as this one. It has everything - comedy and wit, broad overtones, epic filmmaking, great effects and acting, wonderful characters and concepts, and all packed in an immensely entertaining package. That said, it is depressing to see that films like this, reminiscent of The Wizard of Oz or The Princess Bride, don't have the power to make enough money in the box office for studios to justify further production. This film's box office failure is a bad sign for out-of-franchise fantasy films, which is a shame because Gaiman, Terry Pratchett and many others have some other fantastic fantasy works just itching to be made into fantastic films with the right budget and talent. And after the Harry Potter series is over and PJ delivers his two Hobbit movies, it looks like we won't have any quality fantasy movies to look forward to in the near future. And that's a shame.
RATING: 8/10.
