I know it's a little early for this thread, but I'm going crazy with anticipation for this movie, and the best way to deal with that is to talk about it with some fellow Schmoes.
This movie looks like it could be funniest movie in years. Looks funnier than Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin, Borat, Wedding Crashers, and it even looks funnier than some of the great 80's/90's teen sex comedies.
Can't fucking wait!

So far reviews have been very good. Comparisons to great Dazed and Confused, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High have been made.
And it should be quite authentic (dialouge etc.), as parts of it were written by Seth Rogen when he was in high school.

Rogen and writing partner Evan Goldberg starting writing this at age 13. I like Cera a lot and this looks like it'll be funny, but I think comedies are starting to get too long.

I am thrilled that there is a rated R comedy. Just like the greats of the 80's. There needs to be more of them... well, only if they are good ones I suppose. This one looks hilarious though.

I cant wait for this movie. Had an interesting experience last night at the theatre though. Came out of the Bourne Ultimatum and saw the poster for this. The wife was in the bathroom so I was trying to entertain myself, and read the MPAA list of what it has in it. Two things shocked me. First, "A image of fantasy/comic violence." What the heck is this? Plus the fact that they mention that there is only one. Its like saying there is nudity, but only one boob is shown.
Second thing, and this was a little odd. Did you guys know there is no nudity in this? Now I dont care, this bit of info doesnt change my opinion of the movie even one iota. I just assumed this entire time there there would be some, if not quite a bit, of nudity in this. I mean the whole thing seems to be about getting laid and being that girls one mistake. Just kind of wowed me. They have balls. There making a sex comedy with no sex. In fact, I actually want to see the movie even more now. Then again, now that I look I guess thats what the sexual content could mean. I just assumed its because they spent the entire movie talking about cock, balls, and boobs.

I've seen two pre screenings of it in Los Angeles...
Against Sunshine, Ratatouille and Once this could possibly be the best movie of the year. It's better than Knocked Up and the 40 Year Old Virgin. I'm sure it will be an instant classic. It's a perfect comedy. Good directing, hilarious acting and brilliant writing.
9.5/10 (this shocks me... i was expecting to dislike it... i hate every god damn movie I see.)

I'm really looking forward to this. I will hopefully be seeing this with some friends this saturday. I enjoy seeing comedies with a large crowd way more than in a empty theater, so seeing this opening weekend seems appropriate. I even have a quote in my sig from the previews for the movie. I guess all I can say is I am stoked.

I don't really go by reviews, but I really liked 30 old virgin and knocked up. I found the Wedding Crashers ok, thought no as good, but this looks like the kinda of film I might like, and I certainly love fast times at ridgemount high and dazed and confused,
But the big thing that seperates this from the high school movies of the 80's is that they actually have kids playing kids!
I admit that i'm warming to superbad now, though the first trailer was not great

I was looking forward to it until I saw a commercial that hailed it as if it will be the character-defining teenage film of the decade, and tongue in cheek or not (it really didn't seem like it was), it was really lame, I'll wait for DVD.

this will go down as this generations dazed and confused/fast tmes. The movie is damn funny and the script is golden. Just the way a high school comedy sholud be, watching the movie I felt all the awkwardness of my high school party experiences and what not.Rogen and hedar almost steal the show. Mclovin however, owns this movies. How could he not with lines like "break yo self fool" as he's shooting at a cop car.

I just saw it and it was great. I was getting tired of all the promos I was seeing for it and I thought I was going to end up hating it for not being able to live up to they hype. I am glad to say that I had a great time with it all the way through though. It was a little too long but that's the only (minor) complaint that I have with it. Already one of my favorite comedies. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

I thought I was one of the few people in the world who stomped their feet when not being able to control their laughter.
And yet, this movie was so funny, there were times where all you could hear in the theater were thunderous clomps of feet repeatedly slamming the floor. First time I've ever experienced that. Luckily, it was completely warranted.
One of the funniest movies ever. I was literally crying with laughter. And of course, stomping my feet.

I dont think I can ever go to a comedy again because nothing, NOTHING, will ever live up to or match this movie. It is literally THE funniest movie I have ever seen. I was crying from laughing in parts and the guy behind me was hyperventilating from laughing so hard. I actually turned around to see if he was ok at one point. Best part was some really old guy, like in his 70's walked in the theater right before the movie started and I heard a couple people whisper "Is he lost? He CANT be in the right theater" only to look over at him later and see him laughing his senile ass off. My friends dont like to go to movies, they like to download instead, but my constant word of mouth of 'you have to see this movie. now." has gotten them to agree to go with me today.

I thought it was great, Micheal Cera was the highlight of Superbad for me by far. On the downside, Jonah Hill really really started annoying at some points. His obnoxious character worked for the movie, and I could see alot of Seth Rogen in the his dialogue, but at times I was just overwhelmed by how long and how loud his shit talk would endure.

Saw it last night and loved every minute of it. It really lived up to the hype plus some. I give it a 9/10.
Trailers were ok. Saw the Dark Knight teaser, a longer Balls of Fury trailer, Dewey Cox and The Heaetbreak Kid which actually looked kind of funny. That was it. We got a Levis commercial too but that was it.

Saw it yesterday, and I have to admit, I was a little underwhelmed. Jonah Hill was almost unnecessarily brash and loud at times, even though hillarious. It's like one of those people you have to say "Ok, we all know you're funny. Just calm the fuck down!" McLovin didn't really pay off here either. It seemed like I was just watching the unrated version of the trailer....FOR TWO HOURS. I heard people groan about the length of Knocked Up (which is MUCH better), but that whole twenty minute rant about "the drawings"....totally unecessary. I mean I chuckled at a few of the pictures, but it wasn't worth the time. Cut it, and pack it on the dvd if you have to.
With that said, it did pack some memorable and realistic teenaged moments. Evan was great. There are different types of teen high school movies. There are your American Pies and Porkys; and then there are the true greats like Dazed and Confused and Fast Times. This one ranks right up there with the greats. I think Appatow could be the John Hughes of this generation. A comedic genius, with an educated know-how on what is going on with most people today. Hughes didn't direct all the 80s classics, but he had a hand in most of them as does Appatow here. The film rises above the rest, even if slightly overhyped and pointless at times.

I really enjoyed the movie. I bought the friendship and I had fun. I had two problems though that I was wondering if anybody else agress.
1. Jonah Hill. He was certianly funny and in the end I bought their friendship and the troubles they had, but did anybody else think he was kind of an asshole at times. There were times when he was constantly screaming where I wondered why Cera was even friends with him.
2. While I loved the Foggler story there was no pay-off. So where was he the next morning? There was no tag for his storyline which kind of annoyed me.

Superbad is Superfunny !!!
Jonah Hill ,Michael Cera,Christopher Mintz-Plasse are all equally funny and excellent in their roles. The young ladies of their dreams( Martha MacIsaac, Emma Stone, and Aviva)are cute and also very funny
Some of the scenes between Mclovin and Bill Hader (Officer Slater )and Seth Rogen (Officer Michaels) start to feel a bit repetitive but in the end Its raunchy over the top comedy, with heart.

I will jump on the bandwagon. This is a great comedy. My only real complaints are the length (two hours is a tad long for a movie like this and a few snips could/should have been made) and the storyline with the cops. Though there are some hilarious moments with them, like joblo said, it gets a little too carried away and they could have dropped a few of their scenes without losing anything. Other than that, I had a blast. Though frequently vulgar and hysterical, I never felt like it crossed or line or tried too hard to be "shocking" and gross. The cast is excellent (loved seeing Martin Starr) and the dialogue is authentic (sadly my 23 year-old brother-in-law still talks like those guys). This summer started and ended with great comedies. I can definitely see myself buying this on DVD.

Superbad - 9/10
This is one of the best movies of the year, and one of the funniest movies of all time. The teen life in this movie is authentic and hilarious and there wasn't a 30 second break between any laugh. The script was well written, and even though the story is crazy, it works very well when it all pans out. It's funnier than the famous teen comedies such as Dazed and Confused and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. And the character of McLovin will go down in my book as one of the most memorable characters ever. The length didn't bother me, and I wouldn't have minded a few extra minutes to find out some more about McLovin. A sequel isn't necessary though, just more films by the comic genius Apatow clan that has taken comedy to a new level. This is a comedy classic, no questions asked.

The first ten minutes or so of the movie are underwhelming, as it's all basically jokes involving having sex. But once McLovin and the cops get in, the movie is entertaining throughout and funny almost consistently. And it's also probably the most quotable comedy since The 40 Year Old Virgin. It's not groundbreaking and it doesn't bring comedy to a whole new level, but it's definitely the best comedy of the year next to Knocked Up. Hopefully, Judd Apatow and his team, and Edgar Wright's as well, will make movies as consistently as they have been, so we can have some good comic relief from apparent shit like I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, Norbit and Daddy Day Camp

Most of the same complaints that others had. Jonah Hill eventually did get annoying with the constant yelling and swearing, and the cop story got old eventually and was left without an ending. But it had some good laughs in it.

This movie go so much hype around it, that the college pot smoking drunk students came to see it,and i couldnt hear half the movie, cause everytime they said 'dick' or 'youre a little bitch' the whole audience laughed. Im gonna watch it again, soi can hear the other half of the movie.

Saw this movie friday night at the 7:00 showing, and MUCH to my surprise the theater was only about half full if that. I was fully expecting it to be sold out so I had boughten my tickets earlier in the day. On to the review though. I found myself liking the parts with the cops more then I thought I would, the trailer makes it look like they are completely fake unbelievable cops, and while there are some scenes that will lead you to believe this, in the end they redeem themselves. Everyone in this movie was just hilarious and McLovin was in a league of his own, he was easily one of the funniest characters I've seen in a movie in a loooong time. Jonah Hill and MIchael Cera are both hilarious in their respective roles. The part of the movie where you hear about Jonah's characters' problematic childhood is hilarious. People have been saying that scene goes on for too long, and maybe it does, but I think the whole idea of his affliction is just absolutely fucking hilarious. People are also commenting that they think this movie was too long, I disagree. I think it was the perfect lenghth. In the theater I was thinking to myself, "Man, I hope this movie never ends because it's so fucking funny!" The one minor complaint I have is the film's ending. No closure for McLovin or the cops, other then that, this film is a masterpiece. All in all, 10 bong rips out of 10.

I especially loved his problem during his childhood. That clip was leaked awhile back, and that had me laughing hysterically.

It definitely can't take the funniest movie of the year crown from Hot Fuzz, but a great time at the movies and a perfect packed theatre experience.
Not to get into a discussion about Hot Fuzz, but how is Hot Fuzz funnier than this. I loved Hot Fuzz, but it entertained me more than anything. I would only have laughed around 10-15 times during Hot Fuzz, but an uncountable amount of times during Superbad. It's your opinion and I respect it, but I would like a brief explanation on how it is funnier than Superbad. Maybe you just don't like the humour in Superbad, I don't know. I can see how someone could think Hot Fuzz was a better movie, but I just can't see how it is funnier.
Sorry for the prolonged, repetitive rant, I would just like an explanation.

SuperBad >>>>>> Knocked Up
SuperBad was damn funny and definitely worth seeing in theaters (with a packed house is the best). I really enjoyed all the characters and the dialogue that went with them but the only complaint was that it did run a little long.
Like JoBlo said, there was definitely some unnessacery scenes in this. Like the cops doing donuts in the empty parking lot. And what the hell was up with the "singing" scene??? That was just odd.
Anyways, I highly recommend this film and I enjoyed it a lot more that Knocked Up.

Whoo boy! Superbad was easily the funniest film the of the summer. I laughed so much during the movie I got tears in my eyes. It was so fucking funny. I went with two of my best friends, so we all loved it because the movie is all about it.
The laughs just never stop coming. From the penis drawings to the cops cock blocking McLovin. It was fucking hysterical. Of course, I went fully baked to the film, which is a ritual for comedies and horror films... or pretty much any film that looks especially entertaining.
I can't believe how funny this film was. I didn't think it would be funnier than Knocked Up, but this one just went over the line and stayed there. It was a work of genius. I have to see it again and take more people...
GO SEE IT! This along with Ratatouille and Knocked Up were the best, most fulfilling films of the summer.

P.S.: What the HELL is with people saying the cop story had "no ending?" I thought it had the most perfect ending.
*SPOILERS* You find out that they knew McLovin was a teen the entire time and they give him one last moment of glory to save for ther "cock-blocking," then they go and trash the car and watch it burn in a blaze of glory, indicating the end of their nightly adventure. What more of an ending could you have wanted? Their story was told. That was the end. It seemed incredibly fitting for me that the movie end on gunshots and burning flames. *END SPOILERS.*

I just got back from it. It was pretty good. I wouldn't call it a new teen comedy classic or anything. It's not even the funniest movie of the year (that honor goes to Hot Fuzz). But it's definitely funnier than I expected it to be. I cracked up on at least two or three occasions ("Yeah, they said that would happen in health class..." :D). It kinda makes me want to see Knocked Up now. Maybe I was wrong about that one too...

The thing that separates this teen comedy from others is the writing; the movie flows really well from scene to scene so that you stay with the characters, relate to them, and all the hilarious events that take place. Not only are a lot of the conversations funny as hell, but a lot of the situations the main characters find themselves in hysterical as well.
The two main characters, high school seniors, are trying to buy liquor to get in to a party and hopefully score with two hot girls. Now while that may seem like your standard teen comedy, the several obstacles and the banter that goes back and forth between the two, with all the angst and pressure the guys feel over actually succeeding in getting the booze, could be considered classic.
Feeding the hilarious fire is a buddy of theirs that gets a fake ID and is actually the one getting the alcohol. He gets mixed up with a couple of inept policemen that take him on somewhat of a ridealong and their hijinks is actually funnier than the journey of the other two.
While the T&A that usually accompanies this kind of teen comedy was a bit lacking, it didn't take away anything from the movie. The characters, particularly "McLovin" and his two cop buddies, are absolutely hysterical. They deliver several hysterical lines and all the steps they go through, from the beginning stages to the college party they probably shouldn't be at, all make one hilarious comedy that's one of the best of the year.

Loved it!
I was commenting to my wife that Evan and Seth's conversations at the opening of the movie and at the end (while buying jeans) felt improvised to me. That would have been impressive! Or maybe it's just that the actors had a really good rapport.
You guys forgot to mention the flashback as Evan tells Becca what he and his buddies do on Saturday nights...lol.
I didn't realize until afterwards that this movie was still worthy of it's R rating even without a single bit of nudity. :D

Wow, I thought this was right up your alley. Did you watch it in theatres? Sometimes movies are a shitload funnier with a group of people than just watching them alone.
And I know they are two completely different movies, but you gave Captivity an 8/10, and Superbad a 6/10? I thought Captivity was alright, but Superbad is The Godfather compared to that.
It's your opinion and I respect it, just seems odd that a cool cat like yourself wouldn't enjoy the hilariousness that is Superbad.

Wow. This movie is massively overpraised by those who have claimed it to be one of the funniest movies of all time. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it. I had a good time. It was pretty funny. But there were many scenes, particularly throughout the middle portion, that just got way too silly at times. Some of it really doesn't work. That said, the movie definitely gets better once they get to the party they are going to.
This movie has been compared to Dazed and Confused and I can definitely see the comparisons. Fortunately, this was way better. It's funnier, the characters are more relateable and likeable (although Jonah Hill was pretty obnoxious at times) and when the movie was over, it didn't feel like a giant waste of time unlike Dazed and Confused.
Still, the most disappointing thing about the movie is that the funniest line in the trailer wasn't in the damn movie.
"McLovin' sounds like a sexy cheeseburger" said in the trailer by Seth Rogan, I kept waiting to hear that line and it never came. So disappointing.
Good movie, but Knocked Up was DEFINITELY better.

I'd have to say the scenes with them were probably my least favorite simply for the fact that they were way too over the top and were rather hit and miss with a lot of their lines. Although I did like the part where they high tail it -- "It's the cops!"

IMO, the entire movie is rather hit or miss. Sure there are more hits than misses but I don't think the movie is as great as a lot of people are saying. Although I did like it a LOT once they finally get to their party.

I think everyone's sleeping on some of the more realistic and off-putting humor that's in the flick. Spoilers, I guess?
The part where Cera gets cornered in the room with random guys doing coke and then they force him to sing after disputing whether or not they actually know him is one of my favorite parts. The first time I saw someone doing coke, I was at a high school party. It made me want to quickly leave the room and not discuss what I had just seen. Of course, to be forced to stay and sing would have made my head explode.
Things like that are what make this movie stand out to me. That and blood from vaginas. I think there needs to be more vaginal humor in movies. Half of the young male experience with that area is usually gross. Everybody just focuses on the positives.

I hope the Apatow crew continues to make high quality comedies like this becuase they are on a real hot streak right now.

This movie was just what it needed to be- nothing more, nothing less. And yes, I think it lives up to its title as the new teen movie of its era. Very solid, mostly realistic (ish), and I can't believe a forum full of guys going to JoBlo's site aren't relating to this movie more. Boobs, dick jokes, underage girls, AND booze? How is this not a JoBlo fan's dream?

I can definitely see where you're coming from because I went into this movie with the same perspective, but I was glad I gave it a chance. And this coming from a guy who thought Delta Farce looked good.
A lot of things in this movie are different from American Pie, Dazed and Confused etc. You may have seen similar movies to this, but you haven't seen anything quite like this. And since cursing has been done in movies before, they shouldn't do it in this one? The two characters are not nerds, they just aren't as popular as some of the people, and the fat guy isn't awkward at all. And the girls in this movie aren't distinctly the most popular girls in school.
It is fucking terrific. The jokes are funny and original, the characters are great, the dialouge is great.
Hope you enjoy Delta Farce, but I think you are missing out on some of the great comedies of the decade.

I have a friend who reacted this very same way after seeing the movie, despite having laughed the entire way through and looking like he enjoyed himself. He called the movie mundane and boring solely because it was a teen sex comedy, yet he laughed so much during the movie it makes me wonder if he just wanted to hate it.
Also, the filmmaker's attempt with this movie was to make a realistic teen sex comedy that actually had teens act like teens. Thus is why you have things like underage drinking, because that's true to life, and why you have two nerds as the main characters (one fat one skinny, based entirely off the two screenwriters) and the awkwardness of the movie comes from the fact that life in general is awkward.
And lastly, Apatow did not direct Superbad, he merely produced it like he produced Taledega Nights and Anchorman. We don't think the movie is funny simply because he's attached to the production, we think it's funny because it's actually a very funny movie. However, the fact it is funny probably does have some connection to him in the long run. Not the other way around.

The writing in Superbad is ten times better than any of the American Pie movies. The style and feel of the movie are different also; this movie feels more realistic and it's easier to relate to the main characters.
And I wouldn't call the cops "bumbling," they're more inept, I think.

This was pretty amazing film as I finally saw it. 9/10
Jonah Hill was hilarious, the cops were funny as shit, Michael Cera was comic gold, and then their was McLovin. He was awesome, but the kid should take a short break from movies since I see him getting typecast as McLovin. It had a few suprisingly poignant moments near the end. I read some reviews stating the scene near the end with Seth and Evan ditch the party was way too gay, but I thought it was realistic since they were both wasted and good friends talk to each other like that when their fucked up. While it was funnier, I did like Knocked Up better as it had more heart and soul. But, Judd is definately the John Hughes for our generation. Now, Judd needs to give Martin Starr a staring role in his films instead of the guy with the beard.
Way too many quotable lines during this as well. Michael Cera's sex scene with Becca provided about 5 really good ones. Plus their was a good 5 or 6 scenes that just made me lose it.

As soon as he spoke with that raspy voice, build and head of hair I could have sworn that was him.
Good coming of age movie btw.

They hired an artist to draw them all. If you look during the credits, they credit the guy with "Penis drawings". Now what I want to know is who came up with the concepts of some of those drawings. They were awesome.

Awesome movie laughed the whole time. The police officers are great. Also read on some people think its a dumb teenage movie. In a way it does deal with that but in an adult way. if that makes any sence. give it a chance.

Kind of reminds me of back when I was in 11th grade actually. There was this kid Tom who used to draw pictures of this other kid named Hoff in all these homoerotic poses and pass them around class. The theme was that something was always going up Hoff's ass. For instance a picture of Hoff at the zoo would have the rhino's horn going up his ass. A picture of Hoff at Ellis Island had him sitting on the flame of the Statue of Liberty. Another picture depicted the sinking of the Titanic with the one edge of the ship sticking straight up... and into Hoff's ass. You get the point. Ahh those were fucking classic. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

I love Judd Apatow and his crew's tell-it-like-it-is comedy. It provides a fresh new face to the genre which I think is refreshing, fantastic, and brilliantly hilarious. What's so funny about Superbad, though, is that it is quite over-the-top, in the best way possible. Whether it is the lead characters' almost unnatural and never-ending string of blatant, crude, tactless sex talk or the adventures of "McLovin" with a pair of stoner cops, the film does stretch the boundaries a bit. And yet, at the same time, the movie has absolutely no probelm at all in delivering some brutally and simply honest and true scenes. There are quite a few of these such instances in which the film is just so... true. The main characters are immediately recognizeable, especially to me, in terms of their "conquests". And ultimately the whole friendship theme is just great. It never ceases to amaze me what these guys - Rogen, Apatow, and crew - can do with the material. They take a painfully average genre - the teen sex comedy - and turn it into something special, realistic, honest, true and - dare I say it - touching and poignant. I love their sense of humour, but what makes this Summer's two films - Superbad and Knocked Up - so great is that they mix in such honest poignancy to the crudeness of their humour. I did think that Knocked Up was a superior movie, though, as it is a lot more realistic and far less crude and over-the-top as this one. But it comes close. Great job.
RATING: 7.5/10.
