View Full Version : This irks me

No inserts in DVD cases.
I’m paying 15-20 dollars for your fucking DVD, give me something inside them. Even if its just a copy of the front cover with a chapter listing on the back. I just shelled out my hard earned money to purchase a movie I liked, thus helping to pay the actors salary and helping keep the production studio in business, and I get an empty dvd case? And not only that, I’ve noticed most DVD’s that come with nothing inside them also come with blank DVD’s. Like ‘Disturbia’ I just bought. No insert, no nothing, and the DVD is just a bare gray disc with ‘DISTURBIA’ written on it. Wow, the movie made over $100 million in the theaters and was #1 for 3 consecutive weeks, something unheard of for a non-blockbuster type film these days, but apparently none of the money the movie made went to DVD designing. Its insanely easy to download movies nowadays. Or rent and copy. I like to buy the actual movie. I like to see it in my collection. I like knowing what I have is legit and not a rip-off. But honestly, what the hell am I paying for anymore? A plastic case with a disc inside. That’s it. And its certainly not worth $15.
Maybe I should start downloading/copying. Hmm....

I agree with you. It's something minor but it irks me as well. The blank dvds moreso than the missing inserts. If it's a hit film there really should be no reason for this. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Amen my brothas. I have been bitching and moaning about this to friends and family for well over a year. Remember when dvds were sweet? You'd get that chapter list, some advertisements for other movies, maybe a short 3 page booklet about the movie, and if you were lucky a two sided cover that you could decide(only have 3 dvds like this but I love it so much I'm putting it here). Now your lucky if you even get the ads. I cant believe I just said that. The studios are to fucking cheap to advertise. TO ADVERTISE!!! Thats just damn lazy. They do it to big budget movies too. Mission Impossible 3. Decent movie. I liked it. Waited for it on dvd and bought it day of. The two discer. I get into the car and open it up, and what do I find. The shittiest big budget dvd ever. The case is some shittier type of polymer than your average case. Its overly black, flimsy as hell, and smells. There is only one dvd allowed to smell and that is the sexy evil dead 2 book of the dead dvd. Then I notice the discs. Both of them are the crappy blank silver dvds with MI:3 sandblasted onto them. Thats it. No inserts. Nothing. I damn near returned the thing out of principle. Then I remembered I was a movie whore and that I loved the movie so I kept it. To add insult to injury, the dvd menu is even lazy. Its all flashy but the flash is poorly done. ...........Sorry, got on a tangent. Yeah, I hate how there are no inserts in dvds anymore.

Not a big deal to me, frankly I'm just happy to have the movie, if there's anything else of substance then woo-hoo...:D

This annoys the hell out of me. The extra stuff that come in the packaging is the REASON i buy DvD's and have gotten out of and not back into my pirating ways (that and mallicious websites, fuck i hate formatting my computer).
Theres been tons of situations where i'll turn to a buddy who either pirates or buys pirated stuff and i say "aw sweet! such and such movie is out tomorrow" and they say "i've had that movie for 3 months" and i laugh to myself a little, so what you have a in theater rip off of the movie while i will have a amazing quality vid and sound copy with special features and any cool nonsense that comes with the acctaul DvD.
And speaking of special features thats another one! It acctaully tops my list over nothing inside the box. I hate these bare bones DvD's that come with nothing but the movie and maybe a trailer. I meen there are VHS special editions out there with more extras then some DvD's! TCM 2 comes to mind.

"Scene Selections" on the DVD menu usually works :)

I could really care less about the inserts in the DVD's, but what matters to me is the special features. I want there to be a blooper real, a making of, certain scenes that were difficult to shoot, ALL major actor commentary, etc. I don't wanna drop $15-$20 on a DVD and just have the movie on it with one or two trailers. I want something of substance.

I once bought a copy of EVIL DEAD that came with this 20+ page booklet that included interviews with all the main actresses.
That's pretty much all I got out of the 10 or so original DVDs I own... it makes you wonder if shelling out 12 or 14 bucks for a movie is even worth it... as far as I'm concerned it is, but only if you really like the film.

I've never understood complaints concerning the lack of chapter inserts. Does anybody even use those?
Personally, my main compulsion is the DVD cover art/packaging. If I buy a DVD, I want it to look nice.
Speaking of which, the HOT FUZZ cover really annoys me. Why couldn't they remove all the red shit and make the "From the creators of Shaun of the Dead" thing a sticker? I own the poster, and it looks badass. Now they've taken the poster, and bastardized it for the DVD. Fuckin' annoying.

having inserts annoy me more than anything else (nice booklets with useful information not included), they just get in the way and are completely pointless. if i even need a chapter list (i think i've only used the chapter function on dvds maybe 4-5 times and that was only when testing faulty discs) i'll use the damn dvd
no special features is the only thing that annoys me (crappy cover art can if its really really bad) and its why i'll generally never buy a first release of a current film

What stores are you guys buying from where this is a constant problem?

I don't buy a DVD for the inserts, or whatever. I buy a DVD for the movie. Most of the time, the DVD case says what you're getting inside the DVD and for the most part . . . it's the freakin' movie.
You're paying $15-20 for a DVD and you demand an insert? Wow, talk about strict.

I cant watch the insert. All i care about is the movie.
I mean, its just a slip of shitty paper with a chapter listing. Whoo!
Is anyone going to honestly say that chapter listing not being in a case is going to stop them from buying a movie that he/she loves?

No inserts for movie DVDs is no big deal to me, although I like the clips that still come in nearly all the boxes. I stick my easter egg instructions in them. Like others have said, I don't need a piece of paper with the chapter listing. Just a waste of paper, if you ask me. I hate waste.
The only thing I do mind is no inserts or episode listing for TV DVD sets. Most have them. But I bought one set that didn't have the insert or the listing of the episodes anywhere on the box itself. That pissed me off.

i don't think its matters what store a DvD is bought from since every DvD form that production run will have all the same stuff in it.

Oh, wait, I understand.
Yeah, I don't really care about having the inserts unless they have really cool stuff in them (the Criterion DVD of Dazed and Confused is an excellent example) and more than just the chapter selections. Although they can be convenient when a movie's dragging on and you desperately need to know how much more there is to the movie.

I'm sorry, but when you shell out upwards of $60.00 for a fucking dvd, I want the fucking piece of paper (insert), I want a slipsleeve, 2 discs (or more), and a handjob.....I'm not kidding.

Keeping in mind that it costs $10 to watch a movie in the theaters, I think $12-14 isn't horrible.
I'd only really *expect* extras if I were buying a special edition. For other films, I'm buying them in DVD because I want to see a kickass movie with clear picture and good sound.

To be honest, what pisses me off more than anything is movies like Zodiac. I loved the movie, but the DVD that just came out has nothing on it at all. NOTHING. Then I hear plans for a 2-disc special edition coming out in what 6 months?? This is absolutely insane.
Why would anyone buy this DVD knowing that it there is a 10x better version coming out soon? I hate that we are constantly getting special editions of movies months after the original DVD release. Studios are just trying to shit on as many people as possible when it comes to buying DVD's.
