At the beginning of this summer movie season, the heavy favorites in this race would be a three-peat of the "dynamic duo" of Johnny Deep's Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Carribean franchise and the CGI wizards at Pizar. Well not this time.

In the rematch from Summer 2004, Spider-Man, Shrek, Harry Potter and Jason Bourne battle each other in an all-out box office brawl and thwarted Jack and the Pixar boys' chance of giving new term to the phrase "Three times the charm". And with special guest stars NYPD detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) from the Die Hard franchise, and Hong Kong inspector Lee and LAPD cop Carter (Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker) from the Rush Hour films, this summer proved to be one of the greatest seasons in recent movie history.

Add to that are the sleepers in the form of R-rated gross out comedies Knocked Up and Superbad. It's nice to have some originality added to the already specutlar lineup. And The Simpsons Movie became one of the highest grossing TV-to-movie adaptations to date. There are a few bombs like the videogame adaptation Dead or Alive, the "torture porn" horror films of Captivity and Hostel Part II, the much-delayed Nicole Kidman/Daniel Craig sci-fi thriller The Invasion and the Jet Li/Jason Statham martial arts bulletfest WAR. But other than that, this summer is hassle-free.

Here are the box office results of Summer 2007 according to BoxOfficeMojo.com (as of August 27th):

1 Spider-Man 3 Sony $336,530,303
2 Shrek the Third P/DW $321,012,359
3 Transformers P/DW $308,631,000
4 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End BV $307,829,257
5 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix WB $283,309,000
6 Ratatouille BV $199,036,000
7 The Bourne Ultimatum Uni. $185,143,000
8 The Simpsons Movie Fox $173,437,000
9 Knocked Up Uni. $147,730,000
10 Live Free or Die Hard Fox $132,833,171

Same time next summer.

I really need to see these three, I hate being busy over the summer and missing out on some true gems from what I hear.

If we judged the summer by continuous release of good or entertaining films, summer would never end this year. Throughout September, October, November and December there are a shitload of good looking and entertaining looking films coming out, all of which should do decent or semi-decent at the box-office. Here is a list of the upcoming movies that the majority mix of critics and fanboys are looking forward to:

Balls of Fury
Halloween
Death Sentence
Shoot 'Em Up
3:10 to Yuma
Hatchet
The Brave One
Eastern Promises
The Assassination of Jesse James by Coward Robert Ford
Resident Evil: Extinction
Into the Wild
Good Luck Chuck
The Kingdom
Trick 'R Treat
The Heartbreak Kid
Michael Clayton'
We Own the Night
Elizabeth: The Golden Age
30 Days of Night
Gone Baby Gone
Martian Child
Saw IV
Bee Movie
American Gangster
No Country for Old Men
Fred Claus
Lions For Lambs
Charlie Bartlett
Beowulf
Mr. Magorium
The Mist
Hitman
The Golden Compass
I Am Legend
National Treasure 2
Walk Hard
Aliens Vs. Predator Requiem
There Will Be Blood

And probably a dozen or so that I have missed or forgotten. The majority of those movies would do well or OK during the summer months. Should be a good fall and winter!
