Jamie Foxx Defends NFL Star Michael Vick Over Dog Fighting Charges

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (August 23, 2007) – Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson recently sat down with Jamie Foxx for a candid talk about Jamie’s new gig – and even a hot button topic from the world of sports – Michael Vick’s dog fighting charges.

Jamie is busy doing his thing on “The Foxxhole,” his weekly show on Sirius Satellite Radio show. And while an incredible LG Beach House in Malibu provides a spectacular summer backdrop, no subject is off-limits with Jamie, as Shaun found out during her stay as a special guest.

“Is he really going to jail?” Jamie asked Shaun about Michael Vick.

“Yes, he’s going to plea bargain,” Shaun said.

Although Vick has been almost universally condemned since agreeing to plead guilty to dog fighting conspiracy, according to Foxx, people should not be so quick to judge the NFL star.

“It’s a cultural thing, I think,” Jamie said. “Most brothers didn’t know that, you know. I used to see dogs fighting in the neighborhood all the time. I didn’t know that was Fed time. So, mike probably just didn’t read his handbook on what not to do as a black star.”

While he has a way of lightening even the most sensitive of subjects, Jamie is sincere in his belief that the quarterback is not being given a fair shake.

“I know that cruelty to animals is bad, but sometimes people shoot people and kill people and don’t get time,” Jamie continued. “I think in this situation, he really didn’t know the extent of it, so I always give him the benefit of the doubt.”

On Monday, Vick said through a lawyer that he will plead guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiracy to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture.

Vick is scheduled to appear next Monday in U.S. District Court in Richmond, Virginia. According to reports, the recommended sentencing range will be from 12 to 18 months in prison.

Jamie Foxx has always been an idiot.

“It’s a cultural thing, I think,” Jamie said. “Most brothers didn’t know that, you know. I used to see dogs fighting in the neighborhood all the time. I didn’t know that was Fed time. So, mike probably just didn’t read his handbook on what not to do as a black star.”

That's totally why he held them in a black shed with no windows at night.

Well I think we all know that dogfighting is illegal, just what level is what I think Foxx was talking about. Considering most crimes against animals are considered misdemeanors (Even for REALLY heinous stuff), and require NO jail time just a fine and some community service, it wouldn't surprise me if someone wasn't aware how severe the actual statutes are for dogfighting.

(however it does go against Dave Chappelle's statement about how every black man is a qualified paralegal;)

But in Vick's case I think its another bad example of the dangerous pairing of "the hood" mentality and a million dollar paycheck.

These guys get drafted from the hood almost straight out of highschool, with barely any real education except what they learn on the street, and then they're making bank we can only dream of coupled with loads of free-time during the off-season. These guys get bored and since there is BARELY much distance between the time they lived in "da hood" and now living the high life, they're gonna revert back to old favored methods of recreation.

It doesn't completely click for these guys that they're not in that world anymore and that they need to evolve past those old habits and beliefs because you're in THE FUCKING SPOTLIGHT, and that shit will come out especially when you're a rich as fuck football player!

I don't know about the "cultural thing" remark, but Jamie Foxx knows more about the "hood" than I do. The guy spoke his mind and I don't think his comments are that bad. It's not like he was condoning it or anything.

“I know that cruelty to animals is bad, but sometimes people shoot people and kill people and don’t get time,” Jamie continued.

He's right about that. The gruesomeness of the crime is being escalated by animal rights groups.

The logic here is: because people treat each other horribly, it doesn't matter how we treat animals? I won't deny humans are fucking assholes to each other, but it's absurd to torture animals and he does deserve jailtime. Chances are someone who can do that to an animal can just as easily do it to a human.

Although, to be honest posting those pictures of the dogs was about as cheap as when pro-lifers post pictures of dead fetuses to make their argument.

Well, he definitely was right about the way we act when other people go through shit. Some people out there are probably having a ball over the fact that Owen Wilson tried to kill himself, and I imagine out of those people some of them detest Michael Vick.

Personally, I believe we should do neither. Vick deserves jail, dogfighting is evil and should be illegal, and celebrating human suffering is horrible and wrong.

Heart Collector, I agree with you a lot of times, but I'm going to have to call it on this one. Nobody's saying dogs are as important as humans, that's just asinine. But regardless, what that guy did to them was sick and inhumane. I hope someone slits his fucking throat and then squats over and shits in the open wound, then pinches his nose together with their fingers while holding together the open wound with their hands and shakes his fucking head furiously while someone else skullfucks him with a flaming cock. Oh please, the NFL is the most overrated past time in American history next to baseball. I also never understood why people get upset when their favorite teams lose. Because every team is striving to win, but for some reason some of them probably have this higher integrity surrounding them simply because you're rooting for them, when in reality football teams stand for nothing than a group of players each competiting against other groups, yet people still throw riots and rape in the streets whenever their team loses, as if Bush won another election. This goes for all televised sports.

They're all a bunch of whiny overpaid, over-protected pussies anyways with too long of a vacation. Rugby has always been a more real sport than football ever was.

Competetive competition has been around since the beginning of civilization. Football isn't destroying civilization. If anything, it's another great tradition that will be carried on through the ages. Although, I'm personally a basketball fan, especially college basketball (it's always a bad day when the Tar Heels lose). Of course people are going to be upset when their team loses.

Thank you! I think what Goldberg had to say was much smarter than Foxx's dumbass comments, but yeah here you have a guy who, despite being a dumbass, was able to get into a good college and keep his grades high enough to continue playing football. Vick had plenty of legal woes before this dogfighting thing came out, so I imagine he knew enough about the law to realize that *gasp* dogfighting isn't legal! So the argument that he probably didn't know it was wrong really doesn't fly here.

Besides, dogfighting is more of an urban thing than a southern thing. It's probably going on in New York and Boston. Hell, we can just assume it's going on in Newark.:p

Well we got a president who still says "Nucular" even after being told how to correctly pronounce it, because its how he learned to say it from where he grew up.

Some learned behavior dies fucking hard and goes beyond logic.

I don't know exactly know how many people directly confronted Vick in a civil discourse about how morally abhorrent dogfighting is (I'm gonna guess 0)., and anyway one person's moral outrage is another person's "eh".

Of course that doesn't matter, because whether he knew how evil it was or not, he sure did know it was illegal.

I'm sorry but I don't buy that at all.

Vick understood 100 per cent that what he was doing was immoral and illegal, but like a large number of professional athletes nowadays, he wanted to use his newfound fortune to promote a “gangsta” image and lifestyle.

There’s a reason many of these millionaires go around with “posses” and often get busted because they are “packin’ heat”.

Myself? I think it's pathetically hilarious that a multi-millionaire would risk his freedom for a few thousand dollars, which is no more than pocket change for him.

You're assuming the payoff is the point.

The guy actually managed and organized these fights, he wasn't settling for being just a competitor. Apparently the off-season was a little too boring for Vicky.

I don't think the payoff was Vick's sole purpose --- I truly believe a lot of these guys get off on trying to portray themselves as big bad ganstas, and he likely thought that running an illegal dog-fighting ring would do wonders for his all-important street cred.

Fa shizzle my nizzle, homie. :D

Well, okay. I'm sure he knew it was illegal in some way - but I don't think he thought it was bad. You see what I mean? He knew it was illegal but didn't know why because it was something he liked.

I understand your view, I just respectfully disagree with it.

I doubt Vick believed there was nothing wrong with killing dogs by electrocution or drowning. He knew that it was bad. He just didn’t care.

And now the scumbag is getting exactly what he deserves.

If Vick's attorney calls dog fighting mala prohibita in his opening statement I'll laugh my ass off.

Of course the NFL still thinks the only thing wrong with the dog fighting was the gambling. I wish that idiot corporation would just go away.

You honestly believe he didn't know it was bad? Is he a retard then? He knew it was both. Did he ever publicly advertise that he did it? Nope. Didn't we find out by accident? I'm not sure how it was discovered.... He covered it up, he knew it was illegal and immoral, but he is immoral.

It's not like the bastard even needed the money (it would still disgust me if he was poor). He's rich, the money to him was like coffee money for any of us. He's richer than most of us will ever hope to be. He's just a sick asshole who got off watching animals suffer.

Anyone who can do this to any animal needs to do jail time and lot's of it. As for Mr Fox, it kills me that every time someone comes out to speak about something a black person does they find some reason to defend this person and act as if they are excused because they are poor or black or both. Im black and it makes me sick to keep hearing quality of life and race used as an excuse. And its embarrassing.

I just want people to learn to think before they speak and what the hell how bout not breaking the law while you're at it.

I felt Foxx was being so too. It alluded to him making light of the situation with his comments.

About Vick, I feel pretty inline with those saying that he should be lynched... Wait.... No, what he did really bugs me. I don't go for cruelity towards living things. Period. Okay, that was two periods - period

Anyway, I think Foxx was making light of the situation, which is what comedians do. Part of his problem is that no one knows what his forte is supposed to be anymore. If he'd done a Michael Vick sketch on In Living Color, with the same "joke" premise, I could imagine most of us would think it's pretty funny. As it stands, he's Jaime Foxx taking up for a deplorable pro athlete.

I think the area isn't as clear as context this quote has been given to us.

I have 10 bucks on THC.
