View Full Version : Do you think that sometimes you spend too much on dvds

Sometimes that all I seem to ever use my spending money to buy. Me and the wife pay the bills then we each get some spending money (its normally like a $100 for 2 weeks) and I just buy dvds.

Well I had spending money yesterday and my birthday money so I am wandering around best buy and I got a nice little stack of movies going (robocop steel book, halloween 4, harry and the hendersons, spartacus) and I thought damn just once I want to do something different with my spending money so I put all the dvds back and bought a Nitendo DS and like 3 games.

I mean I already had the robocop, and I have never seen Halloween 4 (just getting to finish the Halloween series).

Yup, it's why I don't buy dvds that often anymore and i never buy them when they're new out, always wait for sales or get them second hand. Some time ago I did a rough calculation of how much i'd spent on the dvds i own (a lot / most of which i bought when released) and was rather shocked by it especially when i realised if i'd waited for them to drop in price i would have saved quite a bit of money or been able to get other dvds as well.

Almost all the time.

I think I've transitioned my spending habits from DVDs to CD's -- I've made a promise to myself that any DVD I really, really liked and must have before all others, I will get it if it does have a high rewatch value. And, even then, I would get it used.

Constantly. I still however enough to pay bills and save up plenty of money for other things. I have child coming soon so I've been spending less on DVDs recently.

I don't really ever have anything i need to buy... and dvds are always good for entertainment, so i buy em when i don't have any other major purchases i need to make.

All the time here as well. I could have saved all that friggin money to make a pretty decently budgeted film...

I mean I love dvds and I am not going to stop buying them but I was like just once I want to do something different with my disposable cash. I have so many movies I need to watch right now that I doubt I will ever catch up on what I have to watch with the constant influx of new movies.

I am enjoying the DS, I have been in a very old game mood lately, 2 months ago I bought an old school Nitenedo and Super NES and about 40 games for both systems and its been loads of fun. I just beat the original Final Fantasy and Crystalis. I saw they have Final Fantasy III on the DS that will likely be my next purchase.

Right now I am in my TV series watching time of the year, I am watching Heroes on DVD, I got Smallville coming up and I want to watch the Supernatural I bought as well.

Yeah, I often realize I do...but then I don't spend that much on anything else. Monthly rent and auto insurance (every 6 months), and occasional gas and groceries...that's pretty much it.

Sometimes I think that, but then when I think that I won a full scholarship to college and didn't pay a dime for my education, I realize that most of the people my age have school loans, and I have didlysquat, so whatever I spend on DVDs is nothing.

i spend way too much money on dvds, but i don't mind. after i pay all my bills, most of my money goes to dvds. i don't do drugs and i don't really drink (ulke most of my friends) i rather have something to show for my money and i just so happen to love movies/tv shows, etc...

I spend $50 bucks a month on Netflix and $20 on DVD-Rs, so that's $70 in DVDs per month for about 50 movies a month. I'm satisfied with the bargain, I just wish I could afford REAL DVDs.

Not me . . . I usually buy one or two DVDs a month, if that. I'm very picky about what movies and DVDs I own, so I'm not at Best Buy every other second looking to see what to buy.

They go by MSRP of the DVD, not what you actually pay for the DVD. As for what it's worth now, some go for lower than the MSRP, but a lot of OOP stuff is actually higher, so it evens out. BTW, it's a really useful thing to have incase you have your DVDs in the basement and your basement floods or something, they factor it into your home owner's insurance. They'll ask you for a value of your collection, and that's where it comes in handy.

I use dvd profiler and it keeps track of my SRP as well

this is the SRP for each year for the movies I purchased in that given year

2001- 251.88
2002- 1264.96
2003- 2495.61
2004- 6469.24
2005- 7728.21
2006- 9009.91
2007- 5523.57

my grand total for dvds if I had purchased them at SRP would be $32872.76

but here is what I actually paid (I think 2001's numbers are in 2002 a little bit as I didn't start using profiler tell 2002)

2001- 97.91 (38.87% of SRP)
2002- 633.46 (50.07% of SRP)
2003- 701.85 (28.12% of SRP)
2004- 2650.90 (40.97% of SRP)
2005- 2706.58 (35.02% of SRP)
2006- 2653.42 (29.45% of SRP)
2007- 1430.69 (25.90 of SRP)

for a grand total spent of $10,874.83 (33.08 of SRP), I guess thats not to bad over a 7 year period but it would easily be enough for a new car with the interest accrued over a 7 year period.

I am a pretty good bargain shopper, I wait for sales, but things their first week and hit pawn shops and cheap online sites like amazon but still I am spending roughly $2500 a year in dvds

yep! new DVDs are waaaaayyy to expensive.
it seems like the only way to ever get a new DVD at a good price is the first week it's out and Best Buy usually has it on sale for $15. but i'm not always able to get a movie when it first comes out.

Actually, it seems like new releases drop in price faster than they ever have. Usually a couple of months after release, it shows up in a 2 for $20 deal, and eventually, they all seem to go for $3.99-$5.99 (not counting special editions, multi-disc sets, and criterions)

I realized this truth last year when my local Suncoast Video was taken away from me. Part of me died, and yet, I eventually found myself cashing paychecks less frequently.

i think all suncoast went out of business not just your local one

ChickFlick

Not all Suncoasts went out of business. The majority of them did, but not all. Infact, in one of the malls in NJ, the Suncoast went out of business and opened back up roughly 6-8 months later.

No I don't think I spend too much on DVDs. But at the same time this year a whole bunch of movies I had really wanted finally came out on R1 DVD. Therefore after this Nov. my spending will probably decrease.

Wait, I have roughly 500 DVD's (since 2000). Is that anywhere near any of you or less? That 1,345 sounds like A LOT.

Some started closing out while Transworld Entertainment purchased the chain. TWE owns FYE, and the same company that purchased Wherehouse Music, Sam Goody, Musicland, Strawberries and a number of other ones. It bought out Suncoast, and a lot of them began to close out (similar to Wherehouse, etc.. when they were first purchased), and then the rest remained open with the same name but with the TransWorld look.

I actually currently own 2,167. But I'm an exception I'd say, most people around here probably hover around the 250-750 range, I'd guess.

I have a little over 1,000 I'd say, but yesterday, my fiance and I picked out our own place together, so it's time to start saving, and no more buying for a while :(
