Jerry Lewis apologizes for anti-gay slur
By Steve Gorman

Comedian Jerry Lewis apologized on Tuesday for his use of an anti-gay slur during the weekend broadcast of his annual Labor Day Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The controversial remark came Monday afternoon in the 18th hour of the live national telecast, when a visibly weary Lewis, 81, was joking on stage, pretending to introduce members of someone's family as he mugged for the camera.

"Oh, your family has come to see you. You remember Bart, your oldest son, Jesse, the illiterate fag ...," Lewis said, as he apparently caught himself and ceased the gag in mid-sentence, turning on his heel away from the camera.

A clip of the incident surfaced on a number of Internet sites on Tuesday, including TMZ.com, drawing a condemnation from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

"Jerry Lewis' on-air use of this kind of anti-gay slur is simply unacceptable," GLAAD President Neil Giuliano said in a statement, adding that the comic's remark "feeds a climate of hatred and intolerance" that could incite anti-gay violence.

GLAAD urged Lewis to apologize for the comment and asked the entertainer to meet with members of the group "to help him understand why these words are so hurtful."

Lewis issued a statement later in the day through organizers of the telethon saying he was sorry "to anyone who was offended."

"I obviously made a bad choice of words. Everyone who knows me understands that I hold no prejudices in this regard," he said. "The success of the (telethon) and all the good that will come from it shouldn't be lost because of one unfortunate word. I accept responsibility for what I said. There are no excuses. I am sorry."

The 21 1/2-hour telethon, broadcast Sunday night and Monday from the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Las Vegas, aired live on 190 stations in the United States and Canada. The 42nd annual event raised a record $63.7 million for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, according to the organization.

The comedian's gaffe came months after actor Isaiah Washington was fired from the ABC hit medical drama "Grey's Anatomy" after reportedly making an anti-gay slur during an argument on the set of the show.

Lewis has caused stirs in the past with off-color remarks.

During an appearance at a comedy festival in 2000 he was asked who were his favorite female comedians.

"I don't like any female comedians," he responded, going on to say that seeing a woman doing comedy "sets me back a bit. ... I think of her as a producing machine that brings babies into the world."

Lewis has always been a bit of jerk, but he also comes from the golden age where people like Sinatra, etc used the words fag and broad and chickie like people today use the f word. Doesnt bug me a bit. I'd be more annoyed if Lewis actually met with these thinned skinned people. I hate political correctness. Tell em ta "blow ya Jerry" :D

Political correctness is getting out of hand. Was it offensive? Yeah. Does he need to meet with GLAAD members to find out why it is offensive? No.

Jerry Lewis at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in 2000:

"I don't like any female comedians. A woman doing comedy doesn't offend me, but sets me back a bit. I, as a viewer, have trouble with it. I think of her as a producing machine that brings babies in the world."

He's worked with some very funny female comedians in his career and ever since I heard this, I've had a thing against Jerry.

He needs to be held accountable for what he says.
In a world where saying the wrong thing can get you fired from a radio station or TV show, apologizing ad nauseum seems to be the answer.

So get to it, flayvin.

While I obviously disagree with his comments about the gender I'd be hard-pressed to find even a couple of female comics that I've found funny.

Lewis screwed up on a joke, but he's over 80 years old and was awake for over 18 hours. Plus, unlike the other celebrities Lewis did it during a telethon that he pretty much dedicates mostly throughout the year. I'm just thinking that maybe we could let him slide on this one?

The comment Rusty posted was from 7 years ago at a different event, and it's a dumb comment (but then again, the context might have been sarcastic who knows) but this is a bad slip-up.

Jeezus Cripes, I'm so sick of this bull crap...politcal correctness is absolutely getting out of hand. This is America for God sakes, if you don't like what someone says you have options...tell him to STFU or you can turn the smegging channel. Do I think it's right, not really but do I care enough to break the poor guys balls over it? Definately NOT! Considering the horrors that are burning through the world it AMAZES me that this is what people are focused on, somebody drops a hard F** and it's hands across America! You wanna do some good GLADD? Raise some money for AIDS research or something...don't waist people's time with speech censoring. Members of the black community worked their ASSES off getting the dreaded N-word taken out of everyday speech and look what happened? Jackasses all over the nation (comedians, rappers) have brought it right back in...maybe not at the water cooler but they've been dropping in the just the right ways to make it funny. Best thing to do is toughen your skin and laugh it off because you'll NEVER....NEVER win the bad word victory.

Um...why the heck is GLADD on him for being anti-gay? That's pretty stupid. Have they actually watched those old Dean and Jerry movies? That's like NAMBLA riding Michael Jackson about having underage children sleeping in his bed with him.

Why do people say what they believe and then apologize? John McCain just did the same thing.
