Neil Jordan is one of my favorite directors, and although I'm not a big fan of vigilante/revenge pictures, supposedly this a studio collaboration that Jordan himself is happy with so I'm there next Friday.

I caught wind of this trailer on the DVD of "300"

Looks good and a role that is tailor made for Jodie....

But this OTHER movie from the 70's comes to mind.....

Does borrow the angle of a lead character taking the law into their own hands premise, Knock off some bad guys.... WHAT THE HECK

But lame title.......... THE BRAVE ONE

Even if the movie is shite it'll be worth going just for the exploitation esque idea of Jodie Foster as either Charles Bronson or The Punisher depending on your era. Death Sentence was brilliant, just saw Death Wish for the first time, it might be a good few weeks for revenge/vigilante film viewings for me.

Foster's good, there are some good moments but there are really large sections of the film that just suck. Not really worth your time.

The Brave One - 9/10

Wow, this one hit me hard. Jodie Foster delivers an amazing performance, one of her best in recent memory. The story is engaging and more original than most revenge flicks. You feel Jodie Foster's pain, and you cannot wait until she kills the motherfuckers that beat her up. But along the way, there are many stops, which makes up a good part of the movie. She runs into many dangerous situations, in which she gets out of, but not without looking like she is the bad one in the mix. Mainwhile she is befriending the detective (Terrence Howard) who is working on the case, in which she is the reason for. The characters are developed so well, even the characters in the sub-plots. There are some extremely intense scenes, not just of violence, but truly intense scenes that involve conversations between Foster and Howard. This is not your typical B-revenge flick. This is an A class thriller, with wonderful performances. It should not be missed. Nicky Katt also delivers an excellent performance, and lightens the mood in a few scenes so you aren't tense throughout the whole film.

Death Wish with a vagina...

I would've liked to get to know Naveen Andrews character a bit more in the beginning, and it could've been a little more suspenseful in the middle, but terrific performances and a great right and wrong dynamic between Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard.
Not as good as Death Wish or even Death Sentence, but still good enough to keep it from being just a generic rehash.

Jodie Foster gives a great performance. The film is a combination of Death Wish and Taxi driver. It falls apart at the end.If the ending had been written better with the same outcome my grade would be higher.
Scale of 1-10 a 7

Saw it tonight.

Foster is believable, Howard is terrific, and Neil Jordan has a very good visual sense behind the camera. But the movie is hurt by its own implausibility. I didn't expect Foster to be a full-blown vigilante in this, and the situations she finds herself in (where we are supposed to believe her actions are justified) stretched credibility a bit far. It goes into long discussions about what is necessary, what is right, so on and so forth... and by the end, I ultimately didn't think it had arrived at anything more substancial than you would see in any Death Wish rip-off. The ending is especially unbelievable, and way too pat.

Thank God for the always awesome Nicky Katt, who gets some funny one-liners here as Howard's partner that are much needed, with most of the subject matter trying to be very, very heavy stuff.

An interesting failure...

This movie was fucking fantastic. Great performances by Howard and Foster.... Loved the "action" scenes, the way in which they were shot.... Great character development, and all the characters had chemistry on-screen.

Loved it, loved it, loved it.

The acting is fantastic, particularly by the principals. Foster delivers what we’ve come to expect, while Howard steals the film with probably the best performance of his career. Also love the style of the picture, the mood, and the visuals in general.

Where I have my problem is in two places. First, a lot of what happens in the story feels far too convenient. I know things have to happen so other things can happen in a movie, that’s just the way movies work, but it certainly isn’t supposed to be this obvious. When Foster’s character is the one person in a store that just happens to place host to a robbery/domestic violence episode during the five minutes she is there, it is just a little too clean cut and perfect. Her character needs to go through this, that is apparent, but it shouldn’t be so obvious that the script outline called for it.

My second problem is the way New York City is portrayed. I understand she needs to live in a big bad city full of fears around every corner, and as a New Yorker I may take some personal offense to this slant, but it bothers me that New York is made out to be the bad guy. This New York doesn’t exist, at least not outside of old warning tales told by out-of-towners who have never been to the city and can only warn their loved ones (or whoever will listen) that if you go you’re sure to be mugged and/or murdered. That simply is not the case. I’m not saying New York is the safest place in the world, nor do I doubt we have as much crime as any other metropolis, but the thought that one person could run into so many situations of hostility is extremely hard to swallow.

Still, I give the film a 4 out of 5, if only for the fantastic acting and overall style alone.

MS 45 with a GLOCK. Always considered Jodie Foster to be overrated in her acting abilities and the title is weak what no one could come up with a better title.

The begining is incredibly rushed and the ending was lame. The movie lacks the courage of it's own convictions. Death Sentence was better especially since, unlike this movie, it had the guts to end the way it should have ended. The actions by Terrance Howard's character end up making him a rather so-so written character although Howard gives a terrific performance. Foster is also quite good. Ultimately, The Brave One is a good movie but it could have been better with a more developed begining and a different ending.

Loved it, after watching the trailer a couple more times I was rather hesitant to go and see it on the big screen but was very glad I did, the direction and camera work were excellent. The acting was great to, Howard was excellent and Foster was good too (I've never been very impressed with her acting though). Excellent subtle score too which really added to the action/chase scenes.

Jodie Foster was great in this, but other than that it wasn't much more than a Death Wish 6/10

SPOILERS!!

Finally saw this one. I had such high hopes for it. I like the cast and Neil Jordan is (usually) a fantastic director. As someone who despises revenge movies, I hoped for a serious examination of vengeance and the morally gray area that can surround it. Sadly that's not what I got. For starters, the brutal murder of a doctor and the savage beating of his girlfriend in Central Park would be huge news and there would be intense pressure on the police to find the perpetrators. This is 2008 NYC. Times have changed. She wouldn't have to visit a precinct weeks later to find out what's going on, only to get the brush off. Her transformation is way too quick to be even remotely believable. One brief scene of her walking around paranoid, and then she buys a gun and starts killing. Just like that. I was hoping for a slow (and credible) progression that showed her gradually deteriorate. Not to be. I didn't sympathize with her much at all, which I'm sure was not the filmmaker's intent. The ending is a massive joke. She deserved to be and should have been arrested. Suddenly someone goes completely against their character and everything they stand for. Howard and Katt are excellent, and I did enjoy some of the back and forth between Howard and Foster. But the rest is a useless mess. Even the normally superb Jordan is off his game. The constant tilting of the camera was incredibly annoying and pointless. A profound disappointment.

I knew it was going to be shit, and it was shit. It was however, less shitty than I expected. Kudos to Howard, Foster and Jordan. This was trashy, z-grade material that is transformed at times into something higher and at times, shows moments of brilliance. Yes, the diner reflection scene. However, most of the time its self righteousness is over the top and the ending is retarded.

blech. not much to love. Pretty generic Death Wish stuff, only with an outrageously laughable ending.
